  • To reduce the production cost of $Pleurotus$ $ostreatus$, discarded medicinal sludge was collected from oriental medical clinics to develop the $Pleurotus$ $ostreatus$ culture medium. According to the analysis of the proximate composition of the materials used in Korean herb medicine, the crude ash contents of $Carthamus$ $tinctrius$ L stem and $Acanthopanax$ $chiisanensis$ were 11.6% and 10.1% respectively, which were relatively higher than the 9.6% of the control medium, waste cotton. Crude protein was detected in 9.8% of the waste cotton medium, whereas it was detected in 14.9%, 13.9%, 13.4%, and 11.5%, of wild mugwort, $Acanthopanax$ $\underline{chiisanensis}$, medicinal sludge, and $Carthamus$ $tinctrius$ L stem, respectively, which are all higher than the control. The pH of medicinal sludges, wild mugwort, and $Aacanthopanax$ $chiisanenses$ ranged from 5.27 to 5.72, which was similar to the 5.70 pH value of waste cotton. In the case of addition concentration of each Korean herb medicine material influencing mycelial growth of the $Pleurotus$ $ostreatus$, the 9% concentration was more favorable compared to that of 3% and 6%. However, the addition of Korean herb medicine materials did not significantly affect the growth of $P.$ $tolaassi$ and $Trichoderma$ $sp.$ According to a field experiment that added 9% of medicinal sludge into the waste cotton medium, the mycelial growth of mushrooms was facilitated by approximately 2 days, and the mushroom yield was increased by 10~15%. Furthermore, pileus and stipe of the mushrooms were even and superior in quality.

  • The objectives of this experiment were to study the growth and development of fruiting body of the two Ganoderma lucidum isolates on log of the soft wood Paraserianthes falcataria and the hard wood Shorea sp., and determination of organic germanium and crude ganoderic acid content of the fruiting body produced. The two Ganoderma lucidum isolates used were one Indonesian native (Indonesia isolate) and another isolate was purchased from Fungi Perfecti, USA (commercial isolate). The development and quality of the primordium and fruiting body of the mushroom, in general, were influenced by the isolates used. The types of wood, however, had no effect on the quality of the primordium and fruiting body produced. The Indonesian isolate produced better fruiting body compared to that of the commercial isolate. The development of fruiting body from primordium, however, was low for the two isolates tested. In general, only about one third of the primordium developed further into mature fruiting bodies, except for the commercial isolate grown on the soft wood medium in which more than 60% of the primordium developed into mature fruiting body. Apart from producing normal fruiting body, the commercial isolate also produced an abnormal one, which had a white mature pileus, whereas the normal one was brownish red. The organic germanium concentration of the fruiting body produced on the hard wood, in general, was higher than that of grown on the soft wood. The fruiting body from commercial isolate had higher organic germanium concentration compared to that of Indonesian isolate in both wood types. The two isolates used, however, had almost the same value of the crude ganoderic acid concentration in both types of wood tested. The Indonesian isolate had higher total yield of both organic germanium and crude ganoderic acid of the fruiting body produced compared to that of the commercial isolate.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the optimum additive ratio of barley flour when used instead of cotton seed meal for the cultivation of oyster mushrooms. Mycelial growth was the fastest to 11.4 cm in medium containing 5% barley flour and to 9.0 cm in medium containing 30% barley flour. The mycelial density was slightly lower at 5% and 10% of barley powder addition, but there was no significant difference between the other treatments. The yield of the fruiting bodies was 158 g/850 mL, which was highest on treatment with 10% barley flour as a substitute for cotton seed meal. However, this was lower on treatments with only barley flour than in the control (156 g/850 mL). The diameter of the pileus and the hardness of stipes were highest with 10% barley flour and 10% in cotton seed meal, respectively. The L value was highest with 10% added barley flour, but the a-value and the b-value were not significantly different between treatments. The pH of the mixed media before inoculation with Pleurotus ostreatus was 4.7-5.0, and the total nitrogen content was 1.7-2.2, which was slightly lower than that of the control. The total carbon content was 44.6-45.0, which was not significantly different from that of the control. However, the content of trace elements such as Cu and Fe was lower than those of the control.

  • For the bottle cultivation of pleurotus nebrodensis, poplar tree sawdust was a better substrate than corncobs in terms of primordia and growth characteristics. The nutrition rich substrate was cottonseed dregs, cottonseed coat, bran, corn powder, and rice bran. The mixing ratio was adjusted such that the nitrogen content was ${\leq}58%$; cotton seed dregs, at the level of 20%, were particularly necessary to adjust the nitrogen content for the substrates that had high total nitrogen content. Additionally, inclusion of calcium carbonate in the substrate was better for primordia and growth characteristics than inclusion of calcium hydroxide. In the absence of calcium carbonate, the elasticity of pileus and stipe decreased and their hardness increased. Therefore, the optimum substrate composition for the cultivation of Pleurotus nebrodensis was 40:20:20:15:3:2 mixing ratio of poplar tree sawdust, cottonseed dregs, cottonseed coat, bran, corn powder, and calcium carbonate.

  • 'Yong-A' was bred by Jeollanamdo Agricultural Research and Extension Services in 2015. It was primarily selected through monospore crossing between JNM21008 and JNM21013 in 2009. The strain is named as JNM-Mi-194 and 'Yong-A', showing major characteristics with good production yield. The cultivation characteristics, yield potential, and fruiting body characteristics of 'Yong-A' are as follows; The wrinkle of the fruiting body was of branching type its shape was wave type. MCM, YM, Malt, and PDA media were suitable for growth of this cultivar. The number of effective stipes was 13 ea/0.9 kg. The minor axis of pileus was 5 cm and the major axis was 9 cm. The yield was 291 g per plastic bag (0.9 kg). Yong-A required 60 days for mycelial running at $20^{\circ}C$. The growth and primordial period required 24 days, which was shorter than that of JNM-Mi-21002 (the conventional cultivar). Somatic incompatibility was observed between parental lines and Yong-A. Analysis of genetic diversity in the new variety 'Yong-A' showed a different profile compared to that of the parent strain when Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA primers were used.

  • The button mushroom 'A. bisporus' is the most commonly grown mushroom worldwide. The color of 'Agaricus bisporus' is white and brown. Recently, the consumption of brown button mushrooms has been increasing steadily. 'Danseok-1ho' was bred using the multi-spore random mating method and named after Danseok Mountain in Gyeongju, the region where 'A. bisporus' was first grown in Korea. The optimum temperature for mycelial growth was between $20^{\circ}C$ and $30^{\circ}C$, and the mushroom production temperature was between $15^{\circ}C$ and $20^{\circ}C$. The color and shape of 'Danseok-1ho' are medium brown and spherical, respectively. The width and thickness of the pileus are 45.1 mm and 23.5 mm, respectively. The hardness and L of chromaticity of 'Danseok-1ho' are $8,937g/{\Phi}5mm$ and 50.4, respectively. The incubation period is around 20 days and mushroom production takes about 18 days after casing. A typical characteristic of 'Danseok-1ho' is that the individual occurrence rate is high, so mushroom losses are low during harvest.
