  • Al-laminated packaging film incorporating ascorbic acid or tocopherol at inner food contact layer was tested in the potential to improve antioxidative preservation of powdered infant formula under CO2-enriched atmosphere. Product of 200 g was packaged with the packaging film containing 0.3% antioxidant in sealant layer of low density polyethylene and stored at 30℃ for 286 days with periodic measurement of package atmosphere and product's quality attributes. The CO2-flushed package resulted in shrinkage of tight contact between the product and the film not allowing gas sampling of package atmosphere after 140 days. Package of tocopherol-incorporated film allowed some ingress of oxygen after 112 days presumably due to its weakening of heat-seal area. The increased oxygen concentration in the tocopherol-added film package led to the concomitant increase of peroxide value, an index of lipid oxidation. On the other hand, packaging of ascorbic acid-added film pouch could suppress lipid oxidation marginally in consistent manner compared to control package without any antioxidant.

  • The dynamic instability analysis of delaminated composite structures subjected to in-plane pulsating forces is carried out based on the higher order shell theory of Sanders. In the finite element (FE) formulation, the seven degrees of freedom per each node are used with transformations in order to fit the displacement continuity conditions at the delamination region. The boundaries of the instability regions are determined using the method proposed by Bolotin. The numerical results obtained for skew plates and shells are in good agreement with those reported by other investigators. The new results for delaminated skew plate and shell structures in this study mainly show the effect of the interactions between the radius-length ratio and other various parameters, for example, skew angles, delamination size, the fiber angle of layer and location of delamination in the layer direction. The effect of the magnitude of the periodic in-plane load on the instability regions is also investigated.

  • We demonstrate the blue InGaN/GaN multiple quantum wells light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with an embedded air-gap photonic crystal (PC) which was fabricated by the lateral epitaxial overgrowth of GaN layer on the tungsten (W) nano-masks. The periodic air-gap PC was formed by the chemical reaction of hydrogen with GaN on the W nano-mask. The optical output power of LEDs with an air-gap PC was increased by 26% compared to LEDs without an air-gap PC. The enhanced optical output power was attributed to the improvement in internal quantum efficiency and light extraction efficiency by the air-gap PC embedded in GaN layer.

  • The phase field model is becoming the model of choice for the theoretical study of the morphologies of crystals growth from the melt. This model provides an alternative approach to the solution of the classical (sharp interface) model of solidification by introducing a new variable, the phase field, Ø, to identify the phase. The variable Ø takes on constant values in the bulk phases and makes a continuous transition between these values over a thin transition layer that plays the role of the classically sharp interface. This results in Ø being governed by a new partial differential equation(in addition to the PDE's that govern the classical fields, such as temperature and composition) that guarantees (in the asymptotic limit of a suitably thin transition layer) that the appropriate boundary conditions at the crystal-melt interface are satisfied. Thus, one can proceed to solve coupled PDE's without the necessity of explicitly tracking the interface (free boundary) that would be necessary to solve the classical (sharp interface) model. Recent advances in supercomputing and algorithms now enable generation of interesting and valuable results that display most of the fundamental solidification phenomena and processes that are observed experimentally. These include morphological instability, solute trapping, cellular growth, dendritic growth (with anisotropic sidebranching, tip splitting, and coupling to periodic forcing), coarsening, recalescence, eutectic growth, faceting, and texture development. This talk will focus on the fundamental basis of the phase field model in terms of irreversible thermodynamics as well as it computational limitations and prognosis for future improvement. • The hydrodynamic instability of the three-dimensional boundary layer on a rotating disk introduces a periodic modulation of the mean flow in the form of stationary cross flow vortices. Detailed numerical values of the growth rates, neutral curves and other characteristics have been calculated for the Type II-instabilities. Presented are the neutral stability results concerning the two instability modes by solving new linear stability equations reformulated not only by considering whole convective terms but by correcting some errors in the previous stability equations. The present stability results are agree with the previously known ones within reasonable limit. The spatial amplification contours have been calculated for the moving disturbance wave, whose azimuth angle is between $\varepsilon=-10^{\circ}$ and $-20^{\circ}$. The transition flow of the moving disturbance wave will be developed at $\varepsilon=-15^{\circ}$ and Re=352 corresponding at the growth rates n = 5.8 from the spatial amplification contours.

  • Subsurface Internal Waves (IWs) can be detected in satellite images as periodic alternating brighter/darker stripes. It is known that there are two types of IWs - depression type and elevation type - depending on the water depth in stratified oceans. In this study, we have quantitatively verified the process of converting polarity from depression waves to elevation waves using ERS-2 SAR images acquired over the northern South China Sea. We simulated the evolution of IWs near a turning point with a numerical model for internal wave propagation. The simulation results near the turning point clearly showed us not only a conversion process of IWs from depression to elevation waves, but also a similar wave pattern with the observed SAR image. We also simulated SAR intensity variation near the turning point. The upper layer currents were computed at regular intervals using the numerical model, as the IWs were passing through the turning point. Then, an integrated hydrodynamic-electromagnetic model was used for simulating SAR intensity profiles from the upper layer currents at each position. The simulated SAR intensity profiles at each position were compared with the observed SAR intensities.

  • A single layer ultrafiltration(UF) ceramic membrane was prepared using boehmite sol. Boehmite was synthesized using a typical sol-gel process with optimization of the viscosity, pH, molar ratio of aluminum isopropoxide(AIP) and $HNO_3$. Boehmite sol was coated on a microfiltration(MF) support using the dip-coating method. MF support was dipped into the boehmite sol with a withdrawal speed of 5 mm/s and was maintained for 10 s in the boehmite sol, resulting in a uniform UF membrane layer of $10{\mu}m$ thickness. The porosity of the obtained membrane was measured and found to be 41.2%; the pore size was found to range from 80~100 nm, corresponding to the pore size of the UF membrane. The flux of the obtained membrane was initially 540 $L/m^2h$ and approximately 85% of the initial flux was recovered using a periodic back-flushing process.

  • Periodic pulsations in the static pressure near turbine surfaces as blade rows move relative to each other is one of the important sources of turbine unsteadiness. The present experiment aims to investigate the effect of the static pressure pulsations on the interaction of film coolant flows from two rows of staggered holes with mainstream and its effect on film cooling heat transfer. Potential flow pulsations are generated by the rotating shutter mechanism installed downstream of the test section, The free-stream Strouhal number based on the boundary layer thickness is in the range of 0.033 - 0.33, and the amplitude of about 10-20%. Measured are time-averaged and phase-averaged velocity variations, pressure variations and temperature distributions of the flow field. Experimental conditions are identified by boundary layer measurements. Injectant behavior is characterized by the measurements of unsteady pressure in the plenum chamber and free-stream static pressure. The film cooling effectiveness is evaluated from the insulated wall temperature measurement. It has been found that bulk flow pulsation provides very large diffusion of the injectants and the effectiveness is significantly reduced by the flow pulsations.
