In this study, the behavior of external beam-column joints reinforced by plain and deformed bars with non-seismic reinforcement details is investigated and compared. The beam-column joints represented in this study include a benchmark specimen by seismic details in accordance with ACI 318M-11 requirements and four other deficient specimens. The main defects of the non-seismic beam-column joints included use of plain bar, absence of transverse steel hoops, and the anchorage condition of longitudinal reinforcements. The experimental results indicate that using of plain bars in non-seismic beam-column joints has significantly affected the failure modes. The main failure mode of the non-seismic beam-column joints reinforced by deformed bars was the accumulation of shear cracks in the joint region, while the failure mode of the non-seismic beam-column joints reinforced by plain bars was deep cracks at the joint face and intersection of beam and column and there was only miner diagonal shear cracking at the joint region. In the other way, use of plain bars for reinforcing concrete can cause the behavior of the substructure to be controlled by slip of the beam longitudinal bars. The experimental results show that the ductility of non-seismic beam-column joints reinforced by plain bars has not decreased compared to the beam-column joints reinforced by deformed bars due to lack of mechanical interlock between plain bars and concrete. Also it can be seen a little increase in ductility of substructure due to existence of hooks at the end of the development length of the bars.
PURPOSES : In this study, we analyzed the compressive strength characteristics of lean base concrete in relation to changes in the outdoor temperature after analyzing the cold and hot weather temperature standards and calculated the minimum and maximum temperatures when pouring concrete. We examined the rate of strength development of lean base concrete in relation to the temperature change and derived an appropriate analysis formula for FRC base structures by assigning the accumulated strength data and existing maturity formula. METHODS : We measured the strength changes at three curing temperatures (5, 20, and $35^{\circ}C$) by curing the concrete in a temperature range that covered the lowest temperature of the cold period, $5^{\circ}C$, to the highest temperature of the hot period, $35^{\circ}C$. We assigned the general lean concrete and FRC as test variables. A strength test was planned to measure the strength after 3, 5, 7, 14, and 28 days. RESULTS : According to the results of compressive strength tests of plain concrete and FRC in relation to curing temperature, the plain concrete had a compressive strength greater than 5 MPa at all curing temperatures on day 5 and satisfied the lean concrete standard. In the case of FRC, because the initial strength was substantially reduced as a result of a 30% substitution of fly ash, it did not satisfy the strength standard of 5 MPa when it was cured at $5^{\circ}C$ on day 7. In addition, because the fly ash in the FRC caused a Pozzolanic reaction with the progress into late age, the amount of strength development increased. In the case of a curing temperature of $20^{\circ}C$, the FRC strength was about 66% on day 3 compared with the plain concrete, but it is increased to about 77% on day 28. In the case of a curing temperature of $35^{\circ}C$, the FRC strength development rate was about 63% on day 3 compared with the plain concrete, but it increased to about 88% on day 28. CONCLUSIONS : We derived a strength analysis formula using the maturity temperatures with all the strength data and presented the point in time when it reached the base concrete standard, which was 5 MPa for each air temperature. We believe that our findings could be utilized as a reference in the construction of base concrete for a site during a cold or hot weather period.

In recent years, the demand for the development of high quality and cost effective materials, as well as the competition to ensure a diverse and sufficient amount of ready-mixed concrete, has been increasing rapidly. In this experiment, concretes made with different admixtures are blended with each other in different combinations and ratios, in order to identify potential problems. The first test was a slump level test, in which all of the concretes met the required numbers, as they also did in the test for air content. Plain organic acid concrete scored the highest in bleeding amount, but organic acid mix in general showed a similar outcome. In the early measurement of compressive strength, plain naphthalene concrete was the strongest. Of the blends, the 5:5 mix of organic acid and naphthalene was the strongest. In the standard measurement, the 5:5 mix of naphthalene and lignin was the strongest. Tensile strength tests revealed similar results. Length change rate proved to be greater in blended concrete than in plain concrete, and dry shrinkage rate was highest in the 7:3 ratio blends. Through SEM photo analysis, it was confirmed that the 7:3 ratio blends contained more micro-voids. In conclusion, with the exception of a specific few combinations, it was found that the blending of different types of concrete is undesirable due to the delayed coagulation time as well as the early decrease in strength.

