PURPOSES : This study is to compare load transfer efficiency of key joint and dowel joint for airport concrete pavement. METHODS : As AC150/5320-6D of FAA's [Advisory Circular] was changed into AC150/5320-6E, Key joint type of rigid pavement were excluded from Construction Joints. LTE(Load Transfer Efficiency) of dowel joint and key joint were compared by times and seasons through pavement temperature measurement, ocular investigation and HWD measurement. RESULTS : For the joint performance grade of No. 2(The second) runway of airport, 12% of poor rate was observed in key joint and 2% of poor rate in dowel joint. Poor rate of key joint was increased to 17%, if only No. 3~No. 6 slabs, which are mostly loaded from the airplanes, were applied for the study. In apron area, LTE poor rate of key joint was high in winter, and LTE poor rate of dowel joint was at least above 'Fair' grade. In summer, 'Fair' for key joint, 'Acceptable' for dowel joint appeared. CONCLUSIONS : As results, dowel joint was superior than key joint for LTE. Deviations of seasons and times were smaller in dowel joint's result. And LTE in winter was lower than LTE in summer.
The existing raised pavement marker, however, have some limitations. Most of them are square-shaped which makes only forward and backward retro-reflection, their orientation can be easily changed by impact of vehicle, and the surface reflector can be readily contaminated leading poor functioning. In addition, maintenance for broken raised pavement marker is not easy. The purpose of the study is to design and manufacture a new and improved type of raised pavement marker. The new raised pavement marker has round-shaped upper structure. Its body was separated from the holder and the reflector was surrounded by acrylic cover. We tested performances of the constituent parts, optimum load after installation, and reflection efficiency. The new raised pavement marker will be an initiation of studies on the improvement of the shape and performance of raised pavement markers.
PURPOSES : This study aims at proposing the methodology for benefit evaluations in pavement maintenance methods and timings using KoPMS(Korean Pavement Management System) software which was developed for efficient pavement management. METHODS : This study classified pavement sections into 4 clusters considering AADT(Annual Average Daily Traffic) and ESAL(Equivalent Single-Axle Load) using cluster analysis and used the deterioration models in each cluster. Increased user costs due to pavement deterioration as time goes by and agent costs for maintenance were estimated. Based on deterioration model and KoPMS software, Methodology for benefit evaluation was proposed in pavement maintenance methods and with/without implementation using real pavement section data. RESULTS : This study verified that considering agent costs only would be constrained to decide pavement maintenance methods and timings, and ascertained that decision making with agent and user costs would be effective. In addition, this study revealed that pavement maintenance methods and timings can be affected by AADT and ESAL and frequent pavement maintenances can be more efficient for benefits in pavement sections with more AADT and ESAL. Also this study found that user costs would be more affected to decision making than agent costs. Moreover, Delay of conducting pavement maintenance caused increased vehicle operating costs and environmental costs because of poor conditions of pavements. CONCLUSIONS : This study proposed LCCA and benefit estimation methodology of pavement with considering agent and user costs. The results of this study can be used for baseline data of efficient pavement asset management.
In this study this writer carried out survey and analysis on paving materials of children's playground for 40 apartment buildings with each of such apartment containing 100 households or more and which were built within last 15 years in Jeonju. As a result of analysis of such questionnaires this author could draw following conclusion. In the second half of 1990s pavement materials which were used mainly were sand and during first half of 2000s they were mixture of sand and rubber block and around 2010 they were rubber block or rubber chip pavements. Such change seemed to be a result of consideration of convenience for management and safety rather than in deference to diversity of children's outing places. Survey on the current status of pavement materials revealed need for directives by the main entity for management and their firm resolve for its implementation. And there was need for their coping with problems such as pressure of treading or lack of it or poor condition of drainage in case of sand and phenomena of pitting or dipping down, discoloring and poor drainage in case of rubber chips and rubber blocks and loosening of gaps between rubber blocks etc. Result of analysing status of usage disclosed that 50.4% of the respondents to questionnaires stated that they had experience of accidents. With regard to cause of such accident it was found that 47.5% of accidents were attributable to play facilities and 19.5% were due to paving (floor) materials thus it was disclosed that not only play facilities but also pavement materials had impact on safety for the children. Result of analysing level of satisfaction with pavement materials showed that pavement by rubber chips and blocks had higher level of satisfaction which was reflection of fear on cleanness of sand. In terms of preference rubber chip and rubber block pavements were highest and the next one was sand. Reason for such preference was based on concern with safety.
