Comparison of Seed Germinating Vigor, Early Germination Characteristics, Germination Speed and Germination Peak Time in New Varieties of The Third Generation of Creeping Bentgrass Under Different Growing Conditions (생육환경에 따른 제3세대 크리핑 벤트그래스 신품종의 종자 발아력, 초기 발아 특성, 발아세 및 발아 피크 기간 비교)

  • Research was initiated to investigate germination characteristics of creeping bentgrass (CB, Agrostis palustris Huds.). Seven varieties of CB were evaluated with different experiments. An alternative environment condition requiring for a CB germination test by International Seed Testing Association (ISTA) was applied in the Experiment I, consisting of 8-hr light at $25^{\circ}C$ and 16-hr dark at $15^{\circ}C$(ISTA conditions). Experiment II was conducted under a room temperature condition of 5 to $25^{\circ}C$(natural conditions). In each experiment, data such as seed germinating vigor, early germination characteristics, germination speed and germination peak time were measured. Significant differences were observed in seed germinating vigor, early germination characteristics, germination speed and germination peak time. Seed germinating vigor was variable with different environments and varieties. It was 61.50 to 98.25% under ISTA conditions and 55.00 to 98.50% under natural conditions. There were considerable variations in early germination characteristics among CB varieties according to different conditions. Early germination characteristics indicated that all varieties were 1 to 4 days faster in germination under ISTA conditions, when compared with natural conditions. The germination speed, measured as days to seed germination of 70% and 90%, was much faster with Penn A-1, Penn A-4 and Penncross under ISTA conditions. But it was even faster with L-93 and Penncross when grown under natural conditions. Differences were also observed in germination peak time with varieties and growing conditions. It was 0.57 to 2.86 days under ISTA conditions and 0.74 to 1.74 days under natural conditions. Regardless of the environment conditions, the shortest variety was L-93 and the longest one T-1. Considering germinating vigor, early germination characteristics, germination speed and germination peak time, Penn A-1, Penn A-4 and Penncross were regarded as excellent varieties under ISTA conditions in terms of early establishment characteristics, while L-93, Penn A-1 and Penncross under natural conditions. These results suggest that an intensive germination test be needed prior to planting, for the early germinating vigor, germination speed and germination peak time. Also, a proper variety selection and comprehensive site analysis for the growing environmental conditions should be done before golf course construction.

Comparison of Spring Growth Characteristics of Creeping Bentgrass(Agrogtis palustris Huds.) Cultivars (봄철 크리핑 벤트그래스의 품종별 특성비교)

  • This study was initiated to evaluate the growth characteristics of creeping bentgrass cultivars during the sprlng season. The green-up of 'CY' and 'T-1' were about 2 weeks earlier than the other cultivars followed by 'Penn A' 'Crenshaw', 'L> 'Penncross' > 'Putter' > 'Dominant' > 'SR1020' in that order. 'T-1' and 'CY-2' had the highest chlorophyll content while 'Penncross' had the lowest during the spring. 'Crenshaw' and 'Penn A-4' showed the highest shoot density in this research, followed by 'CY-2', 'L-93', 'T-1', 'Putter', 'Dominant', 'SR1020', and 'Penncross' in that order. In case of root length, 'CY-2' and 'L-93' were the best cultivars, but 'Penncross' was worst during the spring. 'CY-2' had the best visual quality among the cultivars, 'T-1' and 'Crenshaw' also classified as high visual quality group whereas 'SR1020', 'Dominant' and 'Penncross' were grouped in relatively low quality. In conclusion, 'CY-2', 'T-1' and 'Crenshaw' were the best cultivars in terms of growth characteristics in spring. Conversely, 'SR1020' and 'Penncross' were the poorest cultivars. These results can be more useful for management or constructing of golf courses. However, this research was performed with little compaction stress. More information is needed on the tolerance to compaction stress of these bentgrass cultivars.

Analysis of Genetic Diversity in Thirteen Turfgrass Cultivars Cultivated at Golf Courses Using RAPD Markers (RAPD마커를 이용한 국내골프장의 잔디 13 품종의 유전적 다양성 분석)

  • This study was carried our to examine the genetic relationship of 13 commercial turfgrass cultivars using Random Amplified Polymorphic DNA to provide genetic informations more efficient golf course management. Analysis of 56 random hexamer primers generated 13 to 54 polymorphic bands among the 13 cultivars with an average of 30.7 bands per primer. The results of cluster analysis based on RAPDs revealed that three major variety groups: Group I - 'Shadow II', 'Aurora Gold', 'Little Bighorn Blue', 'PennA-1', and 'PennA-4'; Group II - 'Midnight II', 'Prosperity', 'Moon light SLT', 'Bright star SLT', and 'Silver dollar'; and Group III - 'Olympic Gold', 'Silver Star', and 'Tar Heel II'. The genetic similarity coefficients among 13 turfgrass cultivars ranged from 0.039 to 1.0 with highest coefficient in Group III. Studies on morphological characters and the effective molecular markers such as sequence characterized amplified regions are further needed to identify relationships and genetic diversities within species and among species.

  • Derived from the juxtapositional model of Comparative Literature, this article analyzes two movies, The Story of Pao (Chuyện của Pao, directed by Ngô Quang Hải) and Into the Wild (directed by Sean Penn), using eco-criticism and focusing on two specific aspects: looking for the relationship between "culture" and "nature" and questioning the ideology that puts people at the center of the natural world. Specifically, the article points out similar tones in discovering and praising the beauty of nature, and at the same time, focuses on explaining the "disagreement" and "harmony" in behaviors of different communities towards Mother Nature in these two films. Finally, The Story of Pao and Into the Wild are both read as discourses that participate in the repositioning of human beings in the natural world. The purpose of juxtaposition, therefore, is to seek a new existential dimension for the works, providing an opportunity to uncover and reveal hidden layers of meaning of each text.

