  • The paper proposes a new multilevel variable output voltage AC/DC Converter for power supply of power amplifiers used in underwater acoustic sensors. The proposed multilevel variable output voltage AC/DC Converter is composed of two parts. One as the input section is the high efficiency phase-shifted PWM full bridge DC-DC converter to get multiport power sources. The other as the output section is composed of two flying-capacitor 3-level DC-DC converters and a diode bridge circuit to get fast-response and multilevel variable output voltage for an envelope amplifier. Also the paper suggests the detailed circuit topology and design guideline of multilevel variable output voltage AC/DC converter. It also proposes the power balanced control method between 3-level converters and the voltage balanced algorithm for flying capacitors. Its characteristics should be verified by the detailed simulation results. It is anticipated that the proposed converter will be used very well for power amplifiers used in underwater acoustic sensors.

  • Advances in FPGA technology have enabled fast real-time simulation of power converters, filters and loads. FPGA based HIL (Hardware-In-the-Loop) simulators have revolutionized control hardware and software development for power electronics. Common time step sizes in the order of 100ns are sufficient for simulating switching frequency current and voltage ripples. In order to keep the time step as small as possible, ideal switching function models are often used to simulate the phase legs. This often produces inferior results when simulating the discontinuous conduction mode (DCM) and disabled operational states. Therefore, the corresponding measurement and protection units cannot be tested properly. This paper describes a new solution for this problem utilizing a discrete-time PI controller. The PI controller simulates the proper DC and low frequency AC components of the phase leg voltage during disabled operation. It also retains the advantage of fast real-time execution of switch-based models when an accurate simulation of high frequency junction capacitor oscillations is not necessary.

  • This paper presents a new 3.3-1 V synchronous buck DC/DC converter that employs CMOS operational transconductance amplifiers (OTAs) as circuit-building blocks. An error amplifier OTA in a PWM circuit is compensated for to improve temperature stability. The temperature coefficient of the transconductance gain of the compensated OTA is less than $150\;ppm/^{\circ}C\;over\;0-100^{\circ}C$. The HSPICE simulation results of the $0.3{\mu}m$ standard CMOS technology show that the efficiency of the proposed converter is as high as 80% in the load current range of 40-125 mA. These results show that the proposed converter is adequate for use in battery-operated systems.

  • DC/DC switching power converters are commonly used to generate a regulated DC output voltage with high efficiency. The DC/DC converter is composed of a MOSFET (metal-oxide semiconductor field effect transistor), a PWM-IC (pulse width modulation-integrated circuit) controller, inductor, capacitor, etc. It is shown that the variation of threshold voltage and the breakdown voltage in the electrical characteristics of MOSFET occurs by radiation effects in TID (Total Ionizing Dose) testing at the low energy ${\gamma}$ rays using $^{60}Co$, and 5 heavy ions make the gate of MOSFET broken in SEGR (Single Event Gate Rupture) testing. TID testing on MOSFET is accomplished up to the total dose of 40 krad, and the cross section($cm^2$) versus LET(MeV/mg/$cm^2$) in the MOSFET operation is studied at SEGR testing after implementation of the controller board.

  • Matrix converters have been studied for eliminating dc link of conventional converter-inverter system, and various undulation strategy have been proposed. Therefore, matrix converter have no energy storage component except for small ac later for the elimination of switching ripple, and can be made compact and highly reliable compare with the do link inverter system. Matrix converter, however, directly connected the input and the output terminals by bidirectional static switch. As a result if the input voltage are asymmetrical, and contain harmonics, the influence of the distortions directly appear on the output terminal. This problem is a major obstacle to the matrix converter. A new control method using average comparison strategy have been proposed in this paper. This control method realizes sinusoidal input and output current unity input displacement factor regardless of load power factor. Moreover, compensation of the asymmetrical and/or harmonic containing input voltage is automatically realized, and calculation time of control function is reduced.

  • Fuel cell power system is one of the most promising energy source for the alternative energy because it has unique advantages such as high energy density, no power drop during operation, and feasible to make compact size. However, due to very low response time, fuel cell is difficult to correspond to drastic load changes and start-up operation. For solving these problem, fuel cell power system must include energy storage device such as Li-Poly battery or super capacitor. Therefore, bi-directional DC-DC converter must be required for this storage device and fuel cell-PCS control. This paper presents a design and modeling of the bi-directional DC/DC converter. Firstly, we present modeling the boost and buck mode of the bi-directional converter through both PWM switch model and state space averaging technique. Secondly, in order to minimize output ripple and transient response overshoot, we have two identical DC-DC converters interleaved and adopt two-loop voltage-current controller. The proposed bi-directional DC-DC converter's modeling method and control design have been verified with computer simulation and experimentation.

  • In this paper, a novel approach to using Subcircuit of Pspice in designing feedback for DC-DC converter systems is proposed. Proposed new approach, the feedback design procedures which are based on small signal modeling are programmed as a subcircuit in Pspice. For this purpose, Analog Behavioral Modeling (ABM) is used. By using the subcircuit, the component values of the error compensation amplifier can be easily obtained by means of Pspice DC analysis. The methodology of development is presented in detail and application examples demonstrated the effectiveness of the proposed approach in designing feedbacks for DC-DC converters. • The mathematical model of a three phase PWM converter under the stationary αβ reference frame is deduced and constructed based on a Proportional-Resonant (PR) regulator, which can replace trigonometric function calculation, Park transformation, real-time detection of a Phase Locked Loop and feed-forward decoupling with the proposed accurate calculation of the inductance voltage vector. To avoid the parallel resonance of the LCL topology, the active damping method of the proportional capacitor-current feedback is employed. As to current vector error elimination, an optimized PR controller of the inner current loop is proposed with the zero-pole matching (ZPM) and cancellation method to configure the regulator. The impacts on system's characteristics and stability margin caused by the PR controller and control parameter variations in the inner-current loop are analyzed, and the correlations among active damping feedback coefficient, sampling and transport delay, and system robustness have been established. An equivalent model of the inner current loop is studied via the pole-zero locus along with the pole placement method and frequency response characteristics. Then, the parameter values of the control system are chosen according to their decisive roles and performance indicators. Finally, simulation and experimental results obtained while adopting the proposed method illustrated its feasibility and effectiveness, and the inner current loop achieved zero static error tracking with a good dynamic response and steady-state performance.

  • In this paper, a current-mode buck-boost converter using Multiple switching devices is presented. The efficiency of the proposed converter is higher than that of conventional buck-boost converter. In order to improve the power efficiency at the high current level, the proposed converter is controlled with PWM(pulse width modulation) method. The converter has maximum output current 300mA, input voltage 3.3V, output voltage from 700mV to 12V, 1.5MHz oscillation frequency, and maximum efficiency 90%. Moreover, this paper proposes watchdog circuits in order to ensure the reliability and to improve the performance of dc-dc converters. An electrostatic discharge(ESD) protection circuit for deep submicron CMOS technology is presented. The proposed circuit has low triggering voltage using gate-substrate biasing techniques. Simulated result shows that the proposed ESD protection circuit has lower triggering voltage(4.1V) than that of conventional ggNMOS(8.2V).
