Detention pond has an important role in peak flow reduction to mitigate flood damage. Design of detention pond is accomplished through the preliminary stage, planning stage, and design stage in general. New development projects produce increased peak flow and flow amounts. In this case it is necessary to design the detention pond easily and simply. The simple procedure of detention pond design is proposed in this study. The relevant variables are peak flow ratio ($\alpha$) for the before and after development, and storage ratio which is ratio of storage volume to flow amounts. Simplified method for the detention pond design with runoff reduction is easily used for practical purposes.

In recent years, increases in impervious areas with rapid urbanization and land use changes are causing numerous hydrologic and environmental problems. In this study Low Impact Development (LID) was applied to investigate changes in runoff and peak runoff with LID plans. SWMM 5.0 was used to simulate LID Integrated Management Practices (IMPs) at study area. The SWMM estimated total runoff volume with conventional land use planning is (82.3%, 46.44 mm), (99%, 73.16 mm) greater than total runoff before urbanization, while total runoff with LID is (11.1%, 46.44 mm), (49%, 73.16 mm) greater than those before urbanization. With the LID adoption in land use planning, pervious area increases by 49.8% compared with that from the conventional urban land use planning, resulting in (32.7%, 46.44 mm), (23.6%, 73.16 mm) decrease in total runoff, and (32.6%, 46.44 mm), (18.5%, 73.16 mm) decreases in peak rate runoff. The results obtained from this study indicate that peak rate runoff, time to peak, and total runoff can be reduced with the LID in urban land use planning because the LID secures pervious areas with various LID IMPs. The SWMM simulated result using design storm data and the US EPA suggested CN values for various LID IMPs implies that how environment-friendly urban land use planning with the LID adoption is important for sustainable development at urbanizing watershed.

This study analyzed hydrological changes of stormwater runoff of Seolleung Jeongneung zone according to the application of LID system based on landscape Architectural technology. The results are as follows. First, when flooding occurred in Gwanghwamun in July 27, 2011, the maximum instantaneous rainfall amount was 183 mm/hr recorded at 10:00 on 27th for 10 minutes, and it was confirmed that rainfall intensity more than three times as high as the maximum rainfall of 57.5 mm/hr. Second, it is possible to control peak flow rate in the case of 1,500mm of soil thickness, so that it is possible to improve the vulnerability of flood damage in Seolleung and Jeongneung zone when applying the LID system. Third, in the berm height scenario, peak flow rate control was not controled in all depth level models, but the first stormwater runoff was delayed by 4 hours and 10 minutes compared to the soil thickness scenario. It was interpreted as a relatively important indicator the soil thickness for the initial stromwater runoff reduction and the berm height for the peak runoff. Through this, the systematic adaptation of landscape-friendly ecological factors within the cultural property protection zone could theoretically confirm the effects of flood disaster prevention.
Detention pond has an important role in peak flow reduction to mitigate flood damage. Design of detention pond is accomplished through the preliminary stage, and design stage in general. New development projects produce increased peak flow and flow amounts. In this case it is necessary to design the detention pond easily and simply. A simplified design method of the detention pond is suggested in this study. Used design variables are peak flow ratio(${\alpha}$) and storage ratio($S_r$). ${\alpha}$ is the peak flow ratio of before and after development of the basin. $S_r$ is a ratio of storage volume to total runoff volume. Applicability of the proposed method was also proved. The simple procedure of detention pond design is proposed in this study.
This study aimed to assess runoff reduction performance and determine installation priorities for Permeable Pavement (PP) and Rain Barrel (RB) within the Mokgam Stream basin. Optimal design parameters were determined to maximize the effectiveness of PP and RB in reducing runoff. Furthermore, the optimal parameters were incorporated to compare the runoff reduction performance of PP and RB. Analysis of the runoff curve at the basin outlet indicated that PP demonstrated superior performance in reducing runoff during the rising limb of the curve. At the same time, RB excelled within the falling limb. Comparisons of total runoff and peak runoff reduction by sub-catchment revealed that in larger sub-catchment areas, PP outperformed RB in runoff reduction. In contrast, RB exhibited higher performance in areas with a higher impervious ratio. Based on the evaluation of runoff reduction performance for PP and RB, installation priorities were determined within the Mokgam Stream basin. The results showed that PP and RB installations were prioritized for sub-catchments with larger areas and a higher impervious ratio. Furthermore, the correlation between the ranking of runoff reduction performance and sub-catchment characteristics showed a high correlation with both the impervious area ratio and sub-catchment geometrical properties in sub-watersheds exhibiting the top 25% runoff reduction performance. These results emphasize that when determining the priority for installing LID facilities in developed urban areas, it is necessary to consider not only the impervious area ratio but also the geometrical properties of the sub-catchment.
Among various Green Infrastructure measures for urban stormwater management, effects of porous pavement were quantitatively examined in terms of hydrological cycle. Different scenarios for porous pavement were introduced on a SWMM model and the effects were compared and analysed using discharge hydrographs. Two types of pavements having different runoff coefficients (0.05 & 0.5) were introduced to cover different ratio of entire road areas (100 %, 77.5 % and 40.4 %) and these made up in total 6 different scenarios. Total runoff volume was reduced and peak flow was significantly decreased by applying the porous pavement. The highest reduction for total runoff was shown from S-6(covering area: 100 %, runoff coefficient: 0.05) as 19 % followed by S-5(covering area: 77.5 %, runoff coefficient: 0.05, 16 %), while that of S-2(covering area: 40.4 %, runoff coefficient: 0.05) and S-1(covering area: 40.4 %, runoff coefficient: 0.5) were the lowest with 8 % and 5 %. This proved that the application of porous pavement would improve urban hydrological cycle.

