We report first results from KVN and VERA Array (KaVA) VLBI observations obtained in the frame of our Plasma-physics of Active Galactic Nuclei (PAGaN) project. We observed eight selected AGN at 22 and 43 GHz in single polarization (LCP) between March 2014 and April 2015. Each source was observed for 6 to 8 hours per observing run to maximize the uv coverage. We obtained a total of 15 deep high-resolution images permitting the identification of individual circular Gaussian jet components and three spectral index maps of BL Lac, 3C 111 and 3C 345 from simultaneous dual-frequency observations. The spectral index maps show trends in agreement with general expectations – flat core and steep jets – while the actual value of the spectral index for jets shows indications for a dependence on AGN type. We analyzed the kinematics of jet components of BL Lac and 3C 111, detecting superluminal proper motions with maximum apparent speeds of about 5c. This constrains the lower limits of the intrinsic component velocities to ~ 0.98c and the upper limits of the angle between jet and line of sight to ~20°. In agreement with global jet expansion, jet components show systematically larger diameters d at larger core distances r, following the global relation d ≈ 0.2r, albeit within substantial scatter.
Direct solid analysis of various kinds of metal samples has been conducted by glow discharge. In this laboratory, the gas-jet assisted glow discharge(GJGD) device has been developed and characterized. The effect of changes in applied current, cell pressure and flow rate on atomic emission signals obtained from a jet-assisted cathodic sputtering was investigate. The emission intensities of Cu, Zn, and Ar were measured. They were increased with the current. But the intensities were decreased by increasing the flow rate of argon due to the diffusion and transportation of particles into plasma. By increasing the pressure of the cell, the intensities were greatly decreased because of enhancement of redeposition onto the surface of the sample.
In this work, we introduce a newly constructed arc-jet device of 150 kW input power. The design of this device is a Huels type with a narrow downstream electrode. General features of this device are first described. From the measured values of electrical power input, heat discharged into cooling water, gas flow rate, and settling chamber pressure, average enthalpy was determined using the heat balance and sonic throat methods. Using the settling chamber pressure and average enthalpy values, the flow properties in the nozzle and the heat transfer rate to the stagnation point of a blunt body are calculated accounting for thermochemical nonequilibrium. The envelope of enthalpy, pressure, degree of dissociation, and heat transfer rate are presented. Stagnation temperature is predicted to be between 4630 to 6050 $^{\circ}K$, and the stagnation point heat transfer rate is predicted to be between 175 and 318 W/$cm^{2}$ for a blunt body of 3 mm nose radius. Degree of dissociation in the stagnation region of the blunt body exceeds 30%.

The surface cleaning method based on the laser-induced breakdown (LIB) of gas and subsequent plasma and shock wave generation can remove small particles from solid surfaces. In the laser shock cleaning (LSC) process, a high-power laser pulse induces optical breakdown of the ambient gas above the solid surface covered with contaminant particles. The subsequently created shock wave followed by a high-speed flow stream detaches the particles. In this work, a novel surface cleaning process using laser-induced breakdown of liquid is introduced and demonstrated. LIB of a micro liquid jet increases the shock wave intensity and thus removes smaller particle than the conventional LSC method. Experiments demonstrate that the cleaning force and cleaning efficiency are also increased significantly by this method.

Aerodynamic flow control phenomena were investigated with a low-current DC surface discharge plasma actuator. The plasma actuator was found to operate in three different discharge modes with similar discharge currents of about 1 mA or less. Stable continuous DC discharge without audible noise was obtained at higher ballast resistances and lower discharge currents. However, even with continuous DC power input, a low-frequency self-pulsed discharge was obtained at lower ballast resistances, and a high-frequency self-pulsed discharge was obtained at higher set-point currents and higher ballast resistances, both with audible noise. The Schlieren image reveals that the low-frequency self-pulsed mode produces a synthetic jet-like flow implying that a gas heating effect plays a role, even though the discharge current is small. The high-frequency self-pulsed mode produces pulsed jets in a tangent direction, and the continuous DC mode produces a steady straight pressure wave. Particle image velocimetry (PIV) images reveal that the induced flow field by the low-frequency self-pulsed mode has flow propagating in the radial direction and centered between the electrodes. The high-frequency self-pulsed mode and continuous DC mode produce flow from the anode to the cathode. The perturbed region downstream of the cathode is larger in the high-frequency self-pulsed mode with similar maximum speeds.

