Sex pheromone composition was analyzed for Dichocrocis punctiferalis, which attacksapple, peach, chestnut fruits, etc., and its behavioral and field trapping studies were conducted to developa monitoring system with its sex pheromone. Virgin females showed maximum mating behavior andhairpencil extrusion behavior between 4-5 hrs after lights-off under 16L18D photoperiod and 26rf 1 "C.During this period, two sex pheromone components, ElO-hexadecenal and ZlO-hexadecenal, weredetected by GC analysis in the hexane extract of abdominal tips of virgin females. The best attraction ofmales to various synthetic sex pheromone blends was obtained at the 70 : 30 ratio of ElO-hexadecenal andZ10-hexadecenal for hair pencil extrusion and at the 80 : 20 ratio for flying upwind response. The highestattractiveness in fields was obtained between 70 : 30 and 80 : 20 from several tests in apple, peach andchestnut orchards.and chestnut orchards.
The damage rates of peach pyralid moth(Dichocrocis punctiferalis), which damages the chestnut fruits, were investigated annually from 1995 to 2010 according to year, region, and maturity. The damage rate by D. punctiferalis was the highest (34.5%) in 1998 and was the lowest (17.9%) in 2000. The pattern of the damage rate showed a repeating three-year cycle. There was a negative correlation ($-0.6261^*$) between rainfall and damage rate. There was a positive correlation ($0.5826^*$) between temperature and damage rate. The average damage rate of all surveyed regions was 22.2%. Of the surveyed areas, Hapcheon had the highest at 27% and Hamyang had the lowest at 15.0%. The damage rate of chestnut fruit depending on the maturity was 26.1% in an early maturing cultivar (Dantaek), and 19.3% and 21.1% in a late maturing cultivar (Eungi) and a medium maturing cultivar (Chukpa), respectively.

In order to survey the actual pesticide usage, this survey was carried out on the growers of 3 plant groups, fruit vegetables, fruits and rice field, from 2009 to 2011. 390 farmers were selected from main production areas to investigate their pesticide application during the growing seasons. Input amounts per area of domestic fruit vegetables was surveyed as 11.6 kg a.i./ha for red pepper of field culture, 2.0 kg a.i./ha for red pepper of greenhouse, 2.3 kg a.i./ha for strawberry, 2.2 kg a.i./ha for watermelon, 4.8 kg a.i./ha for cucumber, 1.5 kg a.i./ha for oriental melon and 2.1 kg a.i./ha for tomato, respectively. Input amounts per area on fruits and on rice field were surveyed as 11.7 kg a.i./ha for apple, 12.5 kg a.i./ha for pear, 7.7 kg a.i./ha for peach, 4.5 kg a.i./ha for grape, 40.0 kg a.i./ha for citrus 5.4 kg a.i./ha for persimmon, and 3.46 kg a.i./ha for rice, respectively. As a result of the actual pesticide usage survey, The safety guideline for pesticide use is generally kept well by all farmers of fruits vegetables, fruits and rice.
The simple microgel electrophoresis of single cells, a 'comet assay', on fruit seeds enabled the rapid identification of irradiated fruits by comparing the intact non-irradiated cells and the damaged cells of irradiated fruits. Grapes and plums were irradiated with 0.1, 0.5, 0.7, 1.0 kGy and strawberries, peaches, apples, and nectarines were irradiated with only 1.0 kGy. Seeds were isolated, crushed, and the suspended cells were embedded in an agarose layer. After lysis of the cells, they were subjected to microgel electrophoresis for 2 minutes, and then stained. The DNA radiation-induced fragmentation of all the fruits stretched and migrated out of the cells forming a tail toward the anode giving the appearance of a comet, while the undamaged cells appeared as intact nuclei without tails. Grape and plum seeds irradiated at 0.5 kGy and higher showed significant increases in tail length. With increasing the irradiation doses, longer extention of the DNA from the nucleus toward the anode was observed. Strawberry, peach, apple, and nectarine seeds irradiated with 1.0 kGy also showed the longer tails than non-irradiated ones. DNA comet assay as a rapid and inexpensive screening technique could be an officially validated method for the detection of irradiated fruits.

