  • For CMOS technology of 65 nm and beyond, the gate leakage current can not be negligible anymore. In this paper, the impact of the gate leakage current in ring voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO) on phase-locked loop (PLL) is analyzed and modeled. A voltage -to-voltage (V-to-V) circuit is proposed to reduce the voltage ripple on $V_{ctrl}$ induced by the gate leakage current. The side effects induced by the V-to-V circuit are described and optimized either. The PLL design is based on a standard 65 nm CMOS technology with a 1.8 V power supply. Simulation results show that 97 % ripple voltage is smoothed at 216 MHz output frequency. The RMS and peak-to-peak jitter are 3 ps and 14.8 ps, respectively.

  • Identification of the biochemical metabolic pathway for lignin decomposition and the responsible degradative enzymes is needed for the effective biotechnological valorization of lignin to renewable chemical products. In this study, we investigated the decomposition of kraft lignin by the soil bacterium Pseudomonas kribbensis CHA-19, a strain that can utilize kraft lignin and its main degradation metabolite, vanillic acid, as growth substrates. Gel permeation chromatography revealed that CHA-19 decomposed polymeric lignin and degraded dehydrodivanillin (a representative lignin model compound); however, the degradative enzyme(s) and mechanism were not identified. Quantitative polymerase chain reaction with mRNAs from CHA-19 cells induced in the presence of lignin showed that the putative genes coding for two laccase-like multicopper oxidases (LMCOs) and three dye-decolorizing peroxidases (DyPs) were upregulated by 2.0- to 7.9-fold compared with glucose-induced cells, which indicates possible cooperation with multiple enzymes for lignin decomposition. Computational homology analysis of the protein sequences of LMCOs and DyPs also predicted their roles in lignin decomposition. Based on the above data, CHA-19 appears to initiate oxidative lignin decomposition using multifunctional LMCOs and DyPs, producing smaller metabolites such as vanillic acid, which is further degraded via ortho- and meta-ring cleavage pathways. This study not only helps to better understand the role of bacteria in lignin decomposition and thus in terrestrial ecosystems, but also expands the biocatalytic toolbox with new bacterial cells and their degradative enzymes for lignin valorization.

  • The microbial degradation, photosensitizer-mediated photolysis, and bioceramic- accelerated degradation of the herbicide imazapyr were investigated using four types of soil. 1. Seven strains of microorganisms isolated from the soil A and the active sludge collected from the waste water disposal plant in CheongJu did not give any distinct degradation products in pure culture. When imazapyr (10ppm) was incubated for 14days with each of the 6strains of the known bacteria, they did not produce any noticeable products, either, suggesting that imazapyr was degraded very little by microorganisms in aqueous media. Meanwhile, when 50ppm of imazapyr was incubated in soil A and B for 6months, a degradation product of m/z 279 was detected. It turned out to be 2-[(1-carbamoyl-1,2-dimethylpropyl)carbamoyl]nicotinic acid, which was formed by the hydrolytic cleavage of the imidazolinone ring and by tautomerism. When imazapyr was exposed to sunlight, degradation rates were 14.6% under the control and 66.0, 76.5, 26.7, and 90.0% in the presence of PS-1 (100ppm), PS-1 (200ppm), PS-2(100ppm), and PS-3(100ppm), respectively, and a degradation product of m/z 149 was tentatively identified in the treatment of PS-1. 2. When soil C and D treated with bioceramic were incubated for 7weeks, the $^{14}C$-activities of $^{14}CO_2$ evolved were 2.03 and 1.12% of the originally applied ones, respectively, whereas those in control soils without bioceramic were 1.88 and 0.82% showing no significant defferences. After 5 weeks, however, the differences in the amounts of $^{14}CO_2$ between the two treatments increased gradually, suggesting the bioceramic effect.

