고분자 전해질 연료전지 성능에 미치는 MEA 가압제조 공정 조건의 영향 (Performance of Fuel Cell with PEMFC Fabricated under Different Pressure)

  • It has fabricated membrane electrode assemblies (MEA) for proton exchange membrane fuel cell by hot-pressing method. The hot-pressing was used for the fabrication of MEA which is composed of commercial platinum electrode on carbon paper. The performance of MEA was studied with different fabrication conditions of temperature, pressure and torque. As the temperature increased, the performance of MEA was increased. and started to decrease l after arrived at the maximum performance of MEA. This is related with good contact between electrode and polymer electrolyte membrane at high temperature and microstructural change at much higher temperature. Similarly, as the pressure increased, the performance of the MEA increased up to highest values and start to decrease. According to the our results, the maximal performance of the MEA was at the temperature of $140^{\circ}C$ and the pressure of $1.5{\times}10^3$ kPa. The optimal torque to assemble the single stack was 3.2 N m.

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells(PEMFC) are very interesting power source due to high power density, simple construction and operation at low temperature. But they have problems such as high cost, improvement of performance and effect of temperature. This problems can be approached using mathematical models which are useful tools for analysis and optimization of fuel cell performance and for heat and water management, in this paper, transient model consists of various energy terms associated with fuel cell operation using the mass and energy balance equation. And water transfer in the membrane is composed of back diffusion and electro-osmotic drag. The temperature calculated by transient model approximately agreed with the temperature measured by experiment in constant current condition.

  • In automotive applicatons or water vehicles, the polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell(PEMFC) stack is keep moving while their operation. Especially the inclination environment can take a effect to fuel cell stack perfromance, because this condition can cause a bad effect to water exhaust of fuel cell stack. In this study, a large scale stack(over 100kW power) is inclined upto 30 degree in lengthwise and crosswise using stack lift equipment. And the stack is operated in 10~100% load. No significant change has appeared in crosswise inclined condition and lenthwise low angle. But in lenthwise large angle tilting condition, the fuel cell performance has significantly decreased. And this performance decrease is aggravated in low load. An active water exhaust device is applied to the stack to prevent the performance decrease. And in lenthwise large angle tilting condition, this device cause a good effect to fuel cell stack performance.

  • Highly conductive bipolar plate for polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) was prepared using phenol novolac-type epoxy/graphite powder (GP)/carbon fiber filament (CFF) composite, and a rubber-modified epoxy resin was introduced in order to give elasticity to the bipolar plate graphite fiber (GF) was incorporated in order to improve electrical conductivity. To find out the cure condition of the mixture of novolac-type and rubber-modified epoxies, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) was carried out and their data were introduced to Kissinger equation. And tensile and flexural tests were carried out using universal testing machine (UTM) and the surface morphology of the fractured specimen and the interfacial bonding between epoxy matrix and CFF or GF were observed by a scanning electron microscopy (SEM).

공정 효율 향상을 위한 연료전지전극 개발 (Manufacturing Process Improvement of Electrode for PEMFC)

  • For commercialization of fuel cell electric vehicles, one of the key objectives is to reduce cost of full stack assembly. Regarding Membrane Electrode Assembly, the major issue is to improve fuel cell activation process in the initial Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction and Oxygen Reduction Reaction. In this research, the VD (Vacuum Drying) process has been developed for improvement of activation process. The VD condition is developed by controlling the temperature and degree of vacuum to remove the remaining solvent of electrode. Consequently, the electrode applied to VD process showed the low characteristics such as 3.5% of remaining solvent content and the improved efficiency such as 15% of activation process speed.

  • 전기방사 방법으로 sulfonated poly(ether ether ketone) (SPEEK) 나노섬유를 제조하고, 압축성형법으로 고분자 전해질막 연료전지(polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cell, PEMFC)용 나노섬유막을 제조하였다. SPEEK의 최대 설폰화율은 95% 이었고 초기 열분해 온도는 약 $280^{\circ}C$로 PEEK 보다 낮았으며 접촉각은 설폰화도가 증가함에 따라 감소하였다. 전기방사 나노섬유의 최적 인가전압, 유속, 방사거리(tip to collector distance, TCD) 및 농도는 각각 22 kV, 0.3 mL/hr, 5 cm, 23 wt% 이었고 평균 섬유직경은 47.6 nm 이었다. 한편, SPEEK 이온교환 나노섬유막의 함수율 및 이온교환용량은 설폰화 시간과 설폰화제 함량이 증가함에 따라 증가하였으며 최적값은 각각 20%, 2.03 meq/g으로 Nafion 117 보다 우수하였다. 막의 전기저항은 설폰화 시간이 증가함에 따라 감소하였고 그 값은 0.58~0.06 ${\Omega}{\cdot}cm^2$로 측정되었다. 또한 막의 수소이온전도도는 설폰화 시간이 증가함에 따라 증가하였으며 최대 0.099 S/cm로 Nafion 117 보다 우수하였다.

