The purpose of this study was to identify a couple's parental efficacy combination and, then, analyze parental role-sharing and parenting stress according to this combination type. The subjects were 307 couples who have a child in 1st or 2nd grade. The main results were as follows: First, fathers and mothers, as a group, did not differ in terms of parental efficacy. Secondly, some demographic variables related to parental efficacy. Thirdly, there are more couples who have similar levels of parental efficacy than those who have different levels of parental efficacy. Fourth, no significant difference in parental role-sharing was found among the 4 types of couple's parental efficacy. Fifth, mothers had low parental stress when both of the couple had high levels of parental efficacy while fathers perceived low parental stress if only he, himself, had a high level of parental efficacy.
This study examined how parental role stress, family cohesion, and family adaptation of mothers who have adolescent children influenced parental efficacy. The subjects were 739 mothers of 370 junior high school and 369 senior high school children. Collected data were analyzed using t-test, correlation analysis, and hierarchical regression analysis after analyzing the data. The results of the study were as follows. First, mothers with high incomes, high educational level, and children with high school grades saw an increase in parental efficacy. Second, there were significant positive correlations in parental role stress, family cohesion, family adaptation and the parental efficacy of mothers. Third, the results of this study showed that parental role stress, family cohesion, and family adaptation were factors to understand the parental efficacy of mothers. Family cohesion was also an important factor to understand the parental efficacy of mothers. The findings confirm that the anxiety of parental role stress for mothers who have adolescent children is not a negative factor in regards to lower parental efficacy. The findings suggest that parental education programs for mothers of adolescent children and a required social welfare system for parental roles was not recognized as a stress factor.
The Purpose of this study, was to examine the effects of mothers' parental efficacy and parental practices on children's social ability. The participants included 218 five year old children (116 boys, 102 girls). This study employed the 'Parent self-agent scale (Dumka, Stoerzinger, Jackson, & Roosa, 1996), a modified version of 'child rearing practices report'(Block, 1981), and 'Preschool Sociaffective Profile' (LaFreniere, Dumas, Capuano & Dubeau, 1992). Parental efficacy and parental practices were evaluated by the mothers. The children's social ability was evaluated by both mothers and teachers.'rho main results were as follows: (1) The children's social ability was affected significantly by their gender. (2) The parental efficacy was positively correlated with authoritative parental practices. (3) Children's gender, mothers' parental efficacy, and authoritative parental practices affected children's social ability.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships between parental childrearing attitude and parental childrearing behavior and the effect of parental childrearing attitude and parental childrearing behavior on children's self-efficacy. The subjects included 293 children from the 4th grade to the 6th grade in two elementary schools in Seoul and Incheon. The results were as follows: First, the subjects recognized the difference between parental childrearing attitude and parental childrearing behavior; Second, the children's self-efficacy varied depending upon the style of parental childrearing attitude and the level of recognition of parental childrearing attitude by the children; Third, the children's self-efficacy varied depending upon the style of parental childrearing behavior and the level of recognition of parental childrearing behavior by the children. Several suggestions were made concerning future parental childrearing attitude and parental childrearing behavior.
The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of parental beliefs, efficacy and stress on mother's parenting behaviors. The subjects were 243 mothers of two to three-Year-old children in Seoul. The main results showed that parental beliefs, efficacy and stress were significantly related with parenting behaviors. That is, the resets of mutiple regression analysis indicated that parental efficacy, beliefs and stress were significant variables predicting mother's parenting behavior. However, the predictive powers of these variables were different depending on the characteristics of parenting behaviors. And the relationship between mother's parental stress and parenting behaviors was mediated by mother's parental efficacy. To conclude, mother's cognitions such as parental beliefs, parental efficacy, and a perception of parenting stress turned out to be the vital factors in predicting parenting behaviors.
