  • It is well known that the denominator of the Dedekind sum s(c, d) divides 2 gcd(d, 3)d and that no smaller denominator independent of c can be expected. In contrast, here we prove that we usually get a smaller denominator in S(H, d), the sum of the s(c, d)'s over all the c's in a subgroup H of order n > 1 in the multiplicative group $(\mathbb{Z}/d\mathbb{Z})^*$. First, we prove that for p > 3 a prime, the sum 2S(H, p) is a rational integer of the same parity as (p-1)/2. We give an application of this result to upper bounds on relative class numbers of imaginary abelian number fields of prime conductor. Finally, we give a general result on the denominator of S(H, d) for non necessarily prime d's. We show that its denominator is a divisor of some explicit divisor of 2d gcd(d, 3).

  • Chirality is ubiquitous in physics and biology from microscopic to macroscopic phenomena, such as fermionic interactions and DNA duplication. In photonics, chirality has traditionally represented differentiated optical responses for right and left circular polarizations. This definition of optical chirality in the polarization domain includes handedness-dependent phase velocities or optical absorption inside chiral media, which enable polarimetry for measuring the material concentration and circular dichroism spectroscopy for sensing biological or chemical enantiomers. Recently, the emerging field of non-Hermitian photonics, which explores exotic phenomena in gain or loss media, has provided a new viewpoint on chirality in photonics that is not restricted to the traditional polarization domain but is extended to other physical quantities such as the orbital angular momentum, propagation direction, and system parameter space. Here, we introduce recent milestones in chiral light-matter interactions in non-Hermitian photonics and show an enhanced degree of design freedom in photonic devices for spin and orbital angular momenta, directionality, and asymmetric modal conversion.

  • The concepts of pseudocodeword and pseudoweight play a fundamental role in the finite-length analysis of LDPC codes. The pseudoredundancy of a binary linear code is defined as the minimum number of rows in a parity-check matrix such that the corresponding minimum pseudoweight equals its minimum Hamming distance. By using the value assignment of Chen and Kløve we present new results on the pseudocodeword redundancy of binary linear codes. In particular, we give several upper bounds on the pseudoredundancies of certain codes with repeated and added coordinates and of certain shortened subcodes. We also investigate several kinds of k-dimensional binary codes and compute their exact pseudocodeword redundancy.

  • A total of 16 sows (average parity = 3.5 ± 0.10, standard deviation = 2.05) and their newborn pigs (Duroc × [Landrace × Yorkshire], initial body weight 1.53 ± 0.07 kg) were used in a 21-day study. On day 3 of age, piglets along with their dam were divided into two groups: CON and TRT. CON group piglets did not receive any iron injection while, TRT group piglets received 200 mg of injectable iron (GleptoForte) in a single dose. The administration of iron at day-3 of birth improved weaning body weight and overall average daily gain in sucking piglets compared with their control counterparts. For blood criteria, injection of 200 mg of iron improved serum iron values and hematocrit and decreased total iron binding capacity (TIBC) during the day 21 period. In summary, 200 mg iron injection at birth resulted in greater growth performance and blood iron status. These results indicate that providing 200 mg of injectable iron is sufficient to optimize the growth performance and blood iron status of suckling piglets.

  • This study was conducted to estimate the effects of environmental factors on certain reproductive traits in Korean cattle on the basis of data from Korean Cattle Improvement Areas which were surveyed from 1986 to 1995. Results obtained were summarized as follows ; 1. Least square means of the reproductive traits estimated were 466.11${\pm}$5.72 days for age at 1st service, 480.10${\pm}$6.15 days for age at 1st conception, 742.79${\pm}$7.48 days for age at 1st calving, 64.97${\pm}$1.42 days for days at 1st service postpartum, 72.06${\pm}$1.73 days for days open, 355.93${\pm}$1.92days for calving interval, 285.38${\pm}$0.42 days for gestation length and 1.21${\pm}$0.02 days for number of services for conception, respectively. 2. The ranges of the least squares means for the districts were 447.62${\pm}$5.94-490.72${\pm}$5.94 days for age at 1st service, 464.27${\pm}$6.38-505.20${\pm}$6.39 days for age at 1st conception, 721.91${\pm}$7.85-772.75${\pm}$7.80 days for age at 1st calving, 62.27${\pm}$1.55-68.97${\pm}$1.74days for days at 1st service postpartum, 69.74${\pm}$1.97-74.36${\pm}$2.27days for days open, 352.71${\pm}$2.18-359.64${\pm}$2.09 days for calving interval, 284.52${\pm}$0.42-286.04${\pm}$0.47days for gestation length and 1.11${\pm}$0.02-1.30${\pm}$0.02 days for number of services for conception, respectively. 3. Age at 1st service was latest in the cows with Basic Register and tended to be earlier for the more advanced registers. The number of services per conception tended to increase for the more advanced registers. 4. Days at 1st service postpartum was longest in the 2nd parity and tended to be shorter with the advancement of parity. The number of services per conception tended to decrease with the advancement of parity. 5. As the calving year advances from 1987 to 1995, days at 1st service postpartum, days open and calving interval tended to be longer, and number of service per conception tended to increase. 6. Days at 1st service postpartum, days open and calving interval were shorter in the cows that calved in spring and summer than in the cows that calved in fall and winter. The number of services per conception was larger in the cows that cocalved in fall and winter than the cows that calved in spring and summer.

