  • In spherical panoramic images, SURF, a feature description method for planar patterns, does not work correctly due to heavy spherical distortion. Since a plane pattern is distorted in a spherical image, the pattern search and replacement in a spherical panoramic image should be treated differently from the case of the planar image. This paper proposes a planar texture replacement method, which transforms a spherical panoramic image into a cubemap panoramic image, searches a pattern using SURF, replaces a plane pattern, and then converts it into a spherical panoramic image.

  • A planar inductively coupled $CH_4/H_2/Ar$plasma was used to investigate dry etch characteristics of GaN as a function of input power, RF bias power, and etch gas composition. Etch rate of GaN increased with input power up to 600 W and was saturated at the higher power. Also, the etch rates increased with increasing RF bias power, composition of $CH_4$ and Ar gas. We achieved the maximum etch rate of $930{\AA}$/min at the input power 400 W, RF bias power 250 W, and operational pressure 10 mTorr. This paper shows that smooth etched surface having roughness less than 1 nm in rms can be obtained by using planar inductively coupled plasma with $CH_4/H_2/Ar$ gas chemistry.

  • Aluminum die casting is an important manufacturing process for mechanical components. Die casting is known to be more accurate than other types of casting; however, post-machining is usually necessary to achieve the required accuracy. The goal of this investigation is to develop machining- free aluminum die casting. Improvement of the accuracy of planar and cylindrical parts is expected by correcting metal molds. In the proposed method, the shape of cast aluminum made with the initial metal molds is measured by 3D scanning. The 3D scan data includes information about deformations that occur during casting. Therefore, it is possible to estimate the deformation and correction amounts by comparing 3D scan data with product computer-aided design (CAD) data. We corrected planar and cylindrical parts of the CAD data for the mold. In addition, we corrected the planar part of the metal mold using the corrected mold data. The effectiveness of the proposed method is demonstrated by evaluating the accuracy improvement of the cast aluminum made with the corrected mold.

  • An upright drawing of a planar graph G on k layers is a planar straight-line drawing of G, where the vertices of G are placed on a set of k horizontal lines, called layers and no two adjacent vertices are placed on the same layer. There is a previously known algorithm that decides in linear time whether a planar graph admits an upright drawing on k layers for a fixed value of k. However, the constant factor in the running time of the algorithm increases exponentially with k and makes it impractical even for k = 3. In this paper, we give a linear-time algorithm to examine whether a biconnected planar graph G admits an upright drawing on three layers and to obtain such a drawing if it exists. We also give a necessary and sufficient condition for a tree to have an upright drawing on three layers. Our algorithms in both the cases are much simpler and easier to implement than the previously known algorithms.

  • In this study, we are investigated experimentally the pumping characteristics about the pumping channel shapes of disk-type drag pump (DTDP). We are experimented the pumping performance about the rotors which have channel or do not exist. The channel disk-type rotor has spiral channels both upper and lower part, and stator is planar. The planar disk-type rotor hasn't channel and stator has spiral channels both upper and lower part. The flow-meter method is adopted to calculate the pumping speed. Compression ratio and pumping speeds for the nitrogen gas are measured under the inlet pressure range of 0.001 ${\sim}$ 4 Torr. The maximum of compression ratio was about 3300 for three-stage DTDP (channel disk-type rotor), 1000 for four-stage (planar disk-type rotor) and two-stage DTDP (channel disk-type rotor) at zero throughput. The ultimate pressure was $1.6{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr for three-stage DTDP (channel disk-type rotor), $2.5{\times}10^{-6}$ Torr for four-stage DTDP (planar disk-type rotor).

  • Water jet impingement cooling is used to remove heat from high-temperature surfaces such as hot steel plates in the steel manufacturing process (thermo-mechanical cooling process; TMCP). In those processes, uniform cooling is the most critical factor to ensure high strength steel and good quality. In this study, experiments are performed to measure the heat transfer coefficient together with the inverse heat conduction problem (IHCP) analysis for a plate cooled by planar water jet. In the inverse heat transfer analysis, spatial and temporal variations of heat transfer coefficient, with no information regarding its functional form, are determined by employing the conjugate gradient method with an adjoint problem. To estimate the two dimensional distribution of heat transfer coefficient and heat flux for planar waterjet cooling, eight thermo-couple are installed inside the plate. The results show that heat transfer coefficient is approximately uniform in the span-wise direction in the early stage of cooling. In the later stage where the forced-convection effect is important, the heat transfer coefficient becomes larger in the edge region. The surface temperature vs. heat flux characteristics are also investigated for the entire boiling regimes. In addition, the heat transfer rate for the two different plate geometries are compared at the same Reynolds number.

  • The kinematics with the instantaneous motion and statics of a manipulator has generally been proven algebraically. The algebraic solutions give very simple and straightforward results but the solutions do not have any meaning in physics or geometry. Therefore it is not easy to extend the algebraic results to design or control a robotic manipulator efficiently. Recently, geometrical approach to define the instantaneous motion or static relation of a manipulator is popularly researched and the results have very strong advantages to have a physical insight in the solution. In this paper, the instantaneous motion and static relation of a planar manipulator are described by geometrical approach, specifically by an axis screw and a line screw. The mass center of a triangle with weight and a perpendicular distance between the two screws are useful geometric measures for geometric analysis. This study provides a geometric interpretation of the kinematics and statics of a planar manipulator, and the method can be applied to design or control procedure from the geometric information in the equations.

  • This paper presented a design technique of planar magnetic components for forward converter. Planar magnetic components are a good solution for high frequency switching-mode power supplies(SMPS). Since these kind of magnetic components have some advantages(low leakage inductance, low profile, low weight, minimum EMI etc.) that improve the SMPS performance, their use is growing in the last years. In this paper, the performance of designed system is verified by simulation and experiment by comparing the system using conventional magnetic components and the system using planar magnetic components.

  • This paper presents the improving impedance charactersitics of a planar monopole antenna with a vertical ground plane. For improving impedance characteristics, we used the effect of a vertical ground plane. To analyze the effect of vertical ground plane, we proposed the dipole antenna mode. the impedance characteristics of planar monopole antenna are improved by correlation between monopole antenna and vertical ground plane, based on each operating mode. Our analysis indicates can improve the impedance characteristics of varying planae monopole antennas.

  • This paper presents development of a geometrically nonlinear triangular planar element including rotational degrees of freedom, based on the co-rotational(CR) formulation. The CR formulation is one of the efficient geometrically nonlinear formulations and it is based on the assumptions on small strain and large rotation. In this paper, modified CR formulation is suggested for the developemnt of a triangular planar element. The present development is validated regarding the static and time transient problems. The present results are compared with the results predicted by the previous researchers and those obtained by the existing commercial software.