  • This paper presents a 1.8 GHz CMOS frequency synthesizer with high-speed on-chip pseudo 2-stage ring VCO. We introduce and analysis the conditions in which the ring VCO can oscillate. For high speed operation, we propose the pseudo 2-stage ring VCO that eliminates dummy loads. It can operate up to 1.87 GHz with 0.6 m CMOS process, which shows 21.3% improvement aginst the conventional 4-stage ring VCO in the aspect of the speed. When the frequency synthsizer with the psedo 2-stage ring VCO is locked at 1.85GHz, the jitter measured to 24 psec. The proposed VCO and the frequency synthesizer are directly applicable to high speed clocky synhtesizers.

  • A high-speed DCO is proposed that uses the negative-skewed delay scheme. The DCO consists of a ring of inverters with each PMOS transistor driven from the output of 3 earlier stage through a set of minimum-sized pass-transistors. The digitization of negative-skewed delay is achieved by selecting pass-transistors turned on and digitizing the gate voltages of the selected pass-transistors. The proposed 7-stage DCO has been simulated using 1.8V, $0.18\;{\mu}m$ TSMC CMOS process to obtain a resolution of 3ps and an operation range of 2.88-5.03GHz.

  • This paper describes the implementation of monolithic optical transceiver circuitry being used as a part of the fiber optic modules. It has been fabricated in 0.6 ${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$ 2-poly 3-metal silicon CMOS analog technology and operates at 155.52 Mbps(STM-1) data rates. It drives laser diode to transmit intensity modulated optical signal according to 155.52 Mbps electrical data from system. Also, it receives 155.52 Mbps optical data that transmitted from other systems and converts it to electrical data using photo diode and amplifier. To avoid noise and interference between transmitter and receiver on one chip, layout techniques such as special placement, power supply separation, guard ring, and protection wall were used in the design. The die area is 4 ${\times}$ 4 $\textrm{mm}^2$, and it has 32.3 ps rms and 335.9 ps peak to peak jitter on loopback testing. the measured power dissipation of whole chip is 1.15 W(230 mW) with a single 5 V supply.

  • In the study of nuclear structure, the fast timing technique can be used to measure the lifetime of excited states. In the paper, we have developed a new fast timing system, which is made up of two $LaBr_3:Ce$ detectors and a set of waveform sampling system. The sampling system based on domino ring sampler version 4 chip (DRS4) can digitize and store the waveform information of detector signal, with a smaller volume and higher timing accuracy, and the waveform data are performed by means of digital waveform analysis methods. The coincidence time resolution of the fast timing system for two annihilation 511 keV ${\gamma}$ photon is 200ps (FWHM), the energy resolution is 3.5%@511 keV, and the energy linear response in the large dynamic range is perfect. Meanwhile, to verify the fast timing performance of the system, the $^{152}Gd-2_1^+$ state form ${\beta}^+$ decay of $^{152}Eu$ source is measured. The measured lifetime is $45.3({\pm}5.0)ps$, very close to the value of the National Nuclear Data Center (NNDC: $46.2({\pm}3.9)ps$). The experimental results indicate that the fast timing system is capable of measuring the lifetime of dozens of ps. Therefore, the system can be widely used in the research of the fast timing technology.

  • As the integration of circuit components increases steadily, various EMS(Electromagnetic Susceptibility) problems have emerged from integrated circuits and electrical systems. The electromagnetic susceptibility of VCOs(Voltage Controlled Oscillator) is especially critical in RF systems. Therefore, in this paper, through the phase noise theory that models electrical oscillators as linear time variant systems, the EMS characteristics of representative VCO -ring VCO and LC VCO- with 1.2 GHz of reference oscillating frequency are analyzed under the existence of the electromagnetic noise coupled in power supply. An simulation algorithm is developed to extract impulse response function based on the phase noise theory. When there is no supply noise, the magnitude of the jitter of two oscillators were similar to around 2.1 ps, but in presence of supply noise, the jitter was significantly lower in LC VCOs than ring VCOs.
