Acoustic field simulation of a PZT4 disc projector using a coupled FE-BE method

  • This paper describes the application of a coupled finite element-boundary element method (FE-BEM) to obtain the steady-state response of a piezoelectric transducer. The particular structure considered is a PZT4 disc-typed projector. The projector is three-dimensionally simulated to transduce applied electric charge on axial surfaces of the piezoelectric disc to acoustic pressure in air or in water. The directivity pattern of the acoustic field formed from the projected sound pressure is also simulated. And the displacement of the disc caused by the externally applied electric charge is shown in temporal motion. The coupled FE-BE method is described in detail.

  • The dynamic model and displacement control of piezoelectric actuators, which are commercially available materials for managing extremely small displacements in the range of sub-nanometers, are presented. Piezoceramics have electromechanical characteristics that transduce energy between the electrical and mechanical domains. However, they have hysteresis between the input voltage and output displacement, and this behavior is very demanding and complicated. In this paper, we propose a method of designing the control algorithm, and present the dynamic modeling equations that represent the hysteretic behavior between input voltage and output displacement. For this process, the piezoelectric actuator is treated as a second-order linear dynamic system and system constants are determined by the system identification method. Also, a classical PID controller is designed and used to regulate the output displacement of the actuator. To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, numerical simulation results are presented.

The particular structure considered is a flooded piezoelectric spherical shell. The hydrophone is three-dimensionally simulated to transduce an incident plane acoustic pressure onto the outer surface of the sonar spherical shell to electrical potentials on inner and outer surfaces of the shell. The acoustic field formed from the scattered sound pressure is also simulated. And the displacement of the shell caused by the externally incident acoustic pressure is shown in temporal motion. The coupled FE-BE method is described in detail.

  • 광간섭 단층촬영(OCT)용으로 원통형 압전소자(PZT)와 단일모드 광섬유를 이용한 광경로 지연기를 제작하여 정현파로 구동하고 특성을 분석하였다. 제작한 OCT 시스템은 검침단과 기준단을 대칭 구동하는 이중 광경로 지연방식을 사용하였다. 정현파 구동을 통한 PZT 광경로 지연 방식은 삼각파 구동과 비교하여 입력파형의 첨두 부분에서의 비선형현상을 제거하여 높은 반복성을 나타냄을 보였고, 삼각파 구동으로는 불가능했던 부분을 영상화 할 수 있었다.

  • A ultrasonic transduce with a single acoustic matching layer has been designed as an attempt to increase the bandwidth of underwater transducer. The wideband resonance condition was accomplished by attaching a single matching layer on the front face of a ceramic resonator composed of a piezoelectric bar, a taper part and a head part. A modified Mason's model was used for the performance analysis and the design of transducers, and the constructed transducers were tested experimentally and numerically by changing the impedance and thickness of the matching layer in the water tank.The obtained results are summarized as follows:1. Measured resonant and antiresonant frequencies of the piezoelectric transducer with no matching layer in air were 24.7 kHz and 25.6 kHz, respectively. 2. Two resonant frequencies of the piezoelectric transducer with a single matching layer were 21.7 kHx and 26.9 kHz, respectively, in air and 21.4 kHz and 22.7 kHz, respectively, with a water load.3. Two distinct resonance peaks in the transmitting voltage response(TVR) of the developed transducer were observed at 22.0 kHz and 25.8 kHz, respectively, with center frequency of 24.0 kHz. The values of TVR at these frequencies were 130.1 dB re $1 \muPa$/V at 22.0 kHz and 128.5 dB re $1 \muPa$/V at 25.8 kHz, respectively.Reasonable agreement between the experimental results and the numerical values was achieved.

시간영역 광 간섭 단층촬영 시스템의 소형 엔도스코프 제작 및 영상구현 (Endoscopic Imaging and Fabrication of Micro-endoscope Catheter in Time-domain Optical Coherence Tomography)

  • 광 간섭 단층촬영 시스템(OCT)을 위한 소형의 광섬유 도관형 주사장치인 엔도스코프(endoscope catheter)를 제작하였다. 깊이방향 주사장치인 원통형 압전소자(PZT)를 이용한 광경로 지연기는 정현파 1 kHz로 구동하여 시간영역에서 엔도스코프 OCT 영상을 구현하였다. 정현파로 구동한 광경로 지연기의 속도는 6 m/s 이고, 깊이방향 스캐닝의 데이터 획득은 3 mm 기준에서 초당 2000 라인이다. 제작한 엔도스코프로 사람의 손가락 및 귀에 대한 초당 10프레임의 OCT 영상을 성공적으로 획득하였다.

Guided-Waves-Based Mortar-Filled Steel Pipe Inspection Using EMAT End Wavelet Transform

  • Guided-waves-based mortar-filled steel pipe inspection is carried out through using EMAT (Electro magnetic acoustic transducer) and wavelet transform. Possibly existing anomalies such as separation (or void) and inclusion are made in the fabricated mortar-fled steel pipes: these anomalies are infected. Since guided waves have the long range inspection capability, EMAT has its own advantages over the conventional PZT (Piezoelectric zirconate titanate), and wavelet transform gives the multi-resolution on time-frequency domain results, the suggested technique gives an alternative way for inspecting mortar-filled steel pipes, which are popularly used for supporting marine structures such as piers, wharfs, moles, and dolphins. Through this study, it is show that the suggested technique is promising for detecting the amounts of separations and inclusions.
