This paper deals with experimental evaluation methods for high speed judder on the brake-caliper system. Firstly, two types of brake caliper systems due to the wheel vibration was evaluated. Secondly, the high-speed judder of the brake was also investigated using the subjective rating evaluation in the high-speed road test. These experimental evaluations were carried out by changing the materials of brake pad and the specifications of the brake-corner module. Based upon the test results, a new specification of the brake pad, $15{\times}5$ vertical chamfer, was proposed. The new brake pad showed 3 points, 60 %, improvement in the subjective-rating evaluation comparing with conventional one. Besides, we need to decide properly with judder characteristic of pad material and have to carefully take into consideration other design parameters; caliper, disc, and the braking performance, durability, squeal noise.
In this study, a three-pad gas foil journal bearing with a diameter of 40 mm and an axial length of 35 mm was modeled to predict the static and dynamic performances with regard to an increasing mechanical preload. The Reynolds equation for an isothermal and isoviscous ideal gas was coupled with a simple elastic foundation foil model to calculate the hydrodynamic pressure solution iteratively. In the prediction results, the journal eccentricity, journal attitude angle, and minimum film thickness decreased, but the friction torque increased with the preload. A quick comparison implied a lower load capacity but higher stability for a three-pad gas foil bearing compared to a one-pad gas foil journal bearing. The direct stiffness coefficients increased with the preload, but the cross-coupled stiffness coefficients decreased. The direct damping coefficient increased in the horizontal direction but decreased in the vertical direction as the preload increased. These model predictions will be useful as a benchmark against experimental test data.
This study shows the effect of the thermal boundary condition around the tilting pad journal bearing on the static and dynamic characteristics of the bearing through a high-precision numerical model. In many cases, it is very difficult to predict or measure the exact thermal boundary conditions around bearings at the operating site of a turbomachine, not even in a laboratory. The purpose of this study is not to predict the thermal boundary conditions around the bearing, but to find out how the performance of the bearing changes under different thermal boundary conditions. Lubricating oil, bearing pads and shafts were modeled in three dimensions using the finite element method, and the heat transfer between these three elements and the resulting thermal deformation were considered. The Generalized Reynolds equation and three-dimensional energy equation that can take into account the viscosity change in the direction of the film thickness are connected and analyzed by the relationship between viscosity and temperature. The numerical model was written in in-house code using MATLAB, and a parallel processing algorithm was used to improve the analysis speed. Constant temperature and convection temperature conditions are used as the thermal boundary conditions. Notably, the conditions around the bearing pad, rather than the temperature boundary conditions around the shaft, have a greater influence on the performance changes of the bearing.

This paper aims to examine the status of sizing specifications for disposable sanitary pads on the market and to offer information on product design that reflect the requests of consumer by gathering opinion through the practical experience of consumers. Seventy-six varieties of sanitary pads on market are measured and the evaluations of wearing comfort were investigated by the questionnaire and interview for sixty three varieties of sanitary pads. As a result, they were classified into five sizes related with length but vaguely related with thickness and width. Thickness is distinguished by the compressibility that is marked as slim or ultra slim by the same brand. However, there is no sizing consistency for all products. The result shows that there is some confusion for consumers to choose desired sizes, In addition, the perception of wearing is categorized into four factors that are product performance, size and fit, wearing feeling and margin of action, and adhesive property and wrapping. The manufacturing specifications for the sanitary pads on domestic market, the requests of consumers for sanitary pad design modifications, and proposals for follow-up studies were figured out through this research.
Ethanolic extracts of T. cordifolia and C. asiatica were evaluated for immunostimulatory effect in mice against sheep RBCs as antigen by three models viz. delayed type hypersensitivity reaction, ercent change in neutrophil count and haemagglutination titre. Immunostimulatory effect in the presence of immunosuppressant agent, cyclophosphamide (100 mg/kg, i.p.) was also investigated. T. cordifolia and C. asiatica significantly (p < 0.001, p < 0.05 respectively) enhanced foot pad thickness when measured after 24 hours of sheep RBC antigen challenge. Both the plant materials increased foot pad thickness even after being subjected to immunosuppressant exposure. T. cordifolia revealed enhanced neutrophil counts, while C. asiatica had no significant effect on neutrophil counts. T. cordifolia exhibited significantly (P < 0.01) elevated neutrophil levels even in the presence of cyclophosphamide administration. Both the plants exhibited humoral antibody response, as haemagglutination titre values were significantly high as compared to control. T. cordifolia and C. asiatica could combat immunosuppressant effect of cyclophosphamide (P < 0.01). This suggests that T. cordifolia and C. asiatica can be regarded as biological response modifiers and can be utilized for the development of immunostimulating agent among plant sources.