This study as using admixture (G), high early strength agent, calcium hydroxide {a(OH)2} and fine particle cement, etc which have been newly developed for the purpose of quality improvements like the improvement of early strength of concrete that the FA was substituted by 20%, etc, reviewed the possibility of the utilization in the great quantity and the results are summarized as the followings. Slump loss by the kind of mixing material of high early strength agent and Ca(OH)$_2$ showed the smaller width of decrease than that of plain to appear the improved results and fine particle cement and G admixture showed the large slump loss. Air contents were appeared to satisfy the target air contents at all mixing materials. Regarding the compressive strength of the concrete by the kind of mixing material, G admixture was appeared to be highest all on aging 3 days, 7days and 28days at the initial strength. And fine particle cement and high early strength agent showed higher strength increase rate on aging 3days than plain but showed that the increase of strength becomes gradually dulled as aging is increased. And Ca(OH)$_2$ had almost no effect.

This paper is to investigate the mock up test results of mass concrete for transfer girder using setting time difference with super retarding agent(SRA) to reduce hydration heat. According to test results, the temperature history of plain concrete without placing lift had a steep rising curvature, and plain concrete had a big temperature difference between surface and middle section of mass concrete, which may result in occurrence of temperature crack. However, considering placing method B, because setting time of middle section concrete was retarded with an increase in SRA contents, higher hydration heat temperature was observed at surface section concrete compared with that at middle section concrete at early age, which can lower the possibility of hydration heat crack. In case of placing method C, although peak temperature of hydration heat was much lower, at early age, high crack occurrence possibility of the hydration heat attributable to the big temperature difference between middle section and bottom section of concrete was expected at bottom section concrete. Therefore, the structure above the ground like transfer girder is not applicable to consider the placing method C.

Wasting fiberous residues from the cutting processes of steel materials at an iron-Works were mixed with concrete. The strength and toughness of steel fiber concrete with different steel contents were tested in a laboratory. The test results showed that the steel fiber residues can be used for the reinforcement of concrete. The potential applications of such product include floor constructions for facilities like dairy barns, grain storages, and machinery shops. The test results are as follows. 1. The compressive strengths of steel fiber concrete with one percent steel content by volume were 20 percent greater than that of plain concrete. The treatments also increased the concrete toughness by 96 percent. 2. When applied to tensile forces, the steel fiber concrete showed the increased strengths by 20 percent, and the toughness by 48 percent. 3. The steel content levels greater than or equal to 1.5 percent by volume resulted in the decreases of the compressive and tensile strengths of steel fiber concrete by 10 percent as compared to plain concrete. The concrete toughness increased with the steel contents. 4. The reinforcement effects of steel fiber depend on the quality of fiber material being used. Good steel fiber for concrete reinforcement appears to be uniform in shape and component, fine and long, and round-shaped.

This paper presents the evaluation of pullout strengths of expansion anchors and wedge anchors that can cause a failure of the concrete on the basis of the design for anchorage. Tests are conducted for heavy-duty anchors and wedge anchors domestically manufactured and to be installed in plain concrete member. The mainly testing parameters reflected the effects of edge distance. Design of post-installed steel anchors is presented by the Concrete Capacity Design(CCD) in European Organization for Technical Approval. This approach is compared to the well-known provisions, ACI 349-90 specification. The use of both methods to predict the concrete failure load of expansion anchor in uncracked concrete under monotonic loading for important applications is compared. In this study, the concrete tension capacity of fastenings with Heavy-duty Anchors and Wedge Anchors in plain concrete predicted by ACI 349-90 and the Concrete Capacity Design method has been compared with the results of tests.

In recent years, it has been found that one of the most significant factors in the reduction of the life of concrete pavements is the presence of voids beneath the slab. In the design of pavement, it is assumed that there is a full support through the length of the pavement. When a void develops, this assumption is no longer vaild. With increasing void size, traffic loads have a very a significant increase in stress. Thus, the combination of existing voids and increasing traffic loads results in significant pavement life reduction. Basea on the results of an experimental deflection using Dynaflect device and a theoretical one on the pavement model, this study presents a rational evaluation technique for detecting voids beneath the plain reinforced concrete pavement.

In this paper we present tile results of an experimental investigation on the physical and mechanical properties of carbon fiber grid, polymer mortar, and carbon fiber grid reinforced plain concrete flexural members. In order to repairing and reinforcing damaged and/or deteriorated existing concrete structural members, new materials have been developed and utilized in the construction industries. But the physical and mechanical behaviors of the material are not well understood. To use the material effectively various aspects of the material must be throughly investigated analytically as well as experimentally. In this investigation we found the physical and mechanical properties of carbon fiber grid and polymer mortar which are directly utilized in the repair and reinforcement design of damaged or deteriorated concrete structures. In addition, we also investigate the strengthening effect of carbon fiber grid on the plain concrete flexural test specimens. It was found that the material can be used to repair and strengthen the concrete structures effectively.
