A poroelastic composite material, containing different material phases and filled with fluids, serves as a model to formulate the overall ablative behaviors of such materials. This article deals with the assessment of variation in nondeterministic poroelastic properties of two-phase composite materials using micromechanical representative volume element (RVE) models. Considering the configuration and arrangement of pores in a matrix phase, various RVEs are modeled and analyzed according to their porosity. In order to quantitatively investigate the effects of microstructure, changes in effective elastic moduli and poroelastic parameters are measured via finite element (FE) analysis. The poroelastic parameters are calculated from the effective elastic moduli and the pore-pressure-induced strains. The reliability of the numerical results is verified through image-based FE models with the actual shape of pores in carbon-phenolic ablative materials. Additionally, the variation of strain energy density is measured, which can possibly be used to evaluate microstress concentrations.

This paper established the analytical model of sea surface oscilation of simple type fishing port with vertical wave absorbor. This model is composed by MAEM(Matched Asymptotic Expansion Method) for wave amplification in fishing port and EEM(Eigen - function Expansion Method) for wave absorbing characteristics against vertical perforated plates. Dimensionless porosity by adopting Darcy's law was introduced to evaluate wave absorbing characteristics of the perforated structure. Using the model, the efficiency of the vertical perforated plates was studied for fishing port tranqulity with number of plates, array method and plate intervals. Optimal design and arrangement of perforated plates can be applied to develop multipurpose fishing ports and villages.

This study compares the quartzites of four quartzite units: The Fagfog Quartzite, Dunga Quartzite (member of the Robang Formation), Pandrang Quartzite (member of the Kalitar Formation) and the Chisapani Quartzite. The analysis shows variations in flakiness and elongation, as the Fagfog Quartzite displays low flakiness whereas the Pandrang and the Chisapani have moderate and the Dunga Quartzite has shown variations. The density values of the four quartzite units remain consistent, indicating uniform physical properties and porosity levels. However, bulk density values differ among the quartzites, suggesting variations in particle arrangement, porosity, and density. Regarding strength measures, the Pandrang and the Chisapani Quartzite have higher strength characteristics as compared to the Fagfog and the Dunga Quartzites. The Pandrang Quartzite has the highest average point load strength index, classifying it as "Extremely Strong". The resistance to impact and crushing forces varies among the quartzites, with lower Aggregate Impact Value (AIV) and Aggregate Crushing Value (ACV) indicating higher strength and durability. Durability tests show that the Fagfog Quartzite has high durability against slaking, with a slight decrease observed after the fifth cycle. The Dunga Quartzite shows varying degrees of weathering, while the Pandrang and the Chisapani Quartzite have minimal weight changes, indicating strong resistance to weathering. Magnesium sulfate soundness tests indicate high durability and resistance to degradation for all four units. The Los Angeles abrasion value (LAAV) tests indicate favorable resistance to abrasion for the majority of the Fagfog, Dunga, and the Pandrang Quartzites samples, while Chisapani Quartzite shows more variability in LAAV values. The Pandrang Quartzite shows a higher proportion of elongated particles but lower flakiness index values as compared to Fagfog and Dunga Quartzites while Chisapani Quartzite stands out with a significantly higher presence of flaky particles and lower elongation index values. Mechanically, the Fagfog and Dunga Quartzite show higher strength and better resistance to abrasion and freeze and thaw. The Pandrang Quartzite shows moderate resistance to crushing and sudden effect, while the Chisapani Quartzite has variable resistance to effect. This comparative study emphasizes the diversity and complexity of quartzite rock types, showing the need for comprehensive characterization and assessment to determine their suitability for specific applications.
Objective: Animal-free scaffolds have emerged as a potential foundation for consistent, chemically defined, and low-cost materials. Because of its good potential for high biocompatibility with reproductive tissues and well-characterized scaffold design, we investigated whether polyglycolic acid (PGA) could be used as an animal-free scaffold instead of natural fibrin-agarose, which has been used successfully for three-dimensional human endometrial cell culture. Methods: Isolated primary endometrial cells was cultured on fibrin-agarose and PGA polymers and evaluated various design parameters, such as scaffold porosity and mean fiber diameter. Cytotoxicity, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), and immunostaining experiments were conducted to examine cell activity on fabricated scaffolds. Results: The MTT (3-[4,5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide) assay and SEM results showed that endometrial cells grew and proliferated on both scaffolds. Immunostaining showed cytokeratin and vimentin expression in seeded cells after 7 days of culture. On both scaffolds, an epithelial arrangement of cultured cells was found on the top layer and stromal arrangement matrix on the bottom layer of the scaffolds. Therefore, fibrin-agarose and PGA scaffolds successfully mimicked the human endometrium in a way suitable for in vitro analysis. Conclusion: Both fibrin-agarose and PGA scaffolds could be used to simulate endometrial structures. However, because of environmental and ethical concerns and the low cost of synthetic polymers, we recommend using PGA as a synthetic polymer for scaffolding in research instead of natural biomaterials.

