Ethyl formate (EF) is a rapid kill, environmentally safe, and low mammalian toxicity fumigant, registered to disinfest quarantine insect pests from imported agricultural products. A new concept for controlling insect pests of agricultural crops was tested in a fumigation chamber with EF. Control efficacy of and phyto-toxicity due to EF fumigation were evaluated against four pests (Thrips palmi, Bemisia tabaci, Myzus persicae, and Tetranychus urticae) and on seedlings of four fruit vegetables (FVs; yellow melon, cucumber, tomato, and pepper). Ethyl formate fumigation at a dose of 1.5 g m-3 for 12 h produced >93.3% mortality in T. palmi, B. tabaci, and M. persicae. However, T. urticae was tolerant to fumigation, showing only 20% mortality at 2.0 g m-3. In terms of concentration × time (CT) products, at least 8.9 g·h m-3 CT at 20 ± 1.5℃ was needed to achieve > 90% mortality against the three susceptible insect pests. Fumigation at 1.5 g m-3 for 12 h caused no phyto-toxicity to any of the four FV seedlings. Ethyl formate application, as a new disinfestation method in greenhouses, could be an alternative to reduce the use of conventional insecticides. However, further studies are needed to determine the efficacy of this method at different pest developmental stages and in different greenhouse environments. Additionally, research is needed to elucidate the phyto-toxicity of EF application at different growing stages of a wide variety of crops.
In this study, 5 species (Tetranychus kanzawai Kishida, Endoclyta excrescens (Butler), leaf roller caterpillar (Adoxophyes orana Fisher), Anomis mesogona (Walker), and Aulacaspis rosae (Bouche)) were found in Rubus coreanus Miquel in Jeonbuk province, from 2006 to 2008. T. kanzawai appeared in mid-May and showed three peaks in late June, mid-July, and late August. Its density was over 10 adults per leaf. A. mesogona appeared in mid-June and showed two peaks in late July, and early October. Of the 28 insect pests in pre-harvesting, the 7 main species were T. kanzawai, T. urticae, A. orana, Lygocoris lucorum Meyer, Frankliniella intonsa (Trybom), Psylliodes punctifrons Baly and Motschulskyia serrata (Matsumura). Of the 19 insect pests in after-harvesting, the 6 main species were T. kanzawai, E. excrescens, A. mesogona, A. orana, P. punctifrons and A. rosae. Growth of R. coreanus decreased when insect pests were not managed and yields decreased approx. 7% a year. Management of insect pests in field using pesticide was not different.
Lysin motif (LysM) proteins are reported to be necessary for the virulence and immune response suppression in many herbaceous plant pathogens, while far less is documented in woody plant pathogens. In this study, we preliminarily characterized the molecular function of a LysM protein LtLysM1 in woody plant pathogen Lasiodiplodia theobromae. Transcriptional profiles revealed that LtLysM1 is highly expressed at infectious stages, especially at 36 and 48 hours post inoculation. Amino acid sequence analyses revealed that LtLysM1 was a putative glycoprotein with 10 predicted N-glycosylation sites and one LysM domain. Pathogenicity tests showed that overexpressed transformants of LtLysM1 displayed increased virulence on grapevine shoots in comparison with that of wild type CSS-01s, and RNAi transformants of LtLysM1 exhibited significantly decreased lesion length when compared with that of wild type CSS-01s. Moreover, LtLysM1 was confirmed to be a secreted protein by a yeast signal peptide trap assay. Transient expression in Nicotiana benthamiana together with protein immunoblotting confirmed that LtLysM1 was an N-glycosylated protein. In contrast to previously reported LysM protein Slp1 and OsCEBiP, LtLysM1 molecule did not interact with itself based on yeast two hybrid and co-immunoprecipitation assays. These results indicate that LtLysM1 is a secreted protein and functions as a critical virulence factor during the disease symptom development in woody plants.
The effect ground-cover weeds on the occurrence of apple pests and their natural enemies was studied in an apple orchard in Ahnsung, Kyung-gi do during seasons of 1993 and 1994. The major apple pests and their parasitoids and predators were surveyed on the apple tree canopy in tow experimental plots; a weed-free lot where all weeds were removed by herbicide treatment, and a mowed plot where weeds were allowed restrictly by cutting with an asickle. Also, a sweep net sampling was taken from ground-cover weeds in the mowed plot. There were no significant differences in the abundance of mite and aphids between two plots, although mite densities tend to be lower in the mowed plot. The apple leaf miner, Phyllonorycter ringoniella, was significantly fewer in the mowed plot,. The densities of natural enemies of mites and aphids were slightly higher in the mowed plot. The parasitism of apple leaf miner in the mowed plot was 6~10% and 20~25% higher than that in the weed-free plot in 1993 and 994, respectively. Several natural enemies such as Apanteles kuwayamai (Braconidae), Orius sauteri (Anthocoridae), Chrysopa sp. (Chrysopidae), coccinellidae, and Eulophidae were collected both from weeds and the apple trees, However, potential apple pests were not observed on weeds. The development of insect community on the apple tree canopy was restricted by the pesticide spray on apple trees, while the insect community on weeds was maintained without significant destruction by pesticides spray on apple trees. Consequentely, the ground-cover weeds under apple trees affected occurrences of apple pests and their natural enemies in apple trees. te specialist natural enemies such as apple leaf miner's parasitoids dispersed from weeds to the apple canopy and affected apple leaf miner density significantly. However, generalist predators that have preys available on weeds stayed on weeds, hence their control effects for mites and aphids on the apple canopy were low.
