The activities of antioxidation and alcohol dehydrogenase in hibitionin methanol extracts of thirty two medical herbs were tested using the method of DPPH activity, nitrite scavenging effect and alcohol dehydrogenase assay in vitro. In DPPH method, Eugenia caryophyllata, Thea sinensis, Paeonia suffruticosa, Alnus japonica showed over 90 % of free radical scavenging activities. The nitrite scavenging ability appeared Zanthoxylum bungeanum, Alnus japonica, Thea sinensis, Hovenia dulcis(cortex) and Illicium verum showed the high value. In connection with in vivo alcohol metabolism, thirteen medicinal herbs were screened for inhibition. As a reasult, we found significant inhibition of ADH by methanolic extracts of Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Pueraria thunbergiana(radix), Alnus japonica. These results indicate that the antioxidative effect was strongly related with alcohol dehydrogenase inhibitor; Thea sinensis and Alnus japonica.
Methanol extracts were prepared from 32 medicinal herbs of the extracts were tested their microbial inhibition activities against food borne pathogens and/or food poisoning microorganisms, food-related bacteria and yeast. Methanol extracts of Cinnamomum cassia, Paeonia suffruticosa, Alnus japonica, Eugenio caryophyllata and Illicium verum exhibited antimicrobial activity for the microorganisms tested, except lactic acid bacteria and yeast. Minimum inhibitory concentrations(MIC) were about 5 mg/mL for Bacillus subtilis, Staphylococcus epidermidis and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Cell growth of lactic acid bacteria was inhibitied, but greatly on Leuconostoc mesenteroides. The phenolic compound contents were 10.98 mg/g, 10.31 mg/g, 8.55 mg/g and 6.69 mg/g in Thea sinensis, Eugenia caryophyllata, Alnus japonica and Artenisia capillaris, respectively. Antimicrobial activity appeared to be related to phenol compound content in medicinal herbs. The methanol extracts of medicinal herbs could be suitable for the development of a food preservative.
Now many sustitution and false articles is used in korea instead of mudanpi. To use mudanpi correctly, we will make a quilitative certificational plan of mudanpi to investigate all of lieraturea, records and documents. And we could reach conclusions as folloews. 1. Source Source of mudanpi is cortex of Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews(Family:Ranunculaceae) in korea and china. It needs an attention to distinguish into because there is a substitute and a rank in china. 2. process We have to work before harvesting fresh roots is dry perfectly. If outer skin dried moisture a little, cut off outer skin vertically at sunny day, remove a heart and sever, immedietly dry. When working, we have to take care of because of easy discoloration with moisture. 3. Quality (1) Functional standards A diameter is large, it do not exist a heart of wood, a bark is thick and powdery. Section surface is light white color and rich odor with many light crystals. (2) Physicochemical stamdards We think that it needs to raise a contant of paeonol at all kinds of testing standards. A contant of paeonol is at least more than 2.5%. A part of wood indicate a heart of wood which has no medical effects, but is a relatively heavy part. So a standart of wood must be lowered sifnificantly less than 1.0%. It must be content of ash is less than 6.0%, Content of acid-nonsoluble ash is less than 1.0%. A fixed quantity of paeonol is more than 2.5%. Contens of heavy metal has to detect less than 30 ppm and there is no reminding agriculural medince.
In this study, the author experimented the influence of five herbal medicines, which are Lonicera japonica Thunb, Paeonia suffruticosa Andr., Fraxinus rhynchophylla Hance, Gardenia jasminoides Ellis, Scutellaria baicalensis George which are called 'Chungyulyak(淸熱藥)' on drug metabolizing enzyme cytochrome P450 3A4 in Human Liver Microsome. Above all, the reason for this study is that herbal medicines can be assumed that herbs might have interactions with drugs, other herbs, alcohol and chemicals whether those are much better synergy effects than expected effects when the medicine was treated alone or not. As a result, we showed that all of five traditional herbal medicines had no CYP 3A4 inhibition effect on 10, 20, 30, 40, $50{\mu}g/m{\ell}$ doses in Human Liver Microsome. However, this result are mostly not enough to prove that PMT has a CYP 3A4 inhibition effect. Moreover, it is not that those rates showed that those herbal medicines have CYP 3A4 induction effect. In conclusion, the result could support that those herbal medicines are more safe than chemical drugs even if this is the basic step to prove that result. Therefore, more specific studies to support this result, which are Kinetic study, cell and animal study then finally until clinical research, are required.

