Metallic elements in dustfall have been known as notable air pollutants directly or indirectly influencing human health and wealth. The first aim of this study was to obtain precise spatial distribution patterns of 5 elements (Pb, Zn, K, Cr, and Al) in dustfall around Suwon area. To predict isometric lines of metal fluxes deposited on unsupervised random sites, the study has applied both spatial statistics as a receptor model and a GIS (geographic information system). Total of 31 sampling sites were selected in the study area (roughly 3 by 3 km grid basis) and dustfall samples were then collected monthly basis by the British deposit gauges from Dec., 1995 to Nov., 1996. The metallic elements in the dustfall were then analyzed by an atomic absorption spectrometer (AAS). On the other hand, a base map overlapped by 7 layers was constructed by using the AutoCAD R13 and ARC/INFO 3.4D. Four different spatial interpolation and expolation techniques such as IDW (inverse distance weighted averaging), TIN (triangulated irregular network), polynomial regression, and kriging technique were examined to compare spatial distribution patterns. Each pattern obtained by each technique was substantally different as varing pollutant types, land of use types, and topological conditions, etc. Thus, our study focused intensively on uncertainty analysis based on a concept of the jackknife and the sum of error distance. It was found that a kriging technique was the best applicalbe in this study area.
In order to protect a structure over its full life cycle, a novel tuned mass damper (TMD), the so-called semi-active eddy current pendulum tuned mass damper (SAEC-PTMD), which can retune its frequency and damping ratio in real-time, is proposed in this study. The structural instantaneous frequency is identified through a Hilbert-Huang transformation (HHT), and the SAEC-PTMD pendulum is adjusted through an HHT-based control algorithm. The eddy current damping parameters are discussed, and the relationship between effective damping coefficients and air gaps is fitted through a polynomial function. The semi-active eddy current damping can be adjusted in real-time by adjusting the air gap based on the linear-quadratic-Gaussian (LQG)-based control algorithm. To verify the vibration control effect of the SAEC-PTMD, an idealized linear primary structure equipped with an SAEC-PTMD excited by harmonic excitations and near-fault pulse-like earthquake excitations is proposed as one of the two case studies. Under strong earthquakes, structures may go into the nonlinear state, while the Bouc-Wen model has a wild application in simulating the hysteretic characteristic. Therefore, in the other case study, a nonlinear primary structure based on the Bouc-Wen model is proposed. An optimal passive TMD is used for comparison and the detuning effect, which results from the cumulative damage to primary structures, is considered. The maximum and root-mean-square (RMS) values of structural acceleration and displacement time history response, structural acceleration, and displacement response spectra are used as evaluation indices. Power analyses for one earthquake excitation are presented as an example to further study the energy dissipation effect of an SAECPTMD. The results indicate that an SAEC-PTMD performs better than an optimized passive TMD, both before and after damage occurs to the primary structure.
The aim of this study is to investigate the inelastic buckling behavior of the beams under moment gradient using a line-type finite element method. The method is incorporated the non-uniform yielding of the cross-section caused by the presence of residual stress and accepted model of residual stress so called 'simplified' and 'polynomial' pattern is adopted in this study. The inelastic lateral-torsional buckling results obtained in this study is compared with the buckling results obtained from the design method based on the allowable stress method given in Korean Steel Designers Manual (KSDM 1995). This study have found that the design method in KSDM (1995) is conservative without and with intermediate bracing applied at the mid span of the beam, and there is some scope for improving the provisions of KSDM (1995)

A sliding mode fuzzy control (SMFC) algorithm is presented for vibration of large structures. Rule-base of the fuzzy inference engine is constructed based on the sliding mode control, which is one of the nonlinear control algorithms. Fuzziness of the controller makes the control system robust against the uncertainties in the system parameters and the input excitation. Non-linearity of the control rule makes the controller more effective than linear controllers. Design procedure based on the present fuzzy control is more convenient than those of the conventional algorithms based on complex mathematical analysis, such as linear quadratic regulator and sliding mode control(SMC). Robustness of presented controller is illustrated by examining the loop transfer function. For verification of the present algorithm, a numerical study is carried out on the benchmark problem initiated by the ASCE Committee on Structural Control. To achieve a high level of realism, various aspects are considered such as actuator-structure interaction, modeling error, sensor noise, actuator time delay, precision of the A/D and D/A converters, magnitude of control force, and order of control model. Performance of the SMFC is examined in comparison with those of other control algorithms such as $H_{mixed 2/{\infty}}$ optimal polynomial control, neural networks control, and SMC, which were reported by other researchers. The results indicate that the present SMFC is an efficient and attractive control method, since the vibration responses of the structure can be reduced very effectively and the design procedure is simple and convenient.
There are two types of Physical Model and RFM (Rational Function Model) is to determinate ground coordinates using KOMPSAT-2 and KOMPSAT-3 satellite data. Generally, RPCs(Rational Polynomial Coefficients) based on RFM is provided for users. This RPCs is to compute the ground coordinates to the image coordinates. If users produce ortho-image with provided RPCs is useful, directly compute the ground coordinates corresponding to image coordinates and check location accuracy etc. are difficult. In this study, a basic algorithm of inverse RPCs that calculates the image coordinates to ground coordinates, compute based on provided RPCs and evaluation of determinated ground coordinates using developed inverse RPCs were proposed.