Many animals possess on their legs adhesive pads, which have undergone evolutionary optimization to be able to attach to variable substrates and to control adhesive forces during locomotion. Insect adhesive pads are either relatively smooth or densely covered with specialized adhesive hairs. Theoretical models predict that adhesion can be increased by splitting the contact zone into many microscopic, elastic subunits, which provides a functional explanation for the widespread 'hairy' design. In many hairy and all smooth attachment systems, the adhesive contact is mediated by a thin film of liquid secretion between the cuticle and the substrate. By using interference reflection microscopy (IRM), the thickness and viscosity of the secretion film was estimated in Weaver ants (Oecophylla smaragdina). 'Footprint' droplets deposited on glass are hydrophobic and form low contact angles. IRM of insect pads in contact showed that the adhesive liquid is an emulsion consisting of hydrophilic, volatile droplets dispersed in a persistent, hydrophobic phase. I tested predictions derived from film thickness and viscosity by measuring friction forces of Weaver ants on a smooth substrate. The measured friction forces were much greater than expected assuming a homogenous film between the pad and the surface. The findings indicate that the rubbery pad cuticle directly interacts with the substrate. To achieve intimate contact between the cuticle and the surface, secretion must drain away, which may be facilitated by microfolds on the surface of smooth insect pads. I propose a combined wet adhesion/rubber friction model of insect surface attachment that explains both the presence of a significant static friction component and the velocity-dependence of sliding friction.
The pad pitch of modern radio frequency integrated circuits is in the order of few tens of micrometers. Connecting a large number of high-speed I/Os to the outside world with good signal fidelity at low cost is an extremely challenging task. To cope with this requirement, we need reflection-free transmission lines from an on-chip pad to on-board SMA connectors. Such a transmission line is very hard to design due to the difference in on-chip and on-board feature size and the requirement for extremely large bandwidth. In this paper, we propose the use of narrow tracks close to chip and wide tracks away from the chip. This narrow-to-wide transition in width results in impedance discontinuity. A step change in substrate thickness is utilized to cancel the effect of the width discontinuity, thus achieving a reflection-free microstrip. To verify the concept, several microstrips were designed on multilayer FR4 PCB without any additional manufacturing steps. The TDR measurements reveal that the impedance variation is less than 3 ${\Omega}$ for a 50 ${\Omega}$ microstrip and S11 better than -9 dB for the frequency range 1 GHz to 6 GHz when the width changes from 165 ${\mu}m$ to 940 ${\mu}m$, and substrate thickness changes from 100 ${\mu}m$ to 500 ${\mu}m$.

Package crack caused by the soldering process in the surface mounting plastic package is evaluated by applying the maximum energy release rate criterion. It could be shown that the crack propagation from the lower edge of the ie pad is easily occurred at the maximum temperature during the soldering process, where the pressure acting on the crack surface is assumed by the saturated vapor pressure at maximum temperature. The package crack formation depends on various parameters such as chip size, relative thickness, material properties, the moisture content and soldering temperature etc. The quantitative measure of the effects of the parameters could be easily obtained by using the taguchi's method which requires only a few kinds of combinations with such parameters. From the results, it could be obtained that the more significant parameters to effect the package reliability are the orders of Young's modulus, die pad size, down set, chip thickness and maximum soldering temperature.
Objectives: We evaluated the association between common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT), brachialankle pulse wave velocity (baPWV), carotid plaque, and peripheral arterial disease (PAD) as indicators of macroangiopathy and diabetic retinopathy as an indicator of microangiopathy in type 2 diabetic patients. Methods: We analyzed 605 type 2 diabetic patients registered at a public health center in Korea. Following overnight fasting, venous blood and urine samples were collected and analyzed. The CCA-IMT, levels of carotid plaque, baPWV, and ankle-brachial index (ABI) of the subjects were assessed. We used non-mydriatic fundus photography to diagnose diabetic retinopathy. Multiple logistic regression analyses were used to evaluate the association between macroangiopathy and diabetic retinopathy. CCA-IMT and baPWV were divided into tertiles: CCA-IMT, 0.39 to 0.65 mm, 0.66 to 0.78 mm, and 0.79 to 1.30 mm; baPWV, 9.9 to 15.8 m/s, 15.9 to 18.9 m/s, and 19.0 to 38.0 m/s. Results: The association between baPWV and diabetic retinopathy remained significant after adjustment, with an increasing odds ratio (OR) in the second tertile (OR, 2.41; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.27 to 4.55) and the third tertile (OR, 4.63; 95% CI, 2.33 to 9.21). No significant differences were observed in carotid plaque, PAD, and each tertile of CCA-IMT. Conclusions: BaPWV was associated with diabetic retinopathy, while CCA-IMT, carotid plaque, and PAD were not. This study suggests that the association between macroangiopathy and microangiopathy may be attributable to functional processes rather than structural processes within the vascular system.
