Generally, polymer mortar made with unsaturated polyester(UP) resin has a high curing shrinkage. This is an inadequate as repair material and construction products that have been widely used for years recently. To overcome these problems, polymer researchers and engineers have used shrinkage-reducing additives, which are usually specific thermoplastic polymers. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effects of shrinkage-reducing additive on the curing shrinkage and strengths of UP mortar. UP mortars are prepared with expanded polystyrene(EPS) ratio in styrene monomer(SM), (EPS/PS, PS=EPS+SM), and the ratio of total polystyrene resin(PS) to UP resin, (PS/UP). And it is tested for viscosity of UP resin, slump-flow, working life, flexural and compressive strengths, and curing shrinkage tests. From the test results, viscosity of resin for UP mortar increases with increasing PS content. Curing shrinkage of UP mortar is considerably smaller than that of plain UP mortar, nevertheless, reduction in the strengths is not recognized according to adding PS resin. In this study, we can obtain the optimum mix proportions of UP mortar using PS resin which made of waste expanded polystyrene.
This paper describes the experimental results of insulated concrete sandwich wall panels (CSWP) with corrugated glass fiber-reinforced polymer (GFRP) shear connectors under in-plane shear loading. Corrugated GFRP shear connectors were used to improve the thermal property of insulated CSWP and to achieve composite action between the interior and exterior concrete wall panels. Test specimens were consist of three concrete panels with two insulation layers between concrete panels and middle concrete panels was loaded in the direction of gravity. To evaluate the effects of insulation types (extruded polystyrene, XPSS and expanded polystyrene, EPS), shear connector pitch (300 and 400 mm) and width (10 and 15 mm) on in-plane shear behavior of insulted CSWP, failure mode and shear flow-average relative slip relationship of specimens were investigated. Test results indicate that the bond stress between concrete panel and insulation is considerable initially. Especially in case of insulated CSWP without shear connector, initial stiffness of CSWP with XPSS is superior to that of CSWP with EPS. The shear connector's contribution to in-plane shear performance of insulated CSWP depends on the type of insulation.
Various researches on the application of polymer dispersions to the cement mortar and concrete have been practised in many countries like America, Japan and Germany and so on because of high performance and good modification effect of these. In this study, SBR, Polymer dispersion that widely used in situ is employed that the self-flowability may be induced in the cemen mortar. In order to comprehend and investigate the modification of cement mortar with self-flowability by SBR and properties and fracture mode of adhesive strength in tension of that, experimental parameter was set as SBR solid-Cement ratio(S/C) and Cement:Fine aggregate(C:F) and the experiments such as Unit weight, Flow, Consistency change, Crack resistance and Segregation that inform on the general properties have been done. In addition of that, Adhesion in tension is measured with a view to comprehending the properties and fracture mode in tensile load. Consistency change of cement mortar modified by SBR did grow better as the ratio of SBR solid-Cement increased and was much superior to that of resin based flooring such as polyurethane and epoxy which recorded the loss of consistency in 90min. after mixing. Adhesive strength in tension increased with continuity in the curing age and showed the maximum in case of C:F=1:1 and S/C=20%. As the increase of curing age, the fracture mainly happened in the concrete substrate and the interface between the specimen and concrete substrate.
Large residual stresses are remained in the conventional injection molded products because of the high cavity pressure in packing phase during injection molding process. Conventional injection molding (CIM) invokes distribution of cavity pressure and it has a limitation to obtain product with uniform physical property. Multi-cavity conventional injection molding contains quality deviation among the cavities since flow imbalance occurs during filling phase. Injection compression molding (ICM) is adopted to overcome these limitations of CIM. In this study, molding characteristics of CIM and ICM have been investigated using multi-cavity injection mold. Researches were performed by both experiment and computer simulation through observations of birefringence for transparent resins, polycarbonate and polystyrene in CIM and ICM. As a result, low and uniform birefringence and mold shrinkage were showed in the specimens by ICM that could give a uniform cavity pressure. Deviation of physical property among the specimens in multi-cavity mold shown in CIM was significantly reduced in the specimens by ICM. Through this study it was concluded that the ICM in multi-cavity molding was valid for molding products with uniform property in an individual cavity and also reduced property deviation among the cavities.
A characteristic study of chlorine dioxide generation by the electrolysis system was performed after chlorite ($ClO_2^-$) is adsorbed from sodium chlorite by a polymer ion exchange resin. A strongly basic anion exchange resin was used and a Ti plate coated with Ru and Ir was used as an electrode. Various parameters such as reaction stirring velocity, reaction temperature, chlorine dioxide product concentration, ion exchange resin content and product maker type for the adsorption quantity in the chlorite adsorption of ion exchange resin were investigated and found the ion exchange resin with the maximum adsorption quantity. A generation trend of chlorine dioxide was observed by the electrolysis system and optimum conditions on the desired value were found using response surface design of DOE (Design of Experiments). The strongly basic anion exchange resin with the maximum adsorption quantity was SAR-20 (TRILITE Gel type II) and the adsorption quantity was around 110 mg/IER (g). Observed generation optimum conditions of chlorine dioxide were constant-current (electrode area base; $A/dm^2$) and flow rate of $N_2$ gas (4.7 L/min) at the desired value of sterilization (900~1000 ppm, 1 h).