The pharmacological effects of medicinal remedies traditionally used in Asian countries for improving the blood circulation were examined on isolated rat thoracic aorta strips in organ baths. Each experimental medicine was consecutively extracted under reflux with water. Of 17 plants, Curcuma longa (CL) having the strongest acute relaxant activity in endothelium-intact arteries, Mucunae caulis (MC), Cirsium pendulum (CP), Rumex longiflius (RL), Paeonia suffruticosa (PS), Curcuma zedoaria (CZ), Scirpus maritimus (SM), Siphonostegia chinensis (SC), Leonurs sibiricus (LS) and Typha orientalis (TO) were showing dose-dependent relaxant activity. Long-term relaxant effects were showed in Curcuma aromatia (CA), MC, CP, RL, PS, Potulacae grandiflorae (PG), CZ, Panax notoginseng (PN), Achyranthes japonica (AJ), CL, SC, Lycoppus lucidus (LL) and Corydalis turtschaninovii (CT). In endothelium-injury test using carbachol, CL, SC, MC, RL and PS which are having the acute vasorelaxing activity and CA and CT which are not showing vasorelaxaing activity were damaged to endothelium. As a result of this study, the possibility that a part of medicinal remedy may contribute to the beneficial effects in blood circulation was proposed, but inter-individual variation has been observed. Also, further studies on the vasorelaxant effects of these remedies are still required.
Objectives The purpose of this study is to analyze recent clinical studies on treatment for precocious puberty. Methods 28 clinical studies from January 2009 to December 2016 about precocious puberty from the China Academic Journal (CAJ), China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), were selected and reviewed: 22 case control studies and 6 case series. Results The main traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) treatment was the herbal decoctions and granules. The frequently used herbs were root of Bupleurum falcatum (柴胡), fruit of Prunella vulgaris var. aleutica (夏枯草), root stem of Anemarrhena asphodeloides (知母), dried fungus nucleus of Poria cocos (茯苓), Rehmannia glutinosa var. purpurea (生地黃), peony Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews (牧丹皮), bark of Phellodendron amurense (黃柏), roots of a plant Paeoniae lactiflora (白芍藥). On the other hand, the main western medicine (WM) for precocious puberty was Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist (GnRHa). Total effective rate of the TCM group was 62.96-100%, that of the WM group was 36.6-93.3% and that of the TCM-WM group was 77.8-93.75%. Conclusions Traditional Chinese medicine has been shown as an effective treatment for precocious puberty. These research results can be utilized in other clinical studies and in treatment of precocious puberty.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the possibility of herbal medicine complex extract (NI-01), which were prepared from 6 natural materials (Cinnamomum cassia Blume, Lonicerae Flos, Paeonia suffruticosa Andrews, Arctium lappa Linne, Schzandra chinesis Bailon, Elsholtzia ciliata Hylander), as a functional material for inhibition of atopic dermatitis. anti-oxidative activity was confirmed by measuring DPPH electron donating ability and ABTS+ radical scavenging ability. Cytotoxicity and NO inhibition were measured using RAW 264.7 cells to confirm anti-inflammatory efficacy. The test substance was orally administered to the pruritus-induced ICR mice to confirm the inhibition of pruritus. The bovine cornea opacity and permeability (BCOP) assay was performed to confirm safety for irritation. NI-01 showed high antioxidant activity in DPPH and ABTS+ methods. In the anti-inflammatory effect tests with RAW 264.7 cells, NO production was inhibited at NI-01 concentrations of 50 (14.9%) and 100 (4.2%) ㎍/mL, which indicated that the anti-inflammatory effect was increased in a concentration-dependent manner. NI-01 also showed anti-itching effect after inducing of itching by compound 48/80 in ICR mice. NI-01 was proved to be a non-irritant substance in BCOP assay. The results of this study suggested that the herbal medicine combined extract (NI-01) has high antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-itching effects, and safety for irritation. Therefore, herbal medicine complex extract (NI-01) is thought to be highly applicable for the inhibitory ingredients of the atopic dermatitis.