To investigate the optimal size of fruit bearing branches (FBBs) of 'Kawanakajima Hakuto' peach (Prunus persica Batsch) for production of high quality fruits, we evaluated shoot growth and fruit characteristics relative to FBB direction and thickness. FBB diameter, shoot length, fruit weight, and soluble solids content (SSC) averaged 6.9 mm, 32.6 cm, 333.6 g, and $11.2^{\circ}Brix$, respectively. Coefficients of variation of FBB diameter and shoot length were high as 35.8% and 75.3%. The highest frequency values revealed that 76.4% of FBBs had a diameter below 9.0 mm, 70.0% of shoot lengths were less than 40 cm, 24.8% of fruits were 310-340 g, and 66.9% of SSCs were $10.5-12.5^{\circ}Brix$. Shoot length and SSC were significantly affected by FBB diameter without direction, and fruit weight was significantly affected by interaction of FBB diameter and direction. There was a negative correlation ($r^2=0.094^*$) of FBB diameter and fruit weight with upward FBB directions, whereas FBB diameter and fruit weight were positively correlated ($r^2=0.246^{**}$) with downward FBB direction. With thick FBB diameter, shoot length, and SSC were significantly increased, but fruit weight was decreased. Therefore, downward FBBs below 9.0 mm in thickness are suitable for producing high-quality fruits of 'Kawanakajima Hakuto' peach.
Plum pox virus (PPV) is a significant viral disease in Prunus spp. worldwide. A nationwide survey was started in Prunus spp. orchards, since PPV was first detected from peach in Korea, 2015. During 2016-2017, samples were collected from 30,333 trees in 1,985 orchards of stone fruits in 8 provinces and 4 cities, Korea and tested by RT-PCR using specific PPV primer set. As a result, 21 trees including peach (9 trees), Japanese apricot (4 trees), plum (1 tree), apricot (7 trees) in 10 orchards were infected and controlled by eradication program. Amplicons of the expected size (547 bp) were obtained from total RNA of seven peach trees in 2016, and directly sequenced. BLAST analysis revealed the highest nucleotide (NT) identity (99%) with a PPV D isolates (LC331298, LT600782) in Genbank. The seven isolates from shared nt sequence identities of 98 to 100% with one another. Phylogenetic analysis showed the isolates in peach clustered closely with the PPV-D isolates from Korea, Japan, USA, and Canada. This is, to our knowledge, the first report of the presence of PPV in Prunus spp. orchards in Korea, 2016-2017, we hope that our results and efforts will contribute to effective measures for eradication of PPV.
Pesticide actual usage in fruit crop cultivation was surveyed, and usage trends of individual pesticides were evaluated to provide data for the development of indicators of environmental impact. The amount of pesticide used for fruit crops indicated the order of fungicide>insecticide>herbicide unlike the case of paddy rice. The fungicide rate of total usage was 72% in apple cultivation. Top ranking fungicides used on fruits were Mancozeb, Propineb, Thiophanate-methyl and the main insecticides were Mancozeb, Propineb, Thiophanate-methyl. The usuage by formulation types showed the order of WP>EC>SL>SC>SP>WG. Pesticide usage (a.i.) per hectare by different fruits was citrus 48.6kg, apple 27.1kg, pear 18.6kg, persimmon 17.5kg, peach 11.3kg and grape 9.2kg. Comparison of pesticide usage (a.i.,kg/ha) in some fruit crops between Korea and USA indicated that more pesticides were used for citrus, pear and peach in USA than Korea while more pesticides were used in Korea than USA for apple.