Computational Challenges for Integrative Genomics

  • Integrated genomics refers to the use of large-scale, systematically collected data from various sources to address biological and biomedical problems. A critical ingredient to a successful research program in integrated genomics is the establishment of an effective computational infrastructure. In this review, we suggest that the computational infrastructure challenges include developing tools for heterogeneous data organization and access, innovating techniques for combining the results of different analyses, and establishing a theoretical framework for integrating biological and quantitative models. For each of the three areas - data integration, analyses integration, and model integration - we review some of the current progress and suggest new topics of research. We argue that the primary computational challenges lie in developing sound theoretical foundations for understanding the genome rather than simply the development of algorithms and programs.

Prediction of seismic cracking capacity of glazing systems

  • This research formulates a closed-form equation to predict a glass panel cracking failure drift for several curtain wall and storefront systems. An evaluation of the ASCE 7-10 equation for Dclear, which is the drift corresponding to glass-to-frame contact, shows that the kinematic modeling assumed for formulation of the equation is sound. The equation proposed in this paper builds on the ASCE equation and offers a revision of that equation to predict drift corresponding to cracking failure by considering glazing characteristics such as glass type, glass panel configuration, and system type. The formulation of the proposed equation and corresponding analyses with the ASCE equation is based on compiled experimental data of twenty-two different glass systems configurations tested over the past decade. A final comparative analysis between the ASCE equation and the proposed equation shows that the latter can predict the drift corresponding to glass cracking failure more accurately.

Exploratory and Confirmatory Factor Analysis of the Korean version of the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (한글판 펜실베니아 걱정 질문지의 탐색적 및 확인적 요인 분석)

  • Objective : This study evaluated the factor structure of a Korean version of the Penn State Worry Questionnaire (K-PSWQ) with exploratory factor analysis in healthy adult subjects, and confirmatory factor analysis of subjects who have received psychiatric treatment. Methods : Exploratory principal component analysis was conducted with data from 318 non-psychiatric subjects, and 118 psychiatric patients were subjected to confirmatory factor analysis (maximum likelihood estimation). Participants were voluntary visitors at the booth who agreed to undergo screening for anxiety disorder at 2013 & 2014 Korea Mental Health Exhibitions. Results : Exploratory analysis revealed a two factor structure of the scale with total variance of 56.3%. Factor 1 was considered 'Worry engagement', and factor 2 was considered 'Absence of worry'. However, the results of the confirmatory factor analysis supported that both one factor model with method factor and two factor model are fit to structure of the scale considering fit indices. Internal consistency of total questions was good (Cronbach's ${\alpha}=0.899$). Conclusion : Our results supported the previously suggested factor structure of the PSWQ, and proved factorial validity of the K-PSWQ in both populations.

Virtual World-Based Information Security Learning: Design and Evaluation

  • There has been a growing interest and enthusiasm for the application of virtual worlds in learning and training. This research proposes a design framework of a virtual world-based learning environment that integrates two unique features of the virtual world technology, immersion and interactivity, with an instructional strategy that promotes self-regulatory learning. We demonstrate the usefulness and assess the effectiveness of our design in the context of information security learning. In particular, the information security learning module implemented in Second Life was incorporated into an Introduction to Information Security course. Data from pre- and post- learning surveys were used to evaluate the effectiveness of the learning module. Overall, the results strongly suggest that the virtual world-based learning environment enhances information security learning, thus supporting the effectiveness of the proposed design framework. Additional results suggest that learner traits have an important influence on learning outcomes through perceived enjoyment. The study offers useful design and implementation guidelines for organizations and universities to develop a virtual world-based learning environment. It also represents an initial step towards the design and explanation theories of virtual world-based learning environments.

  • Let pa,b,m(n) be the number of integer partitions of n with more parts congruent to a modulo m than parts congruent to b modulo m. We prove that pa,b,m(n) ≥ pb,a,m(n) whenever 1 ≤ a < b ≤ m. We also propose some conjectures concerning series with nonnegative coefficients in their expansions.

Development of SCAR markers in Creeping bentgrass(Agrostis palustrics Huds.) cultivars (Creeping bentgrass(Agrostis palustrics Huds.) 품종별 SCAR markers 개발)

  • Creeping bentgrass (Agrostis palustrics Huds.) is cool season turfgrasse that is used for putting green in golf course. Creeping bentgrass cultivars are difficult to distinguish with the same species because of similar morphological characters and low level of genetic diversity. The SCAR markers using the specific DNA can be useful for differentiating between creeping bentgrass cultivars. Five RAPD primers were used for specific band detection among creeping bentgrass cultivars, penncross, penn A-4, crenshaw, L-93, CY-2, T-1. The pairs of SCAR primers for six cultivers were designed by the specific sequences of the bands that amplified by RAPD. Three of the six SCAR primers could not make the use as SCAR primers because the specific false bands were detected in all cultivars. The remaining pairs of SCAR primer, CY850F/R, T700F/R, L2900F/R, amplified the specific band at expected size for three cultivars, CY-2, T-1, L-93, respectively. The CY850F/R primer amplified a band of 850bp in CY-2 cultivar, the T700F/R primer amplified a band of 700bp in T-1 cultivar, and the L2900F/R primer amplified a band of 2.9kb in L-93 cultivar. In this study we developed the SCAR markers to identify and distinguish the inerseeded creeping bentgrass cultivars in a golf course green.
