  • Let p(z) be a polynomial of degree n and for any complex number 𝛽, let D𝛽p(z) = np(z) + (𝛽 - z)p'(z) denote the polar derivative of the polynomial with respect to 𝛽. In this paper, we consider the class of polynomial $$p(z)=(z-z_0)^s \left(a_0+\sum\limits_{{\nu}=0}^{n-s}a_{\nu}z^{\nu}\right)$$ of degree n having a zero of order s at z0, |z0| < 1 and the remaining n - s zeros are outside |z| < k, k ≥ 1 and establish upper bound estimates for the maximum of |D𝛽p(z)| as well as |p(Rz) - p(rz)|, R ≥ r ≥ 1 on the unit disk.

  • The purpose of this study was to isolate and identify wild yeasts from soil collected in Daegu City and Cheongyang County, Republic of Korea. Among 11 strains isolated in this study, nine strains were previously reported and two strains were unreported in Republic of Korea. To identify wild yeast strains, pairwise sequence comparisons of the D1/D2 region of the 26S rRNA gene sequence were done using Basic Local Alignment Search Tool (BLAST). The cell morphologies were observed by phase contrast microscope and assimilation test are done using API 20C AUX kit. All strains were assigned to the phylum Basidiomycota. Of the two unrecorded yeast strains, CY-9-10C belongs to the genus Mrakia (family Mrakiaceae, order Cystofilobasidiales, class Tremellomycetes) and PG3-4-10C belongs to the genus Slooffia (family Chrysozymaceae, order Microbotryomycetes incertae sedis, class Microbotryomycetes). Both strains had oval-shaped and polar budding cells. This research described the morphological and biochemical properties of the two unreported yeast species that had not officially reported in Korea.

  • In recent years, the demand for ships and offshore platforms that can navigate and operate through the Arctic Ocean has been rapidly increasing due to global warming and large reservoirs of oil and natural gas in the area. Winterization design is one of the key issues to consider in the robust structural safety design and building of ships that operate in the Arctic and Sub-Arctic regions. However, international regulations for winterization design in Arctic condition regulated that only those ships and offshore platforms with a Polar Class designation and/or an alternative standard. In order to cope with the rising demand for operating in the Arctic region, existing and new Arctic vessels with a Polar Class designation are lacking to cover for adequate winterization design with HSE philosophy. Existing ships and offshore platform was not designed based on reliable data based on numerical and experiment studies. There are only designed as a performance and functional purposes. It is very important to obtain of reliable data and provide of design guidance of the anti-icing structures by taking the effects of low temperature into consideration. Therefore, the main objective of this paper reconsiders anti-icing design of aluminum helideck using the heating cable. To evaluate of reliable data and recommend of anti-icing design method, various types of analysis and methods can be applied in general. In the present study, finite element method carried out the thermal analysis with cold chamber testing for performance and capacity of heating cables.

  • The development of a fish that functionally provides both antioxidant and fat-reducing effects is an important goal in nutrition and aquaculture research. Dietary conjugated linoleic acid(CLA) can be successfully incorporated in fish muscle and viscera, but CLA and carotenoids have not been evaluated in such fish. An 8 weeks growth trial was conducted using rainbow trout, and all fish were fed twice daily with experimental diets containing graded amounts of CLA(1% and 5%). At the end of the experiment, the daily growth index, feed conversion rate, lipid class, and fatty acid composition were determined. Dietary CLA did not enhance the growth parameters of rainbow trout but did improve the feed conversion rate. The muscular polar lipid content decreased during the feeding period, while the content was stable in the viscera. In addition, a diet high in CLA decreased the polyunsaturated fatty acid content, but had no effect on the content of monounsaturated and saturated fatty acid in muscle.