A systematic procedure of probability analysis for general distributions is developed based on the first four moments estimated from polynomial interpolation of the system response function and the Pearson system. The function approximation is based on a specially selected experimental region for accuracy and the number of function evaluations is taken equal to that of the unknown coefficient for efficiency. For this purpose, three error-minimizing conditions are proposed and corresponding canonical experimental regions are formed for popular probability. This approach is applied to study the stochastic properties of the performance functions of a MEMS structure, which has quite large fabrication errors compared to other structures. Especially, the vibratory micro-gyroscope is studied using the statistical moments and probability density function (PDF) of the performance function to be the difference between resonant frequencies corresponding to sensing and driving mode. The results show that it is very sensitive to the fabrication errors and that the types of PDF of each variable also affect the stochastic properties of the performance function although they have same the mean and variance.

The paper concerns Fuzzy C-Means clustering based Radial Basis Function neural networks (FCM-RBFNN) and the optimization of the network is carried out by means of Particle Swarm Optimization(PSO). FCM-RBFNN is the extended architecture of Radial Basis Function Neural Network(RBFNN). In the proposed network, the membership functions of the premise part of fuzzy rules do not assume any explicit functional forms such as Gaussian, ellipsoidal, triangular, etc., so its resulting fitness values directly rely on the computation of the relevant distance between data points by means of FCM. Also, as the consequent part of fuzzy rules extracted by the FCM - RBFNN model, the order of four types of polynomials can be considered such as constant, linear, quadratic and modified quadratic. Weighted Least Square Estimator(WLSE) are used to estimates the coefficients of polynomial. Since the performance of FCM-RBFNN is affected by some parameters of FCM-RBFNN such as a specific subset of input variables, fuzzification coefficient of FCM, the number of rules and the order of polynomials of consequent part of fuzzy rule, we need the structural as well as parametric optimization of the network. In this study, the PSO is exploited to carry out the structural as well as parametric optimization of FCM-RBFNN. Moreover The proposed model is demonstrated with the use of numerical example and gas furnace data set.

In this study, we developed RBFN(Radial Basis Function Networks) based load modeling method with harmonic components. The developed method considers harmonic information as well as fundamental frequency and voltage considered as essential factors in conventional method. Thus, the reposed method makes it possible to effectively estimate load characteristics in power lines with harmonics. RBFN has some advantage such as simple structure and rapid computation ability compared with multi-layer perceptorn which is extensively applied for load modeling. To verify the effectiveness, the proposed method has been intensively tested with various dataset acquired under the different frequency and voltage and compared it with conventional methods such as polynomial method, MLPN and RBFN with no harmonic components.

Initiation of crack and its growth simulation requires accurate model of traction - separation law. Accurate modeling of traction-separation law remains always a great challenge. Atomistic simulations based prediction has great potential in arriving at accurate traction-separation law. The present paper is aimed at establishing a method to address the above problem. A method for traction-separation law prediction via utilizing atomistic simulations data has been proposed. In this direction, firstly, a simpler approach of common neighbor analysis (CNA) for the prediction of crack growth has been proposed and results have been compared with previously used approach of threshold potential energy. Next, a scheme for prediction of crack speed has been demonstrated based on the stable crack growth criteria. Also, an algorithm has been proposed that utilizes a variable relaxation time period for the computation of crack growth, accurate stress behavior, and traction-separation atomistic law. An understanding has been established for the generation of smoother traction-separation law (including the effect of free surface) from a huge amount of raw atomistic data. A new curve fit has also been proposed for predicting traction-separation data generated from the molecular dynamics simulations. The proposed traction-separation law has also been compared with the polynomial and exponential model used earlier for the prediction of traction-separation law for the bulk materials.

In this paper, we address some issues in existing seismic hazard closed-form equations and present a novel seismic hazard equation form to overcome these issues. The presented equation form is based on higher-order polynomials, which can well describe the seismic hazard information with relatively high non-linearity. The accuracy of the proposed form is illustrated not only in the seismic hazard data itself but also in estimating the annual probability of failure (APF) of the structural systems. For this purpose, the information on seismic hazard is used in representative areas of the United States (West : Los Angeles, Central : Memphis and Kansas, East : Charleston). Examples regarding the APF estimation are the analyses of existing platform structure and nuclear power plant problems. As a result of the numerical example analyses, it is confirmed that the higher-order-polynomial-based hazard form presented in this paper could predict the APF values of the two example structure systems as well as the given seismic hazard data relatively accurately compared with the existing closed-form hazard equations. Therefore, in the future, it is expected that we can derive a new improved APF function by combining the proposed hazard formula with the existing fragility equation.