We have studied the anti-diabetic effects of medicinal plant water extracts on hepatic glucose-regulating enzymes such as glucokinase (GK) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC). $\alpha$-Glucosidase inhibitor is usually used to prevent and treat type II diabetes; thus, anti-$\alpha$-glucosidase activity of medicinal plant water extracts was assayed. The hepatic cytosol faction of a type II diabetic animal (Goto-Kakizaki rat) was used in GK and ACC activity assays. The medicinal plants were Lycium chinense (JGP), Discorea japonica Thunb. (SY), Pyrus pyrifolia (YSB), Cornus officinalis (SSY), Paeonia suffruticosa ANDR. (MDP), Cordyceps militaris (DCH), and Acanthopanax senticosus (GSO). JGP, SY, YSB, and SSY water extracts increased the hepatic GK activity and all medicinal plant water extracts led to an increase in hepatic ACC activity. YSB, SSY, MDP, and GSO water extracts showed significantly higher anti-$\alpha$-glucosidase activity than control samples. The highest anti-$\alpha$-glucosidase activity was observed in GSO water extract and the anti-$\alpha$-glucoside activity was higher than that of Acarbose (reference $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibitor). We suggest that JGP, SY, YSB, and SSY water extracts may exert an anti-diabetic effect by enhancing the glucose metabolism and that YSB, MDP and GSO may be used as natural $\alpha$-glucosidase inhibitors in type II diabetic conditions. Increased ACC activity by plant water extracts may provide additional anti-diabetic effect.
Angiotensin converting enzyme(ACE) belongs to the class of zinc protease and plays an important role in the regulation of blood pressure. In this experiment, we investigated the inhibitory activities of medicinal plant extracts on ACE. Fifty medicinal plants were selected and the extracts were prepared by refluxing with 70% methanol. Among the extracts, eleven medicinal plant extracts such as Sedum sarmentosum Bunge, Petasites japonicus(s.et z.) Max, Rubus coreanus, Morus bombycis Koidz, Acorus calamus var. angustatus, Glycyrhiza glabra, Equisetum hyemale, Portulaca oleracea L., Prunella vulgaris var. lilacina Nakai, Sorbus commixta Hedl, Allium thunbergii showed more than 50% inhibitory activities, and Paeonia suffruticosa Andr., lnula helenium, Acanthopanax senticosus Harms, Dendrobium moniliforme, Juglans mandshurica, Zizyphus jujuba, Leonurus artemisia, Aster scaber Thunb, Vitex rotundifolia, Platycodon grandiflorum, Prunus persica, Ligularia fischeri showed $40{\sim}49%$ inhibitory activities. Therefore these extracts which contain high ACE inhibitory activities may be useful as antihypertension agents and to the treatment of hypertension.

Estrogen like activities were evaluated using ethanol and hot water extracts of herbal medicines by using an in vitro detection system. Bokryung (Poria cocos), Sanyak (root of Dioscorea batatas) and Mokdanpi (root skin of Paeonia suffruticosa) represented statistically significant estrogen-like activities (p<0.001), while Omija (fruit of Schizandra chinensis), Taeksa (root of Alisma canaliculatum A. BR.), Jihwang (root of Rhemannia glutinosa), and Sansuyu (fruit of Cornus officinalis) did not. Estrogen-like activities of Bokryung hot water extract (500 ${\mu}g/ml$) and ethanol extract (50 ${\mu}g/ml$) were almost same as that of a C M $17{\beta}$-estradiol. Furthermore, estrogen-like activities of ethanol extracts (500 ${\mu}g/ml$) of Bokryung and Mokdanpi were stronger than that of $10^{-7}$ M $17{\beta}$-estradiol. These results suggest that Bokryung, Sanyak and Mokdanpi show estrogen-like activities. Especially, Sanyak and Mokdanpi represented promotive effect on the proliferation of MC3T3-E1 osteoblastic cells. Bokryung, Sanyak and Mokdanpi also exhibited superior inhibitory effect on the viability of RAW 264.7 cells. In conclusion, these three herbal medicines might be interpreted as candidates for the further study or development of functional foods or medicine to prevent or avoid postmenopausal symptoms of women.