This study evaluated characteristics and performance of recycled concrete as a pavement which was constructed on a low volume road. The recycled concrete was prepared by replacing a half of coarse aggregate with recycled aggregate. Natural sand from a source was used as fine aggregate together with admixtures such as plasticizer and fly ash (0.8% and 5% by wt. of cement, respectively). The length, thickness and width of the pavement were 100mm, 20cm and 3m, respectively. From construction experience, it was found that workability and finishability of the recycled concrete mixture were relatively poor, but strengths were satisfactory. Flexural strength, compressive strength and elastic modulus at 28 days were approximately 45Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, 250Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, and 240,000 Kg/$\textrm{cm}^2$, respectively. The pavement could be constructed by hand without much difficulty. The surface was finished smoothy by wet fabric and only minor cracks were found on the surface.
PURPOSES : So far, aged cement concrete pavement on express highways has been rehabilitated mainly with asphalt concrete inlay. However, potholes were the major problem, and they shortened the life of the inlay mainly owing to the poor drainage of water once it infiltrated the interface of the concrete and asphalt. The purpose of this study is to compare the performance and economic efficiency of asphalt overlay and inlay. METHODS : Overlay and inlay were compared through accelerated pavement testing, and a life-cycle cost analysis was conducted in this study using the CA4PRS program. RESULTS and CONCLUSIONS : It was found from accelerated pavement testing that the overlay exhibited reflective crack resistance that was more than twice as effective as that of inlay. The total cost (construction cost + user cost) within the analysis period (20 years) of the overlay was 37% lower than that of the inlay.
Many distress mechanisms in pavement are known to be caused by the poor mechanical properties of bituminous concretes. Among many mechanical properties, tensile strength is one of the more important indicates that represent the resistance of pavement to traffic loading. However, there has been no relationship established between the strength and distress mechanisms. Therefore, this study was conducted to evaluate a correlation between the tensile strength value and the intensity of distress in bituminous concrete. Distress data were collected from an extensive field investigation over 77km of a four-lane highway in South Carolina, USA, and from laboratory prepared specimens in two phases of study. Strength data were obtained from a total of more than 400 field cores taken from the same highway and from 640marshall specimens of surface course mixture prepared in the laboratory. These data were analyzed using statistical test techniques. It was found from statistical analyses that the tensile strength of bituminous concrete had a strong relation with the pavement condition in the field. In the analysis of rutting and stripping, low strength concrete showed a higher distress rate in the mixture, and mixtures under distress in the field showed obviously reduced strength values. Stripping was found to be the most significant distress mechanism that was correlated with low strength bituminous concrete. Rutting appeared more frequently in a low strength pavement section of the highway as a sign of failure due to traffic loading.
PURPOSES : Concrete pavement has been used in the construction of the Jungbu expressway in 1987. More than 60% of the pavement on the expressway is currently made of concrete, but most has been used far beyond their design life. Pavement life has been extended through routine maintenance or overlay. However, the structural capacity of the pavement has reached its limit, and extensive rehabilitation/reconstruction with long time traffic blocking should be considered. The three following issues on concrete rehabilitation/reconstruction will be discussed: (1) economic comparison of asphalt inlay and asphalt overlay, (2) economic comparison preventive overlay on a section which is currently good and routine overlay on the section which will be poor, and (3) economic analysis of early-strength concrete when it is used in concrete reconstruction. METHODS : First, various life cycle cost analysis tools were compared, and the proper tool for the extensive rehabilitation/reconstruction was selected. Second, a sensitivity analysis of the selected tool was performed to find the influential input variables, which should be carefully selected in the analysis. Third, three case studies, which can be issues in the rehabilitation/reconstruction of the expressway concrete pavement in Korea, were performed. RESULTS : Asphalt overlay without milling the deteriorated concrete showed 18~25% lower life cycle cost than the current asphalt inlay with milling. The good current preventive overlay on the section was economically justified within the scope of this study. The construction cost limit of the early strength concrete was suggested to be economical for 1, 3, and 7 days of construction alternative opening. CONCLUSIONS : CA4PRS was a viable tool for comparing various rehabilitation/reconstruction issue alternatives. Several concrete issues associated with the rehabilitation/reconstruction of the deteriorated concrete pavement were discussed as mentioned above.
This paper presents the results of field experience from an experimental pavement construction on a low volume road using recycled concrete. The recycled concrete was prepared by replacing a half of coarse aggregate with recycled aggregate. Virgin natural sand was used as fine aggregate together a plasticizer and a fly ash (0.8% and 5% by wt. of cement, respectively). The load bearing capacity of the subbase made of recycled aggregate was acceptable. The length, thickness and width of the pavement were l00m, 20cm and 3m, respectively. From construction experience, it was found that workability and finishability of the recycled concrete mixture were relatively poor, but strengths were satisfactory. Flexural strength, compressive strength and elastic modulus at 28 days were 54Kg/$cm^2$, over 250Kg/$cm^2$, and 220,OOOKg/$cm^2$, respectively. The construction could be performed by hand without much difficulty. The surface was finished smoothly by wet fabric and only minor cracks were found on the surface.