  • The taxonomic hierarchy of the phylum Proteobacteria was assessed, after which the isolation and classification state of Proteobacteria species with valid names for Korean indigenous isolates were studied. The hierarchical taxonomic system of the phylum Proteobacteria began in 1809 when the genus Polyangium was first reported and has been generally adopted from 2001 based on the road map of Bergey's Manual of Systematic Bacteriology. Until February 2018, the phylum Proteobacteria consisted of eight classes, 44 orders, 120 families, and more than 1,000 genera. Proteobacteria species isolated from various environments in Korea have been reported since 1999, and 644 species have been approved as of February 2018. In this study, all novel Proteobacteria species from Korean environments were affiliated with four classes, 25 orders, 65 families, and 261 genera. A total of 304 species belonged to the class Alphaproteobacteria, 257 species to the class Gammaproteobacteria, 82 species to the class Betaproteobacteria, and one species to the class Epsilonproteobacteria. The predominant orders were Rhodobacterales, Sphingomonadales, Burkholderiales, Lysobacterales and Alteromonadales. The most diverse and greatest number of novel Proteobacteria species were isolated from marine environments. Proteobacteria species were isolated from the whole territory of Korea, with especially large numbers from the regions of Chungnam/Daejeon, Gyeonggi/Seoul/Incheon, and Jeonnam/Gwangju. Most Halomonadaceae species isolated from Korean fermented foods and solar salterns were halophilic or halotolerant. Air-borne members of the genera Microvirga, Methylobacterium, and Massilia had common characteristics in terms of G+C content, major respiratory quinones, and major polar lipids.

  • The natural forest vegetation of the Piagol, Mt. Chiri, was classified into five major communities, i.e. Quercus mongolica, Carpinus laxiflora, C. tschonoskii, Q. serrata and Fraxinus mandshurica community. C. tschonoskii, C. laxiflora and Q. mongolica characteristically were dominated in the range of 500∼700 m, 700∼900 m and 900∼1,400 m in altitude, respectively. Abies nephrolepis and Rhododendron schlippenbachii in the ridge of Nogodan-Nalnaribong, and F. mandshurica and Q. serrata in the Yongsuam ravine were found as the dominant species. The transition between C. tschonoskii and C. laxiflora communities was relatively wide. The boundary between F. mandshurica, in the conglomerated zone, and the other communities surrounding its community was fairly abrupt. In Q. mongolica community, the canopy was relatively opened and the oak young tree of undergrowth was fairly dense. In the community of C. laxiflora and C. tschonoskii, the species composed of their understory was rich while their coverage was lower than that of Q. mongolica community. Shannon's diversity index was decreased in order of C. tschonoskii, C. laxiflora and Q. mongolica community, while their Simpson's dominance index increased conversely. Judging by the DBH-class distribution showing the negative exponential curve, these communities were considered as the climax forest. In Polar Ordination used samples (quadrats), the vegetation of the Piagol was divided into five groups, which was coincided with five communities classified by Braun-Blanquet system. In the ordination, the first axis and the second axis may be considered soil conditions and thermal conditions, respectively. It seems that two different methods, phytosociological method in macro level and ordination techniques in micro level, are useful for the vegetation classification.

  • In this paper, one of the widely-used ice resistance prediction methods, introduced by Spencer(1992) of the Institute for Ocean Technology, Canada, is reviewed. Spencer's component-based scaling system for ship-ice model tests is analysed to estimate the ice resistance of various types of icebreaking vessels (Canadian MV Arctic, Terry Fox, R-Class icebreaker, US icebreakers Polar Star and Healy, Russian SA-15 cargo ships, Japanese PM Teshio and a model ship). The general form and the non-dimensional coefficients in ice resistance prediction formula are obtained using the published ice model test and full-scale sea trial data. The applicability of Spencer's method on R-Class icebreaker is discussed to estimate ice resistance for the larger icebreaking cargo vessels. Additional parameters to account for the difference in hull forms of icebreakers and cargo vessels are recommended to be included in the Spencer's original ice resistance prediction formula.
