A process monitoring procedure using a correlated variable is presented when a lower specification limit is given on the performance variable. Every item is inspected with a variable correlated with the performance variable. When an item is rejected in the screening inspection, the process is checked for change using the mean and variance of measurements of the correlated variable for n preceding items including the rejected one. The performance variable is assumed to be normally distributed. A linear relationship between the performance and surrogate variables is assumed with normally distributed error term. The monitoring procedure is designed so that the prespecified outgoing quality can be attained.

In this paper, a discrete-time variable structure control method using recursively defined switching function and a decoupled variable structure disturbance compensator is used to achieve high performance circular motion control of a CNC machining center. The discrete-time variable structure control with the decoupled disturbance compensator method developed in this paper uses a recursive switching function defined as the sum of the current tracking error vector and the previous value of the switching function multiplied by a positive constant less than one. This recursive switching function provides much improved performance compared to the method that uses a switching function defined only as a linear combination of the current tracking error. Enhancements in tracking performance are demonstrated in the circular motion control using a CNC milling machine.
This paper considers the problem of determining the optimal process mean and screening specification limits of a surrogate variable associated with product quality under two-stage screening procedure. In two-stage screening, the surrogate variable is inspected first to decide whether an item should be accepted, rejected or additional observations should be taken. If additional observations are required, the performance variable of interest is then observed to classify the undecided items. Assuming that the performance variable and the surrogate variable are jointly normally distributed, the optimal process mean and the screening limits are obtained by maximizing the expected profit which includes selling price, production, reprocessing, inspection and penalty costs. A numerical example is presented and numerical studies are performed to compare the proposed two-stage screening procedure with single-stage screening procedures.
Pumps are widely used in industrial plants, energy systems, ships etc. Generally they consume nearly 20% each nation's total electrical energy. The objective of this study is to find performance evaluating method for variable-speed drive pump. In order to evaluate the variable-speed pump performance energy saving rate for the variable-speed pump is applied and compared with that of constant-speed pump.

When the nature of measuring a performance variable is destructive or very expensive, it is attractive to use a surrogate variable which is highly correlated with the performance variable and less expensive to measure. In this paper, we propose rectifying screening procedures using the performance and surrogate variables. Two screening procedures are considered; a statistically-based screening procedure to reduce the current proportion of nonconforming items to a specified lower value after screening, and a economically-based screening procedure where the screening limit is determined so that the expected cost is minimized. It is assumed that the surrogate variable given the performance variable is normally distributed with known mean and standard deviation. For two screening procedures, methods of finding the optimal solutions are presented and numerical examples are also given.

An economic two-stage screening procedure is presented when both lower and upper specification limits are given on the performance variable. A screening variable which is highly correlated with the performance variable is used first to decide whether an item should be accepted, rejected, or undecided. The performance variable is then used to classify the undecided items. The two variables are assumed to be jointly normally distributed. A cost model is constructed on the basis of six cost components; inspection costs of screening and performance variables and costs caused by type I and type II misclassification errors related with lower and upper specification limits. Optimal cutoff values on the screening variable are determined so that the average outgoing quality exceeds a prespecified level. Solution methods are provided for both known-parameter and unknown-parameter cases.
Purpose: We provide a condition-based maintenance policy where a surrogate variable is used for monitoring system performance. We constructed a risk function by taking into account the risk and losses accompanied with erroneous decisions. Methods: Assuming a unique degradation process for the performance variable and its specific relationship with the surrogate variable, the maintenance policy is determined. A risk function is developed on the basis of producer's and consumer's risks accompanied with each decision. With a strategic safety factor considered, the optimal threshold value for the surrogate variable is determined based on the risk function. Results: The condition-based maintenance is analyzed from the point of risk. With an assumed safety consideration, the optimal threshold value of the surrogate variable is provided for taking a maintenance action. The optimal solution cannot be obtained in a closed form. An illustrative numerical example and solution is provided with a source code of R program. Conclusion: The study can be applied to situation where a sensor signal is issued if the system performance begins to degrade gradually and reaches eventually its functional failure. The study can be extended to the case where two or more performance variables are connected to a same surrogate variable. Also estimation of the distribution parameters and risk coefficients should be further studied.

The present study is aimed to develop an integrated performance analysis approach for the application of a compressor with variable inlet guide vane (VIGV) and vairable stator vane (VSV) in a small turbofan engine. For the integrated analysis approach, an engine performance analysis program, NPSS and a computer program used for predicting of axial flow compressor performance based on stage stacking method, STGSTK were linked with an optimisation package, Isight. This enables off-design performance analysis for the turbofan engine with VIGV and VSV hence provides the capability to predict stable operation condition of the engine with acceptable surge margin.
This paper presents a proposed position controller for a vector controlled induction motor. The position controller design depends on the rotational motion equations and a classical speed controller (CSC) performance. The CSC is designed to have the ability to track variable reference inputs and to provide a predefined system performance. Standard position controller in industry is presented to analyze its performance and its drawbacks. Then the proposed position controller is designed, based on the well defined rotational motion equations. The proposed position controller and the CSC are applied to control the position and speed of the vector controlled induction motor with different ratings. Simulation results at different operating conditions are presented to evaluate the proposed controllers' performance. The results show that the CSC can drive the motor with a predefined speed performance and can track a variable reference speed with an approximately zero steady state error. The results also show that the proposed position controller has the ability to effect high-precision positioning in a limited time and to track a variable reference position with a zero steady state error.
A screening procedure, where one or more correlated variables are used for screeing, is reviewed from the point of statistical hypothesis testing. Without assuming a specific probability model for the joint distribution of the performance and screening variables, some principles are provided to establish the best screeing region. A, pp.ication examples are provided for two cases; ⅰ) the case where the performance variable is dichotomous and ⅱ) the case where the performance variable is continuous. In case ⅰ), a normal model is assumed for the conditional distribution of the screening variable given the performance variable. In case ⅱ), the performance and screening variables are assumed to be jointly normally distributed.
