The number of pedestrian traffic accident fatalities is three times the number of car accidents in South Korea. Serious accidents are caused especially at intersections when the vehicle turns to their right. Various pedestrian collision warning services have been developed, but they are insufficient to prevent dangerous pedestrians. In this study, P2CWS is developed to warn approaching vehicles based on the pedestrians' characteristics. In order to evaluate the performance of the service, actual pedestrian data were collected at the intersection of Daejeon, and comparative analysis was carried out according to pedestrian characteristics. As a result, the performance analysis showed a higher accordance when the characteristics of the pedestrian is considered. Accordingly, we can conclude that identifying pedestrian characteristics in predicting the pedestrian crossing is important.

PURPOSES : In this study, we analyzed the road crossing behavior of older pedestrians on a mid-block signalized crosswalk, and compared it to that of younger pedestrians. In addition, we analyzed the correlation between accidents involving older pedestrians while crossing roads and their behavioral characteristics. Finally, we confirmed the reasons for an increase in accidents involving older pedestrians. METHODS : First, 30 areas with the highest incidence of accidents involving older pedestrians while crossing roads were selected as target areas for analysis. Next, we measured the start-up delay (the time elapsed from the moment the signal turns green to the moment the pedestrian starts walking) and head movement (the number of head turns during crossing a road) of 900 (450 older and 450 younger) pedestrians. The next step was to conduct a survey and confirm the differences in judgment between older and younger pedestrians about approaching vehicles. Finally, we analyzed the correlation between the survey results and traffic accidents. RESULTS : The average start-up delay and head movement of the older pedestrians was 1.58 seconds and 3.15 times, respectively. A definite correlation was obtained between head movement and the frequency of pedestrian traffic accidents. The results of our survey indicate that 17.3% of the older pedestrians and 7.8% of the younger pedestrians have a high crash risk. CONCLUSIONS : Behavioral characteristics of older pedestrians were closely correlated with accidents involving older pedestrians while crossing roads in mid-block signalized crosswalks. Our study indicates that in order to reduce the number of accidents involving older pedestrians, it is necessary to develop an improvement plan including measures such as installation of safety facilities taking the behavioral characteristics of older pedestrians into consideration and their safety education.
Pedestrians are exposed to accidents as a result of the lack of understanding the meaning of a flashing green signal. This study was to designed to relate changes of pedestrians' crossing characteristics as a functions of flashing green signal timings. A field survey was conducted to collect pedestrian preference and safety and it was examined by signal operation experiment. Two versions of new pedestrian signal timings were compared to the existing pedestrian signal timings. The results indicated that the number of pedestrians who starts to cross during flashing green signals was significantly decreased when flashing green signals started at 1/2 or 2/3 point of crossing. However, the number of pedestrians who remain in the crossing during red signals was significantly increased when flashing green signals started at 2/3 point of crossing. This study concludes that starting flashing green signals at 1/2 point of crossing is the safest. Also, implication and directions for its practical relevance were discussed.

Roundabouts, which belong to traffic circles, are intersections which are similar to the existing rotary form. Roundabouts recently have been constructed all around the world. And interests in roundabouts are increasing in Korea. However, there are lacks of research on pedestrian volume which has a great influence on operation efficiency of roundabouts in urban area. Therefore, this study suggests efficiency analysis and pedestrian signals in roundabouts according to the pedestrian volume. First, VISSIM simulation was organized to analyse volume of one lane roundabouts in urban area. Second, average delay of intersections was calibrated by VISSIM simulation dividing signalized intersections and non-signalized intersections depending on pedestrian volume. Finally, this study showed that roundabouts are suitable when pedestrian volume was under 200person/hr and traffic circles with a pelican signal are suitable when pedestrian volume was over 200person/hr. And when pedestrian volume and traffic volume are over 600person/hr and 1,500vph respectively, fixed signalized intersections fit well.
This study proposes methodology deterimining a basic pedestrian crossing capacity that plays a critical role in the installation of pedestrian signal at the crosswalks. The methodology is based on the pattern of vehicle arrived at the crosswalks. Erlang distribuion is used as headway distribution that can cover the various levels of flow rate. Models using Erlang distribution are represented by Erlang parameter (K) of 1, 2, or 3 at 2-, 4-, or 6-lane roadway in both directions. In addition, this study considered the only type of road with a pedestrian refuge area in the median that is used to wait for the allowable gap provided by the flow of another direction. As a result, the pedestrian capacity decreases as flow rate increases and Erlang parameter increases for the road with the pedestrian refuge. This study develops the models to determine the pedestrian capacity under a variety of flow rates and the outcomes of this study could be used as the criteria for the determination of the installation of pedestrian signal or for the provision of pedestrian refuge in the median of road.