  • The purpose of this study was to estimate the genetic parameters and trend of Landrace and Yorkshire pigs, which were raised on private farms from 1999 to 2005 and tested for their reproductive performance by the Korea Animal Improvement Association. Prior to analysis, records without pedigree or having value with larger than±3×standard deviation for the Total number of born were excluded. The effects of breed and environmental factors were estimated with least square method(Harvey, 1979), and estimation of breeding values and genetic parameters were performed on the data of 1’st litter only with GIBBSF90(Misztal, 2001) which was programmed according to Gibbs Sampling method based on Bayesian Inference by Gianola and Fernando(1986), Jensen(1994) and others. Gibbs sampling was performed 50,000 times for each parameter, and the first 5000 samples were regarded as those in burn-in period and thus, excluded for post hoc analysis. Total number of born and total number of accident were statistically significant(p<0.01) for the breed, farrowing year, farrowing season and parity effects, and the number born alive at birth was statistically significantp<(0.01) for the breed, farrowing year, farrowing season and parity effects. No particular trend was observed in the genetic and phenotypic improvement of the total number of born and number born alive at birth before 2001, when the piglet registration system started, but the tendencies of increasing for the total number of born and number born alive and decreasing for the total number of accident were observed since 2001. Somewhat higher heritability estimates of our study seems to be attributed to the situations that first parity records with poor farrowing performances were used in the analyses and it was impossible to obtain accurate reproductive performance due to the absence of criteria for record keeping at the level of individual farms.

  • This survey was carried out to investigate the occurrence of reproductive disorders in Korean native cattle (Hanwoo). The general management status such as barn type, feed intake, parity and type of reproductive disorders were examined in the Hanwoo farms. In this survey, the total incidence of reproductive disorders that was assessed from 54 Hanwoo farms was 11.6% (73/ 631). We first examined the incidence of reproductive disorders following herd size per farm. The rates of reproductive disorders in under 10 heads, 10 to 20 heads and over 20 heads were 25.2%, 9.4% and 8.3%, respectively (P<0.05). The rate of reproductive disorders in tie stall barn was significantly (P<0.05) higher than that in free stall barn (14.9% vs. 8.1%). The major types of reproductive disorders were follicular cysts (21.8%), fat necrosis (21.8%), and repeat breeding (17.8%). The rate of reproductive disorders assessed by the parity tended to decrease as the parity increased. The relationship between incidence of reproductive disorders and body condition score (BCS) was investigated in 203 Hanwoo. The incidence of reproductive disorder was 80.0%, 8.8%, 9.4%, 10.0%, 33.3% and 57.1% at 1.5, 2.0, 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 of BCS, respectively. These data show that the increase of herd size, barn type and BCS affect the incidence of reproductive disorders such as follicular cysts, fat necrosis and repeat breeding in Hanwoo.

  • This study was performed to investigate the effects of multiple superovulation and parity on embryo production in Hanwoo cows. Donors were superovulate 4 times $1\~2$ months interval and inserted CIDR plus (with the capsule of estradiol benzoate 10mg) on Day 10 from standing heat for 9 days and injected 2.5ml FSH (Antorin R-10) 2 times in a day on 6th day to 10th day from insertion of CIDR and the doses of FSH were decreasing 0.5ml on every 2 times. On 3th day of FSH injection, 25ml $PGF_2{\alpha}$ were injected i.m. and on 4th day, CIDR was removed. After 2 days from removing CIDR, AI was performed 2 times 12 hour apart with 2 straws of Korean Proved frozen Semen and simultaneously 200ug/ml GnRH was injected and embryos were recovered on 7th day from Al. The response rates of superovulated donors were $85.7\%,\;90.5\%,\;62.5\%,\;100\%$ from 1 to 4 times of superovulation, respectively. There were significant differences among No. of superovulation times (P<0.05). The results of transferable embryos were 3.7, 3.4, 3.4, 5.7 from 1 to 4 times of superovualtion, respectively. There were no differences among No. of superovulation times. The results of transferable embryos were 2.5, 3.0, 5.3, 3.0, 3.4 form heifer, first born to 4 the born, respectively. There were significant differences among the parities of donors (P<0.05). These results suggested that even 4 times of superovulations of Hanwoo donors could be able to recover transferable embryos, it might be used the donors maximally and improved the adaptation of embryo transfer to farms safely.

  • The study was conducted to determine the main effects of breed, sire, parity, farrowing year and month on preweaning body weight and postweaning traits. The data analysis were the record of 253 male pigs produced from 54 boars of Landrace, Hampshire, Large Yorkshire and Duroc purebreds at National Animal Breeding Institute from 1978 to 1983. The results obtained in this study are summarized as follows. 1. The effect of breed on preweaning body weight was highly significant at 1% level for body weight at birth, 21 days and 56days, and effect of parity was highly significant at 1% level for body weight at 56 days. 2. On preweaning body weight by breed, Duroc was superior with $1.593{\pm}0.001Kg$ for body weight at birth, and Landrace was superior with $6.227{\pm}0.199$ and $18.590{\pm}0.493Kg$ for body weight at 21 days and 56 days, respectively. 3. The effect of breed on postweaning traits were highly signicant at 1% level for average daily gain, feed efficiency, backfat thickness and days to 90Kg, and the effect of parity was significant at 5% level for backfat thickness. 4. On postweaning traits by breed, Duroc was superior with $876.275{\pm}8.198g$ and $2.754{\pm}0.198$ for average daily gain and feed efficiency, respectively, and Hampshire was thin with $1.969{\pm}0.198$ em for backfat thickness.