기체확산층 압축률과 상대습도가 고분자전해질 연료전지 성능에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Gas Diffusion Layer Compression and Inlet Relative Humidity on PEMFC Performance)

  • 고분자전해질 연료전지 성능에서 기체확산층 압축률은 계면 접촉 저항과 전극으로의 반응물 전달 및 전극 내 수분 포화도에 영향을 주는 중요한 변수이다. 본 연구에서는 국내 상용 제품인 JNT20-A3를 이용하여 기체확산층 압축률에 대한 연료전지의 성능 평가를 수행하였다. 전극면적 25 ㎠ 단위 전지를 이용하여 상대습도 조건과 압축률에 대한 전기화학 임피던스 분광법과 분극 곡선을 측정하였다. 기체확산층을 18.6%에서 38.1%으로 압축시켰을 때 상대습도 100, 25% 조건에서 ohmic 저항이 각각 8, 30 mΩ·㎠이 감소하여 기체확산층 압축률이 증가할수록 접촉 저항이 감소하는 것과 동시에 막의 수화도가 증가하는 것을 확인하였다. 상대습도 조건에 대한 ohmic 저항의 변화 경향을 통하여, 압축률을 증가시켰을 때 기체확산층의 기공이 감소하여 공기극에서의 물 역확산과 전해질 막의 수화도가 증가하는 것을 확인하였다.

  • Metallic bipolar plate is the one of the promising candidate material for PEMFC because of mechanical strength, low gas permeability, electrical and thermal conductivity. However, the corrosion is the main obstacle of metallic bipolar plate, and many investigations, especially coating on base metal, have been carried out to avoid corrosion. Gold is considered as the one of the best coating material because of its corrosion resistance and electrical conductivity. In this study, gold coated metallic bipolar plate was developed and evaluated. Due to our coating process, gold can be well-adhere to the base material, and hydrophobic material on its gold surface was coated by dipping method for better water management. To verify coating reliability, a single fuel cell(50cm2) was evaluated, and its durability over 4000hrs was demonstrated.

  • 본 총설에서는 캐패시터적인 특성을 가지는 다공성 전극의 전기화학특성 분석에 활용되는 임피던스의 복소캐패시턴스 분석법(complex capacitance analysis)의 이론 및 응용에 대해 정리하였다. 이론적으로 캐패시터적인 특성을 갖는 전기화학시스템에 대해 캐패시턴스허수부 도시를 활용하면 효과적인 해석이 가능함이 제시되었다. 또한, 복소캐패시턴스 분석법은 다공성 탄소 재료/전극의 EDLC 특성, 미세기공 내부의 이온전도 특성, 고분자전해질연료전지의 촉매층 이온저항 등의 분석에 효과적으로 적용될 수 있음이 검증되었다.

GDL을 고려한 고분자전해질형 연료전지 모사 단위 유로 채널에서의 물방울 유동 특성에 대한 실험적인 고찰 (Experimental Investigation of the Water Droplet Dynamics inside the Simulated PEMFC Single Flow Channel with GDL)

  • Polymer electrolyte membrane fuel cells (PEMFCs) are regarded as a promising alternative to replace the existing automotive power sources. To get high performance and long-term durability for PEMFC systems, novel water management is essential. To this end, a comprehensive understanding of dynamics of the liquid water droplets within an operating PEMFC plays an important role. In this work, direct visualization of dynamic behaviors of the water droplet in the ex situ unit flow channel of a PEMFC including gas diffusion layer (GDL) is carried out as one of the fundamental studies for novel water management. Water droplet dynamics such as the movement and growth of liquid water droplets are mainly presented. Effects of GDL characteristics and inlet air flow rate on the water droplet transport and its removal from the flow channel are also discussed. The data obtained in this study can contribute to build up the fundamental operating strategy including balanced water removal capacity for automotive PEMFC systems.
