  • In this study, a specification for the filter system of plastic board drain using in korea. When PBDs was installed in the soft ground, bridging, blocking, blinding and clogging phenomena could be appeared near the PBD. Especially, clogging phenomena near the filter of PBD is very important factor to determine the life span of the vertical drainage system. Therefore, in this study, we proposed the specification on the filter of PBD considering the size of soil particle. To verify the proposed specification, model tests were conducted by using filter seepage tester. From the model test, newly proposed specification which considered the size of soil particle maintained the ability of seepage of the filter system of PBD.

  • The problems of bearing capacity, settlement and shear deformation occur when constructing a structure such as harbor, airport and bridge on soft ground of marine clay, silty clay or sandy soil. Various ground improvement methods are applied to obtain preceding settlement of soft ground and strength increase. In this study, to analyze the applicability of PBD method in deep soft ground, the compound drainage capacity test was operated in comparison with SD. As a result of the test, a minimum drainage capacity of drain material was estimated to be more than $10\;cm^3/sec$ at a more than $400\;kN/m^2$ and less than $5\;cm^3/sec$ at a more than $500\;kN/m^2$ confining pressure in case of single core PBD. In case of double core PBD, it was estimated to be more than $10\;cm^3/sec$ at a more than $500\;kN/m^2$ confining pressure.

  • In this study, Nano-geosynthetics with electroosmosis method was used and tried to verify the possibility of usage for soft ground improvement. Electroosmosis tests were performed with increasing the voltage level and changing distance between electrodes. The electrokinetic cell was assembled and a Nano-geosynthetics was inserted into the plastic drain board. And electroosmosis was applied to the disturbed kaolin clay. In order to study the effects of ground improvement, ground settlement, water content, collected pore water and shear strength were compared and analyzed with non-applied kaolin clay. Also, the electroosmosis tests were performed with changing the distance between electrodes and the voltage size. As a results of changing the distance and voltage between electrodes, the more voltage size was increased, the more the settlement of ground, shear strength and collected pore water were increased. As the distance between electrodes were increased, the settlement of ground, shear strength, water content and collected pore water were decreased. Finally, Nano-geosynthetics as a material of electrode have the sufficient potential to improve soft ground.

  • The Plastic Board Drain is used to improve soft soils deposited in container terminal area at a port. This paper describes settlement behavior of soft ground in this area from PBD installation to the time of operating facilities. Previous researches focused on soil improvement effect of PBD, that is, the settlement occurred during ground improvement period. The residual settlement occurred during operating the facility is very important from the maintenance and management point of view. However, the study of this residual settlement has been rarely conducted. In this study, by analyzing the measured settlement data obtained from the container terminal area at the port, it was verified that the residual settlement induced during operating facilities occurred in a layer with PBD improvement. In addition, by comparison the settlement predicted by a numerical analysis with the settlement measured in the field, it was confirmed that the actual settlement is in the range of predicted settlement.

  • To solve the problem of saturated dredged soil dumping area, it is possible to extend the life span of dredged soil dumping area by accelerating consolidation of dredged soil and making alluvial soil layer consolidated additionally by using dewatering method and PDF method without construction of new dumping area which entails great expense. Self-weight consolidation tests on samples from Busan and Incheon with the column of 400 mm in diameter were conducted to estimate those methods applicability to domestic dredged soil. As a result of tests, it was proved that dewatering method and PDF method were highly effective in increasing reclamation capacity of dredged soil by reduction of self-weight consolidation completion time and increase of self-weight consolidation settlement.

  • In this paper the factors developing ground disturbance with the penetration of PDB mandrels are analysed by using field reconnaissance and laboratory test. In the laboratory tests, the amount of smear zones around the PDB mandrels is compared with respect to the shape and the size of mandrels by penetrating model mandrels of various shapes into the reconstituted clay. The shapes of mandrels selected are circular, oval and rectangular. It was recognized from the field reconnaissance that the size and shape, driving techniques of mandrels, as well as the size and shape of anchor shoe could develop ground disturbance. The mandrels that would reduce the smear effect of clay is oval and rectangular shapes rat her than circular one. It was found that the smear effect becomes smaller as the ratio of the long and short edge of the rectangular shape mandrel becomes larger.

  • Recently, construction of reinforced earth structure using geosynthetics has been increased because it has advantages such as construction efficient, cost effectiveness and appearance aspect against existing gravity or cantilever retaining wall. However due to the climate change in Korea excessive inflow of ground water and surface water from heavy rainfall could affect the stability of reinforced retaining wall seriously. So the discharge capacity of drains should be evaluated by using experimental method in the design of reinforced earth wall. In this study, instead of concrete block used in most of the retaining wall, eco-friendly porous soilbag was used. This paper describes the test method and result of the laboratory testing for determination of discharge capacity utilizing PBDs.

  • To identify the reclamation history formed by top dredged soil reclamation layer over the original ground, various field tests and laboratory tests were conducted. Especially when the original ground was not completely consolidated, CPTu test was carried out to calculate rational settlement due to the banking load. CPTu test results showed that the degree of consolidation of weak clay ground by dredged reclamation was on average 80%. As the research area was not completely consolidated by dredged reclamation in the past, the consolidation settlement should account for the residual settlement (20%) in the case of additional banking load. When the degree of consolidation of the original ground was not taken into account, the residual consolidation was expected in excessive settlement (up to 20%) and in such case PBD (Plastic Board Drain) was not effective in obtaining desired degree of consolidation.

  • Dry and wet test methods established by Korean industrial standards to estimate opening size of 3 types of geotextile which are widely used for filter of plastic drain board in Korea are performed to evaluate characteristics of the test methods and to compare the test results. Judging from test results, dry method is a relatively poor test, having lots of problems causing many errors but a simple-quick test. Wet method is a very specific test avoiding many of the problems of dry method such as electrostatic charges, trapping in the geotextiles and so on. However, one of wet test methods, KS K ISO 12956, takes long time to complete a test and is too strict to handle loss of granular material. Generally, opening size of a geotextile by wet test method is smaller than that of dry test method. Especially, opening size by KS F 2126 which is called hydrodynamic method but at present is not used anymore is similar to or smaller than that by KS K ISO 12956 method.