A distribution status of host plants for fruit-piercing moths was surveyed in Kocksung fruit growing area of Chonnam province during June to October, 1975. The results were summarized as follows; Main host plants of fruit·piercing larvae Smilax china L., Allizzia zulibrissim Dura, Cocculus trilobus Dc., Thalictrum aquilegifolium L., and Pterocarya rhoifolia Sieb & Zucc. Pterocarya rhoifolia Sieb & Zucc. were found to be distributed at mountain regions over 500m above sea level, while the other host plants were found to be distributed with in loom to 300m above sea level The moths was found from June 25th to Oct. 4th. Maximum emergence of the moths on plum an8 peach were about July 18th and on the grapes tree about August 31th. The moths collected from June 25th to Oct.4th were 17 spcies. Dermaleipa zuno Dalman $(35.7\%)$, Oraesia emaginata Fabriciul$(17.7\%)$, Oraesia excavata Butler $(12.9\%)$, Adrias tyramus amurensis Staduinger$(9.1\%)$, were collected much more than any other species; They accounted for approximately$70\%$ of total moths collected. In regards to the sugar contents of peach and plum, it was observed that the more the sugar concentrated, the more the fruits damaged. but the acid value of fruits had not shown any significant relationship with their attractants.
Fruit rot and blister canker, a disease of apple occurring severely in Korea has been studied for correct identification of the syndrome In fruit and apple trees. Among the fungi isolated from blister cankers, rough barks or fruits showing rotting of 7 different host species were Botryosphaeria berengeriana (pycnidial stage. Dethiorella mali), Penicillium expansum and Alternaria sp. from apple rots and Phomopsis sp. from pear fruit rots. The most dominant isolates were B. berengeriana. Ten isolates of D. mali were grouped in to two conidial types based up mycelial growth rate, growth habits and mycelial coloration on PDA. None of 10 isolates was chromogenic. Pycnidia in apple stems, stromatic, dark brown, globose or subglobose and the measuring were $103.5-287.5{\mu}\times92.0-287.5\mu$. The pycnidia contained hyaline, nonseptate, fusiform conidia. The sizes of pycnidiospore of isolates obtained from apple twig were $4.3-7.2{\mu}\times20.0-31.5{\mu}(average\;5.9\times25.4\mu)$. Some conidia of this fungus from apple, pear, peach and ornamental cherry showed 1-,2-,3-septate before or during germination. Microconidia were observed in pycnidia on PDA and fruit lesion of inoculated host. Symptoms on leaves and fruits were contoured brown spots when inoculated. Wart-like protuberance were formed on the surface of apple and pear. Canker appeared on branches of peach and ornamental cherry inoculated.
The peach pyralid moth (Dichocrocis punctiferalis) is reported as import ant pest insect to chestnut fruits in Asia including Korea. For seasonal occurrence of D. punctiferalis in 1996, 1998 and 1999, D. punctiferalis adults were collected by light trap and sex pheromone wing trap in the chestnut orchard. Also, damaged rate of chestnut fruits were examined each collecting site. In 1996, according to examination by using light trap at three different site in Kongju, the occurrence peak of 2nd gene ration of D. punctiferalis adults was early August. Collected individuals after September were cons ide red as 3rd generation. Damaged rate due to maturation type was 26.5% averagely. The order of damaged rate were early, late and middle maturation type as 35.04%, 19.35% and 26.03%, respectively. Using synthetic sex pheromone trap at Kongju, Cheungyang and Buyeo in 1998, occurrence peaks were occurred mid-August to 2nd generation and late September to 3nd gene ration in Kongju. However, from early-August to late-September 5 peaks were occurred sequentially in Cheungyang. Second generation adults were occurred in mid-August and 3rd ones were occurred from late-September to early-October in Buyeo. In 1999, occurrence peaks of 3rd generation were early, middle and late September in Kongju, Cheungyang and Buyeo respectively. Damaged rate were 6.8%, 6.6% and 15.3% in Kongju, Cheungyang and Buyeo, respectively. Damaged rate order due to variety were Eunki, Chukpa, Danpa, Bokpa, Wangjung, Byunggo57, Yuoma at Buyeo and were Chukpa, Dukmyung, Byunggo57 at Cheungyang in 1999. Damage rate of chestnut were different with variety. Eunki and Chukpa in Buyeo and Chukpa and Dukmyung in Cheungyang were more damaged by D. punctiferalis respectively.
