Passivity theory is significantly applied to analyze stability of nonlinear dynamic systems and construct its stable control systems. This paper presents a passivity based control design approach for exciters and governors which are employed to regulate the terminal voltage and the rotor velocity of synchronous generator systems in industry fields. We consider the IEEE type 1 exciter and the gas turbine (GT) governor models respectively in this paper. We first carry out a passivity analysis for exciter and governor control systems, which are numerically obtained from its mathematical models. And then its control parameters are selected to assure passivity conditions in a design procedure. Lastly, we investigate numerical simulations to demonstrate reliability of the proposed control approach against large-scale generators with parameter changes.
Recently proposed control scheme for a stable teleoperation, which was based on two-port time-domain passivity approach[21], has been successful for a contact with high stiffness environments. However, we found several conservatisms during the contact with deformable environments and unconstrained motion. The two-port time-domain passivity controller was excessively dissipating energy even though it was not necessary for some cases of an unconstrained motion and soft contact. The main reason of those conservatisms was on the fact that the two-port time-domain passivity controller was activated without considering the amount of energy dissipation at the master and slave manipulators. Especially, the exclusion of the slave manipulator from the two-port was the dominant reason of the conservatisms. In this paper, we consider the amount of energy dissipation at slave manipulator for designing the time-domain passivity observer and controller. The measured interaction force between slave manipulator and environment allow the time-domain passivity observer to include the amount of energy dissipation at the slave manipulator. Based on the modified passivity observer, reference energy following method[24] is applied to satisfy the passivity condition in real-time. The feasibility of the developed methods is proved with experiments. Improved performance is obtained for an interaction with deformable environments and an unconstrained motion.

A practical issue is studied to improve the performance of a new energy based method of achieving stable, high performance haptic interface control. The issue is related to resetting the amount of energy accumulated in the Passivity Observer for faster operation. A heuristic method is derived and experimentally tested for the resetting and it is shown to help the PC to operate sooner when the system gets active. Experimental results are presented for the “Excalibur” haptic device.
We study the transient stability control problem for electric power system. Passivity-based control method is used to obtain transient stability. We propose a method which uses neural network to obtain passivity and the transient stability, and compare the simulation result with that of speed gradient method which was developed by other researchers.
Automatic guided vehicle in the factory has an important role to advance the flexible manufacturing system. In this paper, we propose a novel object-transportation control algorithm of cooperative AGV systems to apply decentralized control to multiple AGV systems. Each AGV system is under nonholonomic constraints and conveys a common object-transportation in a horizontal plain. Moreover it is shown that cooperative robot systems ensure stability and the velocities of augmented systems convergence to a scaled multiple of each desired velocity field for cooperative AGV systems. Finally, the application of proposed virtual passivity-based decentralized control algorithm via system augmentation is applied to trace a circle. Finally, the simulation and experimental results for the object-transportation by two AGV systems illustrates the validity of the proposed virtual-passivity decentralized control algorithm.

Because of the shortcomings of the PID controllers and traditional drive systems of permanent magnet synchronous motors (PMSMs), a PMSM passivity-based control (PBC) drive system based on a quasi-Z source matrix converter (QZMC) is proposed in this paper. The traditional matrix converter is a buck converter with a maximum voltage transmission ratio of only 0.866, which limits the performance of the driven motor. Therefore, in this paper a quasi-Z source circuit is added to the input side of the two-stage matrix converter (TSMC) and its working principle has also been verified. In addition, the controller of the speed loop and current loop in the conventional vector control of a PMSM is a PID controller. The PID controller has the problem since its parameters are difficult to adjust and its anti-interference capability is limited. As a result, a port controlled dissipative Hamiltonian model (PCHD) of a PMSM is established. Thereafter a passivity-based controller based on the interconnection and damping assignment (IDA) of a QZMC-PMSM is designed, and the stability of the equilibrium point is theoretically verified. Simulation and experimental results show that the designed PBC control system of a PMSM based on a QZMC can make the PMSM run stably at the rated speed. In addition, the system has strong robustness, as well as good dynamic and static performances.

The mathematical model of a three-phase voltage source pulse-width modulation (PWM) DC/AC inverter is non-linear, and in view of the traditional linear control strategy it can not meet the requirements of designing a high-performance inverter. What's more, when the loads are not pure resistive loads, the inverter further requires that the controller possess high-performance. This paper proposes a nonlinear control strategy for the inverter called Passivity-based Control. We can alter the inverter model in three-phase abc coordinate to two-phase synchronous rotating dq coordinate for establishing the port-control Hamiltonian (PCH) model for this system. We can control the distribution of energy in the system to achieve the control aim. Simulation results show that the passivity-based control method can make this system possess a level of high-performance that is both robust and dynamic.
In this paper, the voltage tracking control of a conventional DC-DC boost converter affected by unknown, time-varying circuit parameter perturbations is investigated. Based on the fundamental property of incremental passivity, a passivity based control law is designed. Then, to obtain a better disturbance rejection property, two generalized proportional integral (GPI) observers are employed to estimate the time-varying uncertainties in the output voltage and inductor current channels, and the estimated values are applied as feedforward compensation. Moreover, the global trajectory tracking performance of a system with disturbances is ensured under the composite controller. Finally, simulation and experiment studies are provided to demonstrate the feasibility and effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that the proposed controller delivers a promising disturbance rejection capability as well as a good nominal tracking performance.
This paper presents the state of the art of control strategies for bilateral teleoperation systems under time delays. In the bilateral teleoperation that has force feedback, the time delay in the communication channel is the main source of instability. To cope with this problem. a number of control methods have been proposed. Among many control strategies. key aspects of the recent passivity-based methods are mainly summarized for approaches with wave variables. PO/PC (passivity observer/passivity controller), simple PD, and energy bounds.