The effect of $CF_4$ plasma treatment condition on the interfacial adhesion energy of inkjet printed Ag/polyimide system is evaluated from $180^{\circ}$ peel test by calculating the plastic deformation energy of peeled metal films. Interfacial fracture energy between Ag and as-received polyimide was 5.5 g/mm. $CF_4$ plasma treatment on the polyimide surface enhanced the interfacial fracture energy up to 17.6 g/mm. This is caused by the increase in the surface roughness as well as the change in functional group of the polyimide film due to $CF_4$ plasma treatment on the polyimide surface. Therefore, both the mechanical interlocking effect and the chemical bonding effect are responsible for interfacial adhesion improvement in ink jet printed Ag/polyimide systems.
In this study we aimed to derive the response surface models for Escherichia coli reduction in wheat flour using atmospheric cold plasma (ACP) with three types of gas. The jet-type atmospheric cold plasma wand system was used with a 30 W power supply, and three gases (argon, air, and nitrogen) were applied as the treatment gas. The operating parameters for process optimization considered were wheat flour mass (g), treatment time (min), and gas flow rate (L/min). The wheat flour samples were artificially contaminated with E. coli at a concentration of 9.25 ± 0.74 log CFU/g. ACP treatments with argon, air, and nitrogen resulted in 2.66, 4.21, and 5.55 log CFU/g reduction of E. coli, respectively, in wheat flour under optimized conditions. The optimized conditions to reduce E. coli were 0.5 g of the flour mass, 15 min of treatment time, and 0.20 L/min of nitrogen gas flow rate, and the predicted highest reduction level from modeling was 5.63 log CFU/g.
The electric potential of plasma column is measured with the high voltage probe in a pair of atmospheric plasma jets operated by AC-voltage. According to the polarity of voltage applied to the electrodes, the polarity of plasma column potential has the same polarity of applied voltage. The high potential of plasma column at the side of high voltage electrode is decreased linearly along the plasma column to the ground side. Therefore, the plasma column seams to be a kind of resistor whose resistivity is a few 10s $M{\Omega}/m$. In the experiment of double-jets system, the polarity of plasma potential is verified to be the same polarity to the applied voltage. When the different voltage polarities are applied to the electrodes of double plasma jets, the attractive force is acted between two plumes at the merged plasma and the plasma potential is measured to be low as a few 10s V. When the same polarity of voltage is applied to the electrode, the repulsive force is acted and the plasma potential is measured to be high as a several 100s V at the merged plumes. In the exposure of plasma plume on the bio-substrate with the double plasma jets, the electric shock and thermal damage might be proportional to the plasma power which is the multiplication of the plasma potential and the plasma current.

Among various metal oxide semiconductors, ZnO has an excellent electrical, optical properties with a wide bandgap of 3.3 eV. It can be applied as a photocatalytic material due to its high absorption rate along with physical and chemical stability to UV light. In addition, it is important to control the morphology of ZnO because the size and shape of the ZnO make difference in physical properties. In this paper, we demonstrate synthesis of size-controlled ZnO tetrapods using an atmospheric pressure plasma system. A micro-sized Zn spherical powder was continuously introduced in the plume of the atmospheric plasma jet ignited with mixture of oxygen and nitrogen. The effect of plasma power and collection sites on ZnO nanostructure was investigated. After the plasma discharge for 10 min, the produced materials deposited inside the 60-cm-long quartz tube were obtained with respect to the distance from the plume. According to the SEM analysis, all the synthesized nanoparticles were found to be ZnO tetrapods ranging from 100 to 600-nm-diameter depending on both applied power and collection site. The photocatalytic efficiency was evaluated by color change of methylene blue solution using UV-Vis spectroscopy. The photocatalytic activity increased with the increase of (101) and (100) plane in ZnO tetrapods, which is caused by enhanced chemical effects of plasma process.
