  • The cryptic mealybug, Pseudococcus cryptus, has been increasingly damaging citrus, particularly those plants grown in plastic greenhouses. This study was conducted to monitor the seasonal phenology of adult male cryptic mealybugs and to determine the timing for control using a sex pheromone trap. Adult males responded to a synthetic sex pheromone and trap color. An increasing number of males were attracted to the traps with increasing concentrations of sex pheromone up to 5 mg. The males occurred annually four times and had three cohorts at a time due to different overwintering developmental stages. After overwintering the adult males began to in mid-late April. A positive correlation was observed between the number of adult males caught in traps and the mean density per twig of all motile stages except first stage nymphs of the cryptic mealybugs. The peak time for the first nymph to occur was estimated from the maximum attraction time of the males, and the cumulative degree days (DD) was 350 DD, similar with the preoviposition period.

  • The objective of this study is to investigate the effect of elevated $CO_2$ and temperature on the phenology and reproductive ecological characteristics of Bupleurum latissimum. We measured characteristics of 4-year-old B. latissimum grown under control (ambient $CO_2$+ambient temperature, 340~370 ppm) and treatment (elevated $CO_2$+elevated temperature, 690~770 ppm) conditions in a glass house. The period of flowering, fruit appearance and fruit maturing was earlier by 4, 1, 2 days, respectively, under elevated $CO_2$ and temperature. The comparative weight of a single ripe fruit, all ripe fruits and total ripe and unripe fruits was higher per control than treated plants. However the other characteristics, such as no. of peduncle, matured fruits, total fruits per plant and fruit setting rate per plant of B. latissimum were not significantly affected by elevated $CO_2$ and temperature. The germination rate of B. latissimum was higher in control than in treatment plants. These results showed that the phenology of B. latissimuin might be well suited to an earlier growing season, and the response of reproductive characteristics of B. latissimuin is negatively influenced by global warming.

  • This study was conducted to investigate the climatic factors affecting bud phenology of Pinus densiflora provenances. Data were collected from Jungseon, Chungju and Jeju plantations which were parts of the 11 provenance trials established by Korea Forest Research Institute in 1996. The 36 provenances were included in this trial ($33^{\circ}30^{\prime}{\sim}38^{\circ}08^{\prime}$ in latitude and $126^{\circ}30^{\prime}{\sim}129^{\circ}20^{\prime}$ in longitude). The bud swelling date and bud burst date of the provenances were investigated from March to May in 2004 in two-day interval. The four geographic factors and fifteen climatic factors of the test sites and provenances were considered in this study. Canonical correlation analysis was conducted to examine the major factors affecting the bud phenology. Our results suggested that the major factors affecting the timing of bud swelling and burst are the differences in latitude, longitude, extremely low temperature (during December-February), extremely high temperature (during November-February) and annual mean growing days between test plantation and provenance. The provenances with lower winter temperature than that of plantation showed the faster bud swelling and bud burst. Based on these results, the implication on the seed transfer of P. densiflora was discussed.

  • Reproductive phenology and physiological responses of Epilobium hirsutum L. to moisture content and nutrient content of soil were analysed in order to obtain basic data for effective conservation and restoration. Epilobium hirsutum L. is a perennial plant. But Epilobium hirsutum L. grew reproductively in all moisture and nutrient gradients. Flower bud, flowers and peduncle were respectively ripened in earlier under highest moisture condition and highest nutrient condition. And, number of flowers and peduncle were more quickly increased under highest moisture condition and highest nutrient condition. Chlorophyll content was high under highest moisture condition and higher middle moisture condition. However, we found no significant difference of chlorophyll content regard to nutrient gradients. There was no difference in minimum chlorophyll fluorescence among all moisture and nutrient gradients. The photochemical efficiency values of PS II were 0.75 in all moisture gradients, and it was 0.78 in highest nutrient gradient. The chlorophyll content of Epilobium hirsutum L. increased as the moisture content increased, and the Fv/Fm value increased as the organic matter increased. Our results showed that high moisture and nutrient content of soil advance their breeding season and promote reproductive growth. It might be important basic informations for the maintenance of population and the management of habitat of Epilobium hirsutum L. an endangered plant species.

  • Many researches have shown that NDVI provides a potential methods to derive meaningful metrics that describe ecosystem functions. In this paper we investigated the use of the MODIS NDVI (Normalized Difference Vegetation Index) to monitor vegetation phenology dynamics of Northern plateau region, North Korea, during last 9-years (2000~2008). The findings of this paper can be summarized as follows. First, the length of growing season ranged from a low of 128 days in 2003 to a high of 176 days in 2000 and 2005. On the average of the last 9 years, the highest NDVI of 0.86 was marked on 28 July. Greenup onset occurs at the start of May, while the senescence begins between late September and October. Second, these annual vegetation cycles were compared with Seorak and Jiri Mountain regions of South Korea which have similar vegetation condition. Greenup onsets in South Korea were observed earlier than those of North Korea and the average time lag between the South and North Korea in Greenup was about 16 days which is a time-resolution of remotely sensed data. Sub-alpine conifers of such areas may be severely affected by the large of phenological characteristics due to the global warming trend.

  • Phenology determines the timing of crop development, and the timing of phenological events is strongly influenced by the temperature during the growing season. In process-based model, leaf area is simulated dynamically by coupling of morphology and phenology module. Therefore, the prediction of leaf appearance rate and final leaf number affects the performance of whole crop model. The dataset for the model equation was collected from SPA R chambers with five different temperature treatments. Beta distribution function (proposed by Yan and Hunt (1999)) was used for describing the leaf appearance rate as a function of temperature. The optimum temperature and the critical value were estimated to be 26.0℃ and 35.3℃, respectively. For evaluation of the model, the accumulated number of onion leaves observed in a temperature gradient chamber was compared with model estimates. The model estimate is the result of accumulating the daily increase in the number of onion leaves obtained by inputting the daily mean temperature during the growing season into the temperature model. In this study, the coefficient of determination (R2) and RMSE value of the model were 0.95 and 0.89, respectively.
