While the students with low fashion innovation had references from the opinion of friends or around people when purchasing their clothing, the students with high fashion innovation did from fashion magazine or PPL clothing. • The current study examines how product type and attitudes toward the webtoon - a digital comic that originated in Korea - affect consumer responses to webtoon product placement (PPL). Specifically, it examines the following responses: the perception of PPL intrusiveness, attitudes toward the PPL, attitudes toward the brand, word-of-mouth intention, and purchase intention. It further investigates how PPL type interacts with product type and attitudes toward the webtoon on consumer responses to the PPL. The findings from a 2 (product type: functional vs. hedonic) × 2 (attitudes toward the webtoon: negative vs. positive) × 2 (PPL type: creative placement vs. on-set placement) between-subject experimental study suggest the following: consumer responses to PPL in webtoon is more positive when the product is hedonic (vs. functional) and when attitudes toward the webtoon are positive (vs. negative). This study further suggests when subjects felt favorably toward the webtoon, the creative placement produced weaker perceptions of PPL intrusiveness and more favorable attitudes toward the PPL than the on-set placement. On the other hand, when subjects felt negatively toward the webtoon, the on-set placement evoked weaker perceptions of intrusiveness and more favorable attitudes toward the PPL than did the creative placement.

The frequency of exposure, the placement type of PPL, the perception under the threshold of consciousness and the interest at the product and knowledge about PPL have been widely known as the factors of effectiveness in PPL advertising. In this study, 'immersiveness' is newly introduced to investigate the effectiveness of PPL advertising due to the unique characteristics of game which easily leads to immersion. Control group is exposed to movie clip and experimental group to lacing online game. In conclusion, the deep immersion has reduced the perception level of user on PPL except the variable of PPL placement. This study suggests that how to design the PPL placement in game for enhancing marketing effect is all the more vital, in spite of the result that the player in high immersion cannot distinguish different images.

  • Purpose - This study aims to examine the effect of audience attitude toward product placement, or PPL, on product attitude and purchase intention. PPL has increasingly been prevailing in TV dramas since the revision of the Broadcasting Act in January 2010, and it is quite widespread in today's society. Therefore, this study intends to investigate how the audience would take a particular attitude toward PPL in TV dramas and how their attitude would affect their product attitude and purchase intention. Research design, data, and methodology - The sample for the current study was drawn from college students in Seoul in December 2013, as the main targets of the products and brands that were advertised by PPL are young people. The questionnaire for this study comprised nine parts, such as the knowledge of PPL, experience of PPL, TV drama watching time, impulsive buying propensity, celebrity imitating buying propensity, attitude toward PPL, attitude toward product, purchase intention, and demographic characteristics. The questionnaire items were measured by 5-point Likert scales. Whether the demographic characteristics and propensity to consume would affect PPL attitude was analyzed and how the PPL attitude would affect purchase intention through product attitude was analyzed as well. To analyze the relationship between variables, structural equation modeling analysis was performed with Amos 18.0. Results - The major findings of the study were as follows. First, whether the demographic characteristics and propensity to consume would affect PPL attitude was analyzed, and it is found that out of the demographic characteristics, only gender and knowledge of PPL exerted an influence on PPL attitude. In addition, celebrity-imitating buying propensity had an impact on PPL attitude. Second, whether PPL attitude would affect purchase intention through product attitude was analyzed by structural equation modeling. Consequently, it is found that PPL attitude impacted purchase intention through product attitude. Conclusions - The findings of the study had the following implications. First, in theoretical aspects, previous studies have proven only that attitude toward PPL influenced attitude toward product and purchase intention separately; however, the current study has investigated the mediated role of attitudes toward PPL. Second, regarding the practical aspects, as PPL attitude exercised an effect on purchase intention as well as product attitude, PPL should be utilized in a manner to stimulate the audience to take a positive attitude to it. Finally, gender, PPL knowledge, and celebrity-imitating buying orientation were identified as influential factors for PPL attitude. Specifically, female consumers showed a lower attitude toward PPL than males, and the consumers who have no knowledge showed a lower attitude toward PPL. The consumers who have celebrity imitating buying propensity expressed a higher attitude toward PPL. These factors should consequently be taken into account when PPL is planned and conducted. The current study has limitations such as the sample object, non- experimental method, and media biases. Therefore, future research should be conducted to address these limitations.

  • PPL advertising is growing due to the cheaper cost than other TV commercials, the familiar image construction from natural exposure in video, and the overseas marketing effects from programs export. However, it is difficult to provide additional information on PPL advertising targets in addition to short video exposure due to the restriction that they should be exposed without antagonizing viewers. This study designed a data service that supports PPL advertising, which provides additional information for PPL advertising targets. Specifically, the user scenario and user interface of the data service were designed considering the characteristics of the TV platform, the key additional information was defined by distinguishing the typical types of PPL advertisement, and the information on when PPL advertising targets should be exposed in the program was devised. We also developed a DVB-SI based method to provide the supplementary information to the data service.

  • This paper is an experimental study using eye-tracking on the visual attention of TV entertainment programs with PPL products being shoveled by the acceptor. As a result of analysis, first, there was no difference in the exposure time of the PPL product, which is deemed to have little effect on the subject's attention. Second, there was no difference in the PPL product's prominence, and we could see that the focus was on subtitles or the faces of the cast. Third, the concentration of attention on PPL products was higher when there were more famous cast members than there were when there were low-profile cast members, and the appearance of famous cast members was judged to be very effective in order to focus more attention on PPL products. In conclusion, when exposing PPL products in entertainment programs, it is believed that the more popular the cast members appear on entertainment shows, such as famous broadcasters, celebrities, and stars, the more effective the PPL products are, rather than the exposure time and prominence of PPL products, the more effective the companies will be in advertising the popular and likable celebrities.