Life history of Ivela auripes (Lepidoptera: Lymantriidae), a pest of Cornus controversa, was investigated both in laboratory and field condition. At $24{\pm}1^{\circ}C$, developmental period from larvae to adult and adult life span was $26.3{\pm}0.3$ and $4.4{\pm}0.2$ days, respectively. Developmental period of pupae reared in the laboratory was not significantly different from those collected in the field. Female moths reared in the laboratory laid significantly less eggs than those emerged from the pupae collected in the field. Light trap catches was less effective than direct monitoring in the field. The two monitoring results showed that adult moth emerged from early June to late June, and the time of 50% cumulative emergence was 17 June.
Locust gall midge (LGM), Obolodiplosis robiniae (Haldeman) (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), is a cecidomyiid insect forming roll-up galls on leaves of Robinia pseudoacacia Linnaeus (Fabaceae). LGM, known as native to North America, was reported from Korea and Japan in 2002. LGM was observed weekly or biweekly to clarify their voltinism and distribution within the crown of the host tree in two sites of Osan and Siheung in Korea from May to August, 2007. Density of LGM was investigated based on the number of larvae per leaf. Two generations of LGM were observed in Siheung site whereas three generations in Osan site during the present study. The result indicated that LGM had at maximum three generations per year. The density of LGM in Osan was higher in the upper crown of the host trees than middle or lower part. In Siheung, LGMs were distributed more on the exterior of the lower crown than the interior. The average number of larvae per gall was $3.3{\pm}0.1$ and $2.8{\pm}0.1$ individuals per leaf in Osan and Siheung, respectively.
This study was conducted to investigate the effect of parasititoids on the density-fluctuation of the pine needle gall midge, Thecodiplosis japonensis. The density of T. japonensis and its parasitoids was observed by emergence trap in pine forest in Namsung-dong, Keumho-eup, Youngcheon-shi, Kyeongsangbuk-do, Korea, from 1986 to 2005. After 1987, density fluctuations of adults pine needle gall midge and its parasitoids showed similar trends and density of parasitoids was dependent on density of host population. Sex ratio of the pine needle gall midge, T. japonensis, was female-biased and had some variations in according to years. These trends were similar to those of parasitoid populations and sex ratio of Inostemma seoulis was more female-biased than that of I. matsutama. T. japonensis adults emerged in the field from May 16 to July 27 and the peak of emergence was between late May and early June. The adults of Inostemma matsutama emerged from May 16 to June 11 (peak between late May and early June), whereas those of Inostemma seoulis emerged from June 9 to July 27 (peak: late June).

Current status on the occurrence and the management of the major disease, insect and mite pests were investigated in the organic or non-chemical pest control orchards from 2005 to 2009. Numbers of certified organic or non-chemical apple orchards were increased from 14 in 2005 to 78 in 2008. Severe damages on leaves and fruits occurred by the several diseases such as marssonina blotch, bitter rot, white rot, sooty blotch and flyspeck, and the several insect pests such as apple leaf-curling aphid, woolly apple aphid, oriental fruit moth and peach fruit moth on the almost certified organic or non-chemical pest control orchards. About 10 and 18 environmental-friendly materials were used to control diseases and insect or mite pests respectively. But, lime sulfur and bordeaux mixture to diseases and machine oil, plant oil mixed with egg yolk, and pheromone mating disruptions to insect pests were effective to control under the adequate conditions. At present, it is extremely difficult to produce organic apples in Korea. Growers must consider about and solve so many conditions on the cultivar, weather, local site, marketing and so on, before when they decide to change from conventional or IPM(Integrated Pest Management) to organic or non-chemical pest control orchards.
We investigated the occurrence pattern of diseases and insect pests and disease control efficacy of organic materials against watermelon powdery mildew in small type watermelon in Eumseong, Chungcheongbuk-do, 2015. The result of this study, the small type watermelon was damaged by diseases and pests such as Didymella bryoniae, Podosphaera xanthii, Aphis gossypii, Tetranychus urticae, thrips, Spodoptera exigua and Spodoptera litura. Among them, the occurrence of P. xanthii, T. urticae and thrips was high. Diseased leaf rate by P. xanthii, a casual agent of powdery mildew, was 27~99.3% in three small type watermelon cultivars in the middle of June. The number of T. urticae per leaf was high from 79.9 to 111 in three small type watermelon cultivars in the middle of June. It showed high number of thrips captured by yellow and blue sticky trap. Highest numbers of yellow sticky trap (407) and of blue sticky trap (774) were detected in the middle and first of June, respectively. The disease control efficacy of mayonnaise, oleic acid and three organic materials against powdery mildew of small type watermelon in fields was evaluated. As thre results, the symptoms of plant disease were effectively reduced by over 60% in the treatments of materials such as sodium bicarbonate 80%, mayonnaise and the extract of Rheum palmatum 1%. The highest control efficacy was 83% in the treatment of sodium bicarbonate 80%. From this study, we had a information of the occurrence pattern of diseases and insect pests in small type watermelon and the treatment of material containing sodium bicarbonate 80% was very effective for controlling against powdery mildew.

The number of winter buds oviposited by Drycosmus kuriphilus against chestnut varieties was lower of Ishizuchi and Daap than that of Okkwang, Tsukuba and Arima. D. kuriphilus oviposited multiful eggs in each winter bud of most of the chestnut varieties tested. More than three eggs were oviposited on winter bud of lower shoot of native, Tsukuba, Okkwang and Pyounggi varieties. However, average laid eggs less than one were on winter buds of Tshizuchi and Daap. Number of eggs oviposited in winter bud on lower shoot was higher than those on upper one. More than 15 eggs were oviposited in Tsukuba, whereas one or less egg was oviposited in Daap. Rates of winter buds oviposited by D. kuriphilus in native, Arima and Tsukuba were 83.8, 78.5, and $75.9\%$, respectively.