SiC and its composites have been considered for use as nuclear fuel cladding materials of pressurized light water reactors. In this study, a $SiC_f$/SiC composite as a constituent layer of SiC triplex fuel cladding was fabricated using a chemical vapor infiltration (CVI) process in which tubular SiC fiber preforms were prepared using a filament winding method. To enhance the matrix density of the composite layer, winding patterns, deposition temperature, and gas input ratio were controlled. Fiber arrangement and porosity were the main parameters influencing densification behaviors. Final density of the composites decreased as the SiC fiber volume fraction increased. The CVI process was optimized to densify the tubular preforms with high fiber volume fraction at a high $H_2$/MTS ratio of 20 at $1000^{\circ}C$; in this process, surface canning of the composites was effectively retarded.
The composite added with surface-coated chopped carbon fiber showed the microstructure of a 3 dimensional discretional arrangements. The fiber reinforced reaction bonded silicon carbide composite, containing the 50 vol% carbon fiber, showed the porosity of < 1 vol%, 3-point bending strength value of 250MPa and fracture toughness of 4.5 $MPa{\cdot}m^{1/2}$. As the content of carbon fiber was increased from 0 vol% to 50 vol% in the composite, fracture strength was decreased due to the increase of carbon fiber, which has a less strength than SiC and molten Si. On the other hand, the fracture toughness was increased with increasing the amount of carbon fiber. According to the polished microstructure, carbon fiber was shown to have a random 3 dimensional arrangement. Moreover, the fiber pull-out phenomenon was observed with the fractured surface, which can explain the increased fracture toughness of the composite containing high content of carbon fiber.
Recent advancements in the electrospinning method enable the production of ultrafine solid and continuous fibers with diameters ranging from a few nanometers to a few hundred nanometers with controlled surface and morphological features. A wide range of biopolymers can be electrospun into mats with a specific fiber arrangement and structural integrity. These features of nanofiber mats are morphologically similar to the extracellular matrix of natural tissues, which are characterized by a wide pore diameter distribution, a high porosity, effective mechanical properties, and specific biochemical properties. This has resulted in various kinds of applications for polymer nanofibers in the field of biomedicine and biotechnology. The current emphasis of research is on exploiting these properties and focusing on determining the appropriate conditions for electrospinning various biopolymers for biomedical applications, including scaffolds used in tissue engineering, wound dressing, drug delivery, artificial organs, and vascular grafts, and for protective shields in specialty fabrics. This paper reviews the research on biomedical applications of electrospun nanofibers.

In this study, flow analysis of single, double, and triple filter systems of cylindrical structures was performed to analyze the flow characteristics of each filter. As a result of the flow analysis of the filter system, the number of filters and the pressure drop rate tend to be proportional to each other. It was found that the area passing through the inside of the filter had almost the same pressure. The maximum pressure drop rate of the triple filter system was about 14.9% for the forward-flow and about 12.4% for the reverse-flow. It was determined that the performance of the filter was stable within 20% of the allowable pressure drop rate of the filter system, which is the standard presented to the Korea Water Technology Certification Institute(KWTCI). In the future, a study on the decompression characteristics of the filter system according to the effect of the arrangement interval and filter density of the triple filter will be conducted.

Covalent organic frameworks (COFs) are porous crystalline polymers in which organic units are linked by covalent bonds and have a regular arrangement at the atomic level. Recently, the COFs have been much attention in bio-medical area such as bio-imaging, drug delivery, and therapeutics. These 2D nanoparticles are proving their value in nanomedicine due to their large surface area, functionalization through functional groups exposed on the surface, chemical stability due to covalent bonding, and high biocompatibility. The high ω-electron density and crystallinity of COFs makes it a promising candidate for bioimaging probes, and its porosity and large surface area make it possible to be utilized as a drug delivery vehicle. However, the low dispersibility in water, the cytotoxicity problems of COFs are still challenged to be solved in the future. In this regard, several efforts that increase the degree of dispersion through functionalization on the surface of COFs for the application to the biomedical field have been reported. In this review, we would like to describe the advantages and limitations of COFs for bio-imaging and anti-cancer treatment.

In this study, a numerical analysis on the discharging performance of a thermal storage tank completely filled with packing modules is investigated. The enthalpy-porosity method is adopted to analyze phase change phenomenon. Using this method, the melting process of a packing module in the thermal storage tank was studied as the HTF (heat transfer fluid) flows down from the top of the tank at the discharging mode. There are some design factors such as the module arrangement and the number of modules, but this study focuses on the effects of varying the flow rate of the HTF on the outlet temperature of the HTF, molten fraction, and thermal storage density. As the flow rate increases, the outlet temperature of the HTF gets higher and the total melting time of the PCM decreases. Additionally, the thermal storage density is increased so that it reaches about 93% for the desired value.
