  • This study investigated the relation of androgynous parent's child-rearing practices to children's self-perceived competence by comparison of the effectiveness of androgynous people as parents compared with parents who are other-typed in their sex-role identity. The subjects were 362 third and sixth grade children and their parents selected from two elementary schools in Seoul. The instruments were a children's self-perceived competence scale, a perception of maternal warmth and control scale, a perception of paternal warmth and control scale, parent's self-esteem scale, and parent's sex-role identity scale. Frequencies, percentiles, mean, ${\chi}^2$ test, two way-ANOVA, one way-ANOVA, Cronbach's ${\alpha}$ and $Scheff{\acute{e}}$-test were used for data-analysis. The major findings showed that (1) Androgynous and masculine fathers had higher self-esteem than feminine or undifferentiated fathers. Androgynous, masculine, and feminine mothers had higher self-esteem than undifferentiated mothers. (2) There was no difference in children's perception of parental warmth and control as related to parent's sex-role identity. Androgynyous parents were not more likely to be authoritative parents. (3) Sons of androgynous parents had higher self-perceived competence than those of sex-typed parents, while daughters of sex-typed parents had higher self-perceived competence than those of androgynous parents.

Methods: For this study, 192 children's parents were questioned in a general hospital located in Busan from August 1 to 31. 2009. The collected data were scored by use of frequencies, $x^2$ test, t-test, AONVA, Pearson's correlation coefficient via SPSS/WIN 17.0. Results: With the compare of characteristics related to children's parents visiting emergency room and pediatric outpatient department, there were statistically significant difference in relation and age of parent, main caregiver, cause of arrival, and waiting time from arrival to procedure. The perception of uncertainty for parent in the emergency room showed significant difference to outpatient department. In nursing service, the highest score was category of professional skill and technic. In addition, overall parents' perceptions on providing information showed lower than any other nursing service. Last but not least, a significant correlation indicated between the perception of uncertainty and satisfaction of nursing service. • The purpose of this study was to investigate possible differences in the behavior problems of peer-rejected and peer-neglected children in relation to parent and teacher perspectives. The subjects in this study were 239 children and their parents(fathers:37, mothers: 155. father+mother pairs:47) and 10 teachers in the fifth grade of a public elementary school located in Seoul. The sociometric assessment mothods were positive and negative peer nominations. On the basis of this sociometric assessment. children were assigned to one of 4 categories in degree of popularity:65 popular, 53 average. 62 rejected. and 59 neglected children. Parents and teachers rated child behavior on the Achenbach and Edelbrock Child Behavior Checklist(CBCL) for parents and Teacher's Report Form(TRF) were used. The obtained data were analyzed by one-way MANOVA and Duncan Multiple Range Test. Rejected children were found to exhibit more behavior problems than neglected, popular, or average children. Neglected children, however, did not exhibit more behavior problems than chidren of average status.

  • The present study sought to examine parent-child relational factors associated with young child's language abilities according to socioeconomic status. To do so, the survey responses of 2,269 parents of 0- to 5- year-olds, taken from research on the Actual Condition of Korean Children and Youth were analyzed. The results were as follows : (1) Low-income families had significantly fewer toys related to literacy than middle and upper-income families. (2) There were fewer instances of parent-child play interactions as well as lower scores of parenting styles and beliefs in low-income families than in middle and upper-income families. (3) Although there was no difference in terms of language abilities from 0- to 1-year-old children according to socioeconomic status, 2-, 3-, 4- and 5-year-old children from low-income families exhibited significantly lower language scores than children from middle- and upper-income families. (4) Toys related to literacy and parent-child relational factors were positively related to children's language abilities. (5) It can be further argued that toys related to literacy and parent-child relational factors clearly predict children's language abilities.

  • Purpose: This study was to investigate the stress of parents while they were rearing their children. Method: This study reviewed the preceding research related to parents' stress and breeding stress with consideration of modem society, family system and parents' role. Results: In the parent-child relationship, parents feel stressed when they found it difficult to come up with an expectation to the parents' role of rearing child. Therefore, considering the health of parents and children, it is important to mediate parents who are under stress. Moreover, since parents cannot handle this problem all alone, it should be discussed and solved not only by individual but also by family, and further by social context. The parent-child relationship in early infancy is a core element to the development of an individual. Parents have influence on a child's development the most and play a big role. In particular, many parents these days believe that parent-child relationship is changing in a democratic way and a couple breeds their child together. However, in reality, the relationship has not been changed and is even regarded as more difficult situation than it was in the traditional society. Parents are oppressed with not being adapted to social changes and advance, and child also feels the same. Conclusion: Parents need education and support for child rearing without having any stresses. Health care provider consider this issues and to build a healthy parent-child relationship by helping parents.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the mediating roles of children interpersonal relations and mental health in the relationship between parent-child relationships and school life happiness, and the differences between single-parent and two-parent families, using structural equation modeling. Data were obtained from the 2013(second-wave) year of the Korean Educational Longitudinal Study. This study selected 6,643 elementary school 6th-grade students(756 from single-parent families and 5,887 from two-parent families). Data were examined with structural equation modeling and multi-group analysis using AMOS 18.0, and mediating effects were tested using the Sobel test. The results were as follows; First, the single-parent children reported lower levels of interpersonal relations, mental health, and school life happiness than the two-parent children. Second, interpersonal relations and mental health did play a mediating role in the relationship between parent-child relationships and school life happiness. Third, as a result of examining for total effect, the variable that most influenced school life happiness of children was interpersonal relations. • Maternal depression is known to have important negative effects on mother, child and mother-child relationship. To review current research evidence of association between maternal depression and their children's health and development, relevant studies were identified using Medline and Kiss(Korean studies Information Service System). The majority of research has reported that children of mother with depression are at risk for impaired physical functioning, growth and developmental delays, and behavioral problems compared to general population. From these studies, it is suggested that these kinds of studies are necessary in this country to examine the relation between maternal depression and children's health and development. Recommendations are included for future research and screening programs for maternal depression.

  • Purpose of this research is to analyze process through which poverty influences in child abuse and neglect. Data come from Seoul Panel Study of Children 2004-2005 and analysis method is Structural Equation Modeling. Results demonstrate that poverty has a direct influence on child abuse and neglect. Also poverty influences through process variable such as depression of parent and family relationship. And depression of parent influences child abuse and neglect through family relation. finding from this study suggest that societal support for poor families can prevent child abuse and neglect.
