This study presents the evaluation of the patching materials that are used to repair the distress of asphalt pavement. Four kinds of patching materials currently used in practice were tested in both laboratory and field. The laboratory tests included the dry and soaked Marshall stability test, indirect tensile test, wheel tracking test and adhesive strength between the asphalt pavement and the repairing material was tested as a performance test. The field study was conducted using the slab samples placed on the location of vehicle tire passing and the performance of the repairing materials were investigated as passing the traffic load. The result of the laboratory tests were satisfied with the current design criteria and material standard except for water-immersion stability. Type C patching material showed the highest adhesive shear strength among the patching materials tested. However, the mature distress, such as rutting and stripping were monitored after construction in 10 days. It was found that performance of patching material is lack of quality behavior when they were applied in the field and required to develop and applu to prevent the mature distress of the current patching materials.

Most defects in the cement concrete pavement take place mainly on the joints. These corner cracks don't happen as often as others relatively. it happens continuously. In order to analyze the structural behavior of the corner cracks, The finite element structural analysis was performed on the representative section of the cement concrete pavements using JSLAB which uses FEM analysis method. On plain cement concrete pavements, The result shows that loading not only on the joints but also on the center of slab brings out the maximum stress on the corner of slab and it is expected to make the corner cracks.
Evaporation of concrete influences the development of both initial transverse cracking and delamination in the concrete slab. It was suggested that spatting distress might develop in the slab where the initial transverse cracking occurred by theoretical equations and a field investigation. Thus, efforts to prevent the evaporation of concrete using proper curing methods are required to minimize the distresses of the slabs. Effective curing thickness (ECT) concept was used in this paper to evaluate various curing methods used to prevent the evaporation from concrete. Curing effectiveness quantified by the ECT of different types and amounts of curing compound under various curing conditions was investigated based on the results of laboratory tests. According to the test results, the wind speed is inferred to be a significant factor of the magnitude and continuance duration of the curing effectiveness.

Energy foundations and other thermo-active ground structure, energy wells, energy slab, and pavement heating and cooling represent an innovative technology that contributes to environmental protection and provides substantial long-term cost savings and minimized maintenance. This paper focuses on earth-contact concrete elements that are already required for structural reasons, but which simultaneously work as heat exchangers. Pipes, energy slabs, filled with a heat carrier fluid are installed under conventional structural elements, forming the primary circuit of a geothermal energy system. The natural ground temperature is used as a heat source in winter and heat sink in summer season. The system represented very high heating and cooling performance due to the stability of EWT from energy slab. Maximum heat pump unit COP and system COP were 4.9 and 4.3.

A method of calculating the natural frequency corresponding to the first mode of vibration of beams and toll.or structures, with irregular cross sections and with arbitrary boundary conditions was developed and reported by Kim, D. H. in 1974. In this paper, the result of application of this method to the special orthotropic plates with free edges supported on elastic foundation and with a pair of opposite edges under axial forces is presented. Such plates represent the concrete highway slab and hybrid composite pavement of bridges. The reinforced concrete slab can be assumed as a special orthotropic plate, as a close approximation. The highway slab is supported on elastic foundation, with free boundaries. Sometimes, the pair of edges perpendicular to the traffic direction may be subject to the axial forces. The plate is subject to the concentrated load/loads, in the form of traffic loads, or the test equipments. Any method nay be used to obtain the deflection influence surfaces needed for this vibration analysis. Finite difference method is used for this purpose, in this paper. The influence of the modulus of the foundation, the aspect ratio of the plate, and the magnitudes of the axial forces and the concentrated attached mass on the plate, on the natural frequency is thoroughly studied.

In this study design and construction technique for joint-less integral abutment for short to mid span bridges was developed. Expansion of superstructure due to thermal effect was absorbed in the flexible pile-type abutment in stead of expansion joint in the conventional bridges. Design method for pile subject to vertical and horizontal force was proposed. Backfill, approach slab and details of its connection joint with pavement was also proposed.

The behavior of the concrete slabs on grade considering the horizontal resistance at the slab bottom, which exists due to the shear resistance of the foundation and the friction between the slab and the foundation, has been investigated when the slabs-on-grade are subjected to the thermal load. Analytical formulations have been developed to include the effect of the horizontal resistance at the slab bottom employing the thin plate on an elastic foundation that is widely used for the analysis of concrete slabs-on-grade and rigid pavement systems. Finite element formulations have then been developed using the plate bending elements and the flat shell elements. The solutions from the analytical and numerical models have been compared and showed very good agreement. The sensitivity of the horizontal resistance to the stresses of the concrete slab has been investigated with various values of the slab thickness, elastic modulus, and vortical stiffness of the foundation when subjected to the temperature gradient between the top and bottom of the slab and the uniform temperature drop throughout the slab depth. The analysis results show that the horizontal resistance at the plate bottom can significantly affect the stresses of the slab when the thermal loads are applied.
This study was conducted to evaluate the necessity of the anchor lug system in continuously reinforced concrete pavement(CRCP) by comparing longitudinal displacements of CRCPs with and without anchor lugs, and to investigate the effect of horizontal cracking on CRCP performance by measuring the vertical displacements. The measurements before and after the anchor lug section was separated were conducted for 12 days in June, and for 14 days in August after the abrupt displacements according to cutting disappeared, respectively. This short term measurement results showed that when anchor lugs were installed, a daily displacement variation at any location was less than 0.1mm; therefore, longitudinal movements were negligibly small. When there were no anchor lugs, longitudinal displacements mainly occurred near the free end and the displacement variation was small; therefore, an expansion joint system seems to be employed at a CRCP terminus without installing anchor lugs. However, further studies are needed to verify the terminus behavior due to annual temperature changes. The horizontal crack width variation was ignorable and did not affect the vertical displacement of the slab. Therefore, the horizontal crack did not delaminate the slab and did not seem to reduce the structural capacity and performance of CRCP.
The transformed field domain analysis method was developed in this study to investigate the aspects of the stress distribution in overlaid concrete pavement systems under multi-axle vehicle loads. The overlay was assumed to be perfectly bonded or perfectly unbonded to the existing concrete pavement. The loads considered included the dual tired single-axle, tandem-axle, and tridem-axle loads, and the effects of the overlay's thickness, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio on the stress distribution were investigated. Details of the analysis method in the transformed field domain to analyze the overlaid pavement was described in this paper and the analysis results were verified by comparing with those obtained using the finite element method. From the analysis, it was found that the maximum tensile stress in the existing slab decreased as the overlay's thickness, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio increased, and the bonded overlay showed more significant effects than the unbonded one. The overlay's Poisson's ratio did not much affect the stresses, and the features of the maximum stress reduction in the existing slab due to the increase of the thickness, elastic modulus, and Poisson's ratio of the overlay were investigated. The effects of the number of axles on the stress distribution and the maximum stress were also investigated.
