  • This paper describes a scheduling support system for a plant where the machine environment may be modeled as non-identical parallel machine lines (NPML). That is, there are a number of stages in series with various different-capability-machines at each stage. Arriving continuously are jobs with their specific due dates, processing times and candidate processing machines. We’ve developed a real-time scheduling module in conjunction with a supporting production information system which supplies necessary data to the module. This scheduling module is one of the 9 modules in this system, and is composed of both a scheduling interface and a production monitoring interface. This module allows users to generate many candidate schedules by selecting their business policies. The selective arguments which are available consist of allocation costs, batch sizes and machine selection intervals. They are now being implemented at a powder metallurgy plant.

  • This paper considers a parallel-machine scheduling problem with job release times and sequence-dependent setup times. The objective of this problem is to determine the allocation policy of jobs and the scheduling policy of machines so as to minimize the weighted sum of setup times, delay times, and tardy times. A mathematical model for optimal solution is derived and a meta heuristic algorithm based on the improved ant colony system is proposed in this paper. The performance of the meta heuristic algorithm is evaluated through compare with optimal solutions using randomly generated several examples.

  • We consider the problem of scheduling n jobs on m machines with the objective of minimizing makespan. Each job cannot be eligible to all the machines but to its consecutively eligible set of machines. For this problem, a 2-approximation algorithm, MFFH, is developed. In addition, an example is presented to show the tightness of the algorithm.

  • In this study, we consider an order promising problem at parallel machine shops where orders arrive dynamically. We develop methods for the problem, which instantly quote the due-dates of arrived orders. In this study, we first propose methods which can estimate flow times of orders, in which the current and future inventory status as well as the specific scheduling scheme used in the shop are taken into account, and then the due-dates are set by the order promising methods using the estimation results. The quoted due-dates of orders are compared with the actual completion times of those which are obtained from the simulation runs. The series of computational experiments show that the superior performance of the proposed methods in terms of the accuracy of due-date quotation.

  • We consider the problem of scheduling identical jobs with sequence-independent setup times on parallel machines. The objective is to minimize total completion times. We present the pseudopolynomial-time algorithm for the case with a fixed number of machines and an efficient approximation algorithm for our problem with identical setup times, which is known to be NP-hard even for the two-machine case.

  • This study deals with an Excel-based scheduling system for a small and medium sized manufacturing factory without sufficient capability for managing full-scale information systems. The factory has the bottleneck with identical machines and unique batching characteristics. The scheduling problem is formulated as a variation of the parallel-machine scheduling system. It can be solved by a two-phase method: the first phase with an ant colony optimization (ACO) heuristic for order grouping and the second phase with a mixed integer programming (MIP) algorithm for scheduling groups on machines.

  • This paper proposes an algorithm for the Unrelated Parallel Machine Scheduling Problem(UPMSP) without setup times, aiming to minimize total tardiness. As an NP-hard problem, the UPMSP is hard to get an optimal solution. Consequently, practical scenarios are solved by relying on operator's experiences or simple heuristic approaches. The proposed algorithm has adapted two methods: a policy network method, based on Transformer to compute the correlation between individual jobs and machines, and another method to train the network with a reinforcement learning algorithm based on the REINFORCE with Baseline algorithm. The proposed algorithm was evaluated on randomly generated problems and the results were compared with those obtained using CPLEX, as well as three scheduling algorithms. This paper confirms that the proposed algorithm outperforms the comparison algorithms, as evidenced by the test results.

  • This paper proposes a heuristic scheduling algorithm to satisfy the customer's due date in the production process under make to order environment. The goal is to achieve the machine scheduling in the transformer winding process, in which consists of parallel machines with different machine performances. The winding is important production process in the transformer manufacturing company. The efficiency of the winding machines is different according to the voltage capacity and the winding type. This paper introduces a heuristic approach in the transformer winding process where the objective function is to minimize the total tardiness of jobs over due dates. The numerical experiment is illustrated to evaluate the performance.

  • This paper presents job scheduling for non-identical parallel machines using Simulated Annealing (SA). The scheduling problem accounts for allotting work parts of L lots into M parallel machines, where each lot is composed of N homogeneous jobs. Some lots may have different jobs while every job within each lot has common due date. Each machine has its own performance and set up time according to the features of the machine, and also by job types. A meta-heuristic, SA, is applied in this study to determine the job sequences of the scheduling problem so as to minimize total tardiness of due. The SA method is compared with a conventional steepest descent(SD) algorithm that is a typical tool for finding local optimum. The comparison shows the SA is much better than the SD in terms tardiness while SA takes longer , but acceptable time.
