  • In this paper. a new wavelet packet image coder is proposed for images that include many high-frequency components using the relation between subbands. The new algorithm presents parent-child relationship for reducing image reconstruction error using relations between individual frequency subbands. By parent-child relationship, every coefficient is partitioned and encoded for the zerotree structure. It demonstrates higher PSNR under the same bit rate. These results show that the encoding process of the proposed coder is more accurate than the conventional ones for images that include many high-frequency elements.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the prevalence of children's somatic symptoms and the relationships among parent and child variables such as parenting attitude, children's anxiety, emotional expressiveness and somatic symptoms. The subjects were 523 6th grade students in four elementary schools located in Seoul, Busan and Daejeon. All subjects were tested with the Korean version of Children's Somatization Inventory (K-CSI), Parental Rearing Attitude Inventory, State-Trait Anxiety for Children (STAIC), and The Emotional Expressiveness Questionnaire. The collected data were analyzed by the frequency and percentage of somatic symptoms the children had experienced during the last 2 weeks; Pearson's correlation and multiple regression were used for the selected data of 10 somatic symptoms which were experienced by over 10% of the children. The results are summarized as follows: First, abdominal pain, headache, dizziness, and memory failure, in that order, were experienced in over 20% of the children. Second, children's somatic symptoms had significant relations with mothers' and fathers' loving-denial attitudes and their anxiety and emotional expressiveness. Third, children's somatic symptoms were influenced by their anxiety and emotional expressiveness, but not by parenting attitude.

  • The study examined the relations of peer acceptance to children's temperament, maternal self-efficacy, and paternal involvement. A total of 405 children (189 popular children, 216 unpopular children; aged 5 years old) and their parents were studied. The children's peer acceptance was measured by peer nomination and the mother's parenting efficacy and father's child rearing involvement were assessed by a parent reported questionnaire. In the results, popular children recorded higher scores than unpopular children in sociability, activity, maternal parenting efficacy, and paternal child rearing involvement.

Mothers were female international marriage immigrant from China, Philippines, and Vietnam. The participants were 374mothers of young children and teachers of the children in Busan and Gyungnam, Korea. Questionnaires were based on Choe and Chung (2001), Shin(1996), Lee (1996), Hong (1995), and Han(1996). Structural equation modeling indicated that mother's parenting self-efficacy and parenting behavior were significant mediators of the relation between mother's perceived social support and child's problem behavior. The results will be useful for parent training programs for female international marriage immigrant.

  • Purpose: To determine the effects of a child and parent program on developing social skills for preventing violent behaviors in children aged 60~72 months through a specially developed pre and posttest, control group, quasi-experimental study. Methods: A social skills development program based on Gardner's Multiple Intelligence Theory was used. The data were collected using the Social Skills Assessment Scale (SSAS), a Chart to Monitor Verbal and Behavioral Violence in Children, the Parental Attitude Scale and the Parent Interview Form. This quasi-experimental study that included a pretest, posttest, and control group had a sample comprising 67 children and parents, with 36 in the experimental group, and 31 in the control group. Results: Over a six-month period, while the social skill scores of the children in the experimental and control groups increased, their violent behaviors decreased (p<.050). Increase in social skill scores and decrease in violent behaviors were higher in the experimental than in the control group children (p<.050). The parents in the experimental group stated that they had started to empathize with their children, using "I" language, and applied rules more consistently after the program. Conclusion: This program was successful in preventing violent behaviors in children through the development of social skills. Hence, it can be effectively implemented through a teacher/nurse collaboration.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the difference of the father's and mother's reactions to their children's negative emotions, relations among the children's variables, parent's variables, and parent's reactions. The subjects selected were 183 mothers and 183 fathers with children aged three to five-years-old, from a childcare center and kindergarten in Kwang-ju. Parental emotion-related practices regarding children's negative emotions were assessed with an adaptation of the CCNES(Fabes et al, 1990) that was modified by Kim Hee-Jung(1994). Descriptives, Pearson's correlation coefficient, were used for data analysis by using the SPSS 15.0 program. The results of this study can be summarized as follows: First, fathers and mothers used more positive reactions than negative reactions when their children showed negative emotions. The mothers were significantly higher than fathers on encouragement of expression, punitive, and distress reactions. Second, the children's age and gender, parent's age, level of education and income were negatively and positively correlated to the father's and mother's reactions to their children's negative emotions.

Methods: Participants were 14 mothers in the first phase, 10 mothers in the second phase, and 8 mothers in the third phase. Data were collected from stories shared during the learning community activities. The mothers' experiences were analyzed according to qualitative analysis procedures. Results: Mothers' experiences of participating in the training of consultant for building early childhood educational community were categorized into three themes and seven sub-themes. The first theme was "self as a parent" including "looking inside myself in the parent-child relationships" and "looking inside myself in the relations with other mothers". The second theme was "self as a member of the community" which consisted of "sharing emotions through ritual", "forming communitarian identity through hospitality and solidarity" and "growing as a social mother". The third theme was "self as a educational community consultant" out of which emerged "setting up shared visions", "building practical community competence", and "creating fields of community implementation". Conclusion: The results suggested there are implications for the effective practices of building an early childhood education community and the direction and methodology of parent education.