This study investigated the effect of surface water on concrete substrate on adhesive strength in tension of very high flowable SBR-modified cement mortar. The specimens were prepared with proportionally mixing SBR latex, ordinary portland cement, silica sand, superplasticizer and viscosity enhancing agent. Polymer cement ratio (P/C) were 10, 20, 30, 50 and 75% and the weight ratio of fine aggregate to cement were 1:1 and 1:3. The specimens obtained with different P/C and C:F were characterized by unit weight, flow test, crack resistance and adhesion test. After basic tests, two mixtures of P/C=20% and 30% in case of C:F=1:1, and one mixture of P/C=50% in case of C:F=1:3 were selected, respectively. These three selected specimens were studied about the effect of surface water evenly sprayed on concrete substrate by a amount of 0, 0.006, 0.012, 0.017, 0.024g per unit area ($cm^2$) of concrete substrate surface The results show that surface water on concrete substrate increases the adhesive strength in tension of high flowable SBR-modified cement mortar and improve the flowability compared to the non-sprayed case.
The recycled polyethylene composites with various ratio of ground waste tire powder were manufactured by using a fully intermeshing co-rotating twin screw extruder for the reuse of waste tire scrap. In this investigation, the ground waste tire powders (GWTP) were blended with virgin HDPE and recycled polyethylene in the weight ratio of 0 to 50 wt.%. Mechanical properties such as tensile strength, elongation at break and impact strength were measured by using ASTM standard. The experimental results for the various composite showed that the tensile strength of composites decreased with increasing GWTP ratio, while elongation at break increased with the amounts of GWTP. On the other hand, the impact strength for the three kinds of composites showed maximum at the 30 wt.% of GWTP and then decreased. Morphology of the fracture surface tends to be rough with increasing waste tire powder content. Rheological properties were investigated by measuring the shear viscosity against shear rates and softening temperatures. They showed that melt viscosity of rubber composites in this study subsequently increased with increasing GWTP content as a result of increase of flow resistance against external stress and followed a Power-law behavior.
We measured shear viscosity of polystyrene (PS) and poly(butyl methacrylate) (PBMA) particles, with a capillary rheometer, prepared by suspension polymerization with 1.0 wt% hydrophobic silica as a stabilizer by varying the initiator concentration at $75^{\circ}C$. PS particles with weight average molecular weight of 66,500 g/mol displayed a Newtonian behaior at low shear rates at $190^{\circ}C$. With increasing molecular weight, PS particles showed shear thinning over the entire range of shear rates. For PBMA particles, steady shear measurement was carried out at $170^{\circ}C$. PBMA particles with weight average molecular weight of 156,700 g/mol showed a Newtonian behaior only at low shear rates. PBMA particles also showed shear thinning with an increase in molecular weight and its pattern similar to that of PS. When carbon black was incorporated into PS and PBMA polymers, steady shear measurement was conducted at $170^{\circ}C$. An increase in carbon black concentration in PS and PBMA composite particles exhibited a progressive increase in shear viscosity. The increase in shear viscosity, however, was less pronounced compared to an increase as a function of molecular weight. Preparing PS composites containing carbon black by internal mixing resulted in an increase in shear viscosity. Its increase, however, was found to be less than that shown in PS composite particles. We speculate that this is caused by an enhanced dispersion of carbon black particles with an internal mixer. Yield behavior was not observed in any of the samples we selected in this experiment.
This study presents the preparation of double emulsions in a poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS)-based microfluidic device. To improve the wettability of hydrophilic continuous phase onto a hydrophobic PDMS microchannel, the surface was modified with 3-(trimethoxysilyl) propyl methacrylate (TPM) and then sequentially reacted with acrylic acid monomer solution, which produced selective covalent bonding between acrylic acids and methacrylate groups. For the proof of selective surface modification, tolonium chloride solution was used to identify the modified region and we confirmed that the approach was successfully performed. When water containing 0.5% w/w sodium dodecyl sulfate and 1% w/w Span80 with hexadecane were loaded into the selectively modified microfluidic channels, we can produce stable double emulsion. Based on the spreading coefficients, we predict the morphology of double emulsions. Our proposed method efficiently produces monodisperse double emulsions having 48.5 ${\mu}m$(CV:1.6%) core and 65.1 ${\mu}m$ (CV:1.6%) shell. Furthermore, the multiple emulsions having different numbers of core were easily prepared by simple control of flow rates.
The morphology and mechanical properties of epoxy/polyamide/MPD/2E4MZ-CN reactive blends with various amount of catalyst were investigated. The cure behaviors, mechanical strengths, and morphological changes of the epoxy blend systems were analyzed by using DSC, UTM, and SEM, respectively. The amount of catalyst ranged from 0 to 3 phr, and the cure reaction occurred at $170^{\circ}C$ for 30 min. The maximum peaks in heat flow during cure reactions appeared at slightly lower temperature with increasing catalyst content, indicating that the cure reactions start at lower temperature by adding catalyst and polyamide rarely hinders the cure reaction paths. The co-continuous morphology was found in epoxy/polyamide(20 phr) blends and by adding catalyst to the blends much clearer and uniform co-continuous phase was observed. The surface tension of the mechanical test specimen was increased due to the AP plasma surface treatment, and then adhesion strength was increased by over 20% by adding 2 phr of catalyst to the blends. When considering morphological tuning of the blends by means of catalyst incorporation, it is expected that the increased elongation and adhesion strength can be achieved in the structural adhesive systems.