Rapid urbanization has taken environmental toll on the surrounding which can be witnessed by the advent of global warming and climate change. Driven by environmental needs, Green Building Index (GBI) was established in Malaysia to drive initiative to lead the property industry towards becoming more environmental friendly. Green roofs (roof with vegetated cover) as one of the assessment criteria of GBI, are gaining attention in the Malaysian society as a versatile new environmental friendly mitigation technology. This paper evaluates the qualitative and quantitative performances of an extensive green roof at Humid Tropics Centre under local tropical climate. Simulations showed that the extensive green roof system could reduce the peak discharge up to 26% in relation to impervious brown roof. Its reduction ability decreased for storms with intense rainfall. Increment of pH was observed for the green roof runoff and the runoff water quality ranged between class I and II under Water Quality Index (WQI). High concentrations of phosphate were noticed in the runoff samples and substrates (fertilized planting soil) might be the potential contributor. Findings indicate that there was a reduction of around $1.5^{\circ}C$ for indoor temperature of the building after installation of the extensive green roof.

As the storm water runoff characteristics in urban areas have changed owing to urbanization, centralized facilities to reduce the urban flood runoff had been implemented. On the other hand, because they have their limitations, LID (Low Impact Development) of the distributed facilities for storm water runoff reduction is being actively planned and applied. The purpose of this study was to analyze the runoff characteristics for the spatial distribution of typical LID element techniques. This study set a study basin consisting of the five subbasins with the same basin and drainage systems, and analyzed the flood runoff characteristics from the two scenarios, one is for the locations and the other is for the number of green roofs (GR) and permeable pavement (PP), respectively, selected as typical LID element techniques. The SWMM implementation results showed that GR reduces 11.07% of the total and 3.42% of the peak amounts of storm water runoff, and PP leads to 18.09% of the total and 17.94% of the peak discharge reduction for a subbasin. Such a reduction rate is constant regardless of the LID locations, and increases linearly with the number of LID applications. The different runoff reduction rates between the GR and PP applications appear to be due to the effects of the different hydraulic conductivities in the control parameters for each LID.

A distributed hydrologic model of an urban drainage area on Bugok drainage area in Oncheon stream was developed and combined with a optimization method to determine the optimal location and number of best management practices (BMPs) for storm water runoff reduction. This model is based on the SCS-CN method and integrated with a distributed hydrologic network model of the drainage area using system of 4,211 hydrologic response units (HRUs). Optimal location is found by locating HRU combination that leads to a maximum reduction in peak flow at the drainage outlet in this model. The results of this study indicate the optimal locations and numbers of BMPs, however, for more exact application of this model, project cost and SCS-CN reduction rate of structural facilities such infiltration trench and pervious pavement will have to be considered.

High impervious surfaces increase the surface runoff during rainfall and reduces the underground infiltration thereby leading to water cycle distortion. The distortion of water cycle causes various urban environmental problems such as urban flooding, drought, water pollutant due to non-point pollution runoff, and water ecosystem damage. Climate change intensified seasonal biases in urban rainfall and affected urban microclimate, thereby increasing the intensity and frequency of urban floods and droughts. Low impact development(LID) technology has been applied to various purposes as a technique to reduce urban environmental problems caused by water by restoring the natural water cycle in the city. This study evaluated the contribution of hydrologic characteristics and water cycle recovery after LID application using long-term monitoring results of various LID technology applied in urban areas. Based on the results, the high retention and infiltration rate of the LID facility was found to contribute significantly to peak flow reduction and runoff delay during rainfall. The average runoff reduction effect was more than 60% at the LID facility. The surface area of the LID facility area ratio(SA/CA) was evaluated as an important factor affecting peak flow reduction and runoff delay effect.