It has reported that a median bus-stop island on an exclusive median bus corridor has shortened a unit crossing distance, encouraged a pedestrian's illegal jay walking, and thus increased the number of accidents in the area. Therefore, this study plans to analyze the various crossing patterns of pedestrians at exclusive median bus corridors. This study analyzes 30,184 pedestrian crossing data which are collected from the median bus-stops, 'Express Bus Terminal,' and reveals that the rate of spatial jaywalking was 37.8%. This rate is 11.1 times higher than the rate of traffic signal violation. Therefore, this study suggests that more research needs to be done to provide a traffic safety facilities for protecting spatial crossing pedestrians and preventing jaywalking and traffic signal violation.

In Korea, traffic accidents between pedestrians and vehicles in 2015 account for 38.8% of all accidents. This study proposes a system design that can measure the risk of conflict between a vehicle and a pedestrian. Firstly the systemdetect and estimate the position, speed, and directional data of the vehicle and the pedestrian. And then it estimate the conflict point between a vehicle and a pedestrian. The risk of conflict is quantified by estimating the pedestrian safety margin (PSM), which is the time difference between the arrival of the pedestrian at the crossing point to the point of conflict and the vehicle approaching the point. In this system each data is acquired through an external monitoring based evaluation module and an individual wearing module. In the future, such a system can be used for decision making such as the design of road hazard improvement facilities and the designation of the elderly protection area.
An investigation was conducted to evaluate both the time required and the time allowed for persons to cross streets. Currently, the local municipality uses a standardized formula to determine the time allotted for 'WALK' signals to function allowing pedestrian traffic to cross thoroughfares. The formula to determine the 'Theoretical Time(in seconds)' is the width of the street(in meter) divided by 1.2m/s. The basis of the denominator is 'normal' walking speed. Initially, 3 locations were chosen to evaluate the time between the appearance of the 'WALK' signal and the appearance of the 'DON'T WALK'. The interval between the two signals was assumed to allow a person to begin crossing the street at the appearance of the 'WALK' signal and terminate their crossing at the appearance of the 'DON'T WALK' signal. Of the 3 locations, 2 locations(elementary?middle schools and general hospital areas), the duration of the 'WALK' signal were not properly set and therefore need more time for those who use these cross walks. Specific details regarding the crossing locations and validity of the standardized formula were also presented and discussed.
The intelligent safety system for level crossing which employs information and communication technology has been developed in USA and Japan, etc. But, in Korea, the relevant research has not been performed. In this paper, we analyze the cause of railway level crossing accidents and the inherent problem of the existing safety equipments. Based on analyzed results, we design the intelligent safety system which prevent collision between a train and a vehicle. This system displays train approaching information in real-time at roadside warning devices, informs approaching train of the detected obstacle in crossing areas, and is interconnected with traffic signal to empty the crossing area before train comes. Especially, we present the video based obstacle detection algorithm and verify its performance with prototype H/W since the abrupt obstacles in crossing areas are the main cause of level crossing accidents. We identify that the presented scheme detects both pedestrian and vehicle with good performance. Currently, we demonstrate developed railway crossing intelligence system at one crossing of Young-dong-seon line of Korail with Sea Train cockpit.