The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between childrearing belief and parental efficacy of women before and after childbirth. For this purpose 253 pregnant women and 256 mothers with infants under one year of age were contacted and asked to fill in a packet of survey questionnaire at their visits to obstetrician, gynecologist and pediatrician. The questionnaire includes questions about what mothers value in childrearing, their expectations for their children and parental efficacy. Data collected were analyzed using SAS PC program. It was reported that comparing to mothers, pregnant women view childrearing in more ideal lights and expect their children to be more exceptional. Also working mothers reported comparatively lower parental efficacy than full-time mothers suggesting that social support system to minimize pressure coming from work for working mothers with young children should be provided and the parental education methods to enhance the parental efficacy should be sought.
The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of expenditure on private education and stress caused by private education on the parental efficacy of mothers of junior and senior high school students. The subjects were 300 mothers of students who were enrolled in the junior and senior high school in Seoul and its suburbs. The results were as follows: First, the level of stress from private education was found to be higher than the degree of parental efficacy. Second, a hierarchical regression analysis was performed by using expenditure on private education and stress caused by private education as independent variables and the socio-demographic characteristics of mothers as control variables in order to identify their effect on the parental efficacy of mothers of junior and senior high school students. The results show that stress from private education and monthly income were significantly related to parental efficacy. That is, the lower the level of stress from private education and the higher the monthly income, the higher was the degree of parental efficacy. These findings suggest that expenditure on private education seems to be determined by the household income level; thus, income may affect psychological stress and parental efficacy of mothers with respect to the process of providing private education.
This study examined the relationship between parental efficacy, marriage satisfaction, social support, neighborhood context, and parental involvement in preschool children's education in low income families. Total 460 low income parents' data about parental efficacy, marriage satisfaction, social support, neighborhood context, and parental involvement are collected from the data of index studies for Korean child and adolescent's development in 2009. Parental efficacy, marriage satisfaction, perceived social support and perceived neighborhood context correlated positively with parental involvement. Regression analysis detected different patterns of association between these variables and the three dimensions of parent involvement. Perceived neighborhood context was associated with child care involvement, while parental efficacy was the most influential factor related to child leisure involvement. Marriage satisfaction was the strongest factor influencing involvement in children's educational activity. These results support the validity of a multi-dimensional, ecological conceptualization of parent involvement in low income families.
This study investigates the relationships between parental efficacy and parental practices among Korean immigrant parents in the US. Parental efficacy constitutes a special aspect of parental belief systems focusing on the beliefs that parents have the capabilities to manage the tasks of nurturing and socializing their children. Results showed that parental efficacy was positively related to the authoritative dimension of parental practices. However, there was no significant negative relationship between parental efficacy and the authoritarian dimension of parental practices. Interestingly, the authoritative and authoritarian dimensions of parental practices were highly correlated among Korean immigrant parents. This finding is in contrast to much of the research on Anglo American parenting that indicates that authoritarian practices are not compatible with authoritative practices. For Korean immigrant parents, authoritarian practices seem not to have detrimental connotation. Therefore, it can be assumed that Korean immigrant parents parental practices have different underlying mechanisms compared to Anglo American parents. We need to focus parenting research with a broader perspective on the sociological and historical context from which parental practices arise.
This study explored the effects of parenting efficacy and parental role satisfaction on the life-satisfaction of employed and unemployed mothers. The 527 mothers(234 employed, and 277 unemployed), with a child under 7 years old, were selected for this study. The results were as follows. First, employment had significant correlations with several factors, including the number of children, family income, educational level of parents, parent-child relations, preparedness for parental role conflict, and life-satisfaction. Second, for employed mothers, life-satisfaction had positive relationships with various factors, including family income, fathers' educational level, parenting efficacy, and parental role satisfaction; whereas, that of unemployed mothers had positive relationships with parenting efficacy, and parental role satisfaction. Third, for employed mothers, life-satisfaction was affected by several factors, such as family income, parental role satisfaction, parent-child relations, and preparedness for parental role conflict; however, unemployed mothers were affected by the number of children, the fathers' educational level, and self-confidence relating to the parental role, general satisfaction, and preparedness for parental role conflict.
