  • Purpose: The purpose was to compare shear bond strength (SBS) of three types of resin for temporary restoration to polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) depending on surface modification. Materials and Methods: Sixty disks made from PEKK were air-abraded with 110 ㎛ alumina particles (Cobra, Renfert GmbH, Hilzinge, Germany) and thirty specimens were divided into two groups each: PEKK without Visio.link (Bredent, Senden, Germany)(U) and with Visio.link (P). Resins for temporary restoration (polymethylmethacrylate; PMMA, polyethylmethacrylate; PEMA, bis-acryl composite resin) in the shape of a square with one side 3.2 mm were bonded to PEKK twenty respectively and classified into six groups (UM, UE, UC, PM, PE and PC). All specimens were stored in distilled water at 37℃ for 24 hours. SBS of each group was measured at a crosshead speed of 2 mm/min in universal testing machine. SBS was compared using one-way ANOVA and a Tukey HSD test (P = 0.05). Results: Group UM and group UE showed a significant difference in SBS with group UC (P < 0.05). Group PC showed a significant increase in SBS than group UC (P < 0.05). Conclusion: It is recommended to apply Visio.link to PEKK for adhering bis-acrylic composite resin, but not for PMMA and PEMA in clinical practice.

  • Implant treatment, which was first attempted in fully edentulous patients, is now widely used in partially edentulous, and a single tooth missing patients. Moreover, implant treatment has become an essential treatment modality in modern dentistry. The material of fabricating implant prostheses has also become more diverse than before, one of which is the use of high-performance polymers. The frequency of using high-performance polymers, which have been used in the medical field, is also increased in the dental field compared to the past. In the first case, a PEKK abutment and a PFG crown (cement-screw-retaining type) were fabricated in the lower left second premolar, and in the second case, a PEKK abutment and a monolithic zirconia crown (cement-screw-retaining type) were fabricated in the missing upper left first molar, and in the third case two PEKK abutments and a splinted PFM crowns (cement-screw-retaining type) were fabricated and connected to the upper right first and second molar implants. Through these procedures the patients obtained esthetically and functionally satisfactory results after 4 years of follow-up.

  • Purpose: The purpose of present study was to investigate fracture strength and mode of failure of endodontically treated teeth restored with metal cast post-core system, prefabricated fiber post system, and newly introduced polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) post-core system. Materials and methods: A total of 21 mandibular premolar were randomly grouped into 3 groups of 7 each according to the post material. Group A was for metal cast post core; Group B for prefabricated glass fiber post and resin core; and Group C for milled PEKK post cores. All specimens were restored with metal crown. The fracture strength of each specimen was measured by applying a static load of 135-degree to the tooth at 2 mm/min crosshead speed using a universal testing machine. After the fracture strength measurement, the mode of failure was observed. The results were analyzed using Kruscal-Wallis test and post hoc Mann-Whitney U test at confidence interval ${\alpha}=.05$. Results: Fracture resistance of PEKK post core was lower than those of cast metal post and fiber reinforced post with composite resin core. In the aspect of fracture mode most of the root fracture occurred in the metal post core, whereas the post detachment occurred mainly in the fiber reinforced post. In the case of PEKK post core, teeth and post were fractured together. Conclusion: It is necessary to select appropriate materials of post for extensively damaged teeth restoration and clinical application of the PEKK post seems to require more research on improvement of strength.

  • PURPOSE. The object of the present study was to evaluate the shear bonding strength of composite to PEKK by applying several methods of surface treatment associated with various bonding materials. MATERIALS AND METHODS. One hundred and fifty PEKK specimens were assigned randomly to fifteen groups (n = 10) with the combination of three different surface treatments (95% sulfuric acid etching, airborne abrasion with $50{\mu}m$ alumina, and airborne abrasion with $110{\mu}m$ silica-coating alumina) and five different bonding materials (Luxatemp Glaze & Bond, Visio.link, All-Bond Universal, Single Bond Universal, and Monobond Plus with Heliobond). After surface treatment, surface roughness and contact angles were examined. Topography modifications after surface treatment were assessed with scanning electron microscopy. Resin composite was mounted on each specimen and then subjected to shear bond strength (SBS) test. SBS data were analyzed statistically using two-way ANOVA, and post-hoc Tukey's test (P<.05). RESULTS. Regardless of bonding materials, mechanical surface treatment groups yielded significantly higher shear bonding strength values than chemical surface treatment groups. Unlike other adhesives, MDP and silane containing self-etching universal adhesive (Single Bond Universal) showed an effective shear bonding strength regardless of surface treatment method. CONCLUSION. Mechanical surface treatment behaves better in terms of PEKK bonding. In addition, self-etching universal adhesive (Single Bond Universal) can be an alternative bonding material to PEKK irrespective of surface treatment method.

  • When treating partial edentulous patients, it is important to use an appropriate restorative materials. Inappropriate restorative materials can adversely affect the outcome of prosthetic restorations. Zirconia and dental metal, which are currently and widely used materials, have a higher elastic modulus than cortical bone, so when an external force is generated, a harmful force can be applied to the implant and the bone around the implant. Polyetherketoneketone (PEKK), a recently introduced material, has a elastic modulus similar to that of cortical bone, and has many advantages in terms of physical properties and biocompatibility. This case report describes that implant-supported fixed prosthetic treatment using PEKK was performed, and functional and esthetic satisfactory results were obtained.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the bond strength between PEKK(Polyetherketoneketone) and Sinfony(3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) the dental composite resin by proposing the three representative surface treatment methods and evaluate to see if they affect the bond strength between two materials. A total of 30 PEKK($Pekkton^{(R)}$ Ivory, $Cendres+M{\acute{e}}taux$, Bienne, Switzerland) specimens were prepared, embedded in acrylic resin, polished(P 1200 grid) to surface, and each group was divided into 10 specimens. After then, by the surface treatment method, it classified into three groups(n=10) such as Air abrasion group(PN), applying Single Bond Universal(3M ESPE) after Air abrasion(PB), applying OPAQUE(3M ESPE) after Air abrasion(PO). Then, veneering was performed by using Sinfony(3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany). All completed specimens were allowed to rest in a $37^{\circ}C$ water bath for 24 hours. Shear bond strength of each group was measured and fracture patterns were classified. Statistic analysis was performed with One-way ANOVA followed by post hoc Scheffe tast (p<.05). Statistical analysis was performed using the SPSSWIN 21.0 program. As a result of one-way ANOVA, the average value of PB group was $27.67{\pm}4,18MPa$ and it was shown as the highest bond strength, PN and PO were $20.43{\pm}1.70$ and $19.8{\pm}4.77MPa$ each, and these were relatively low(F=18.4, P<.001), and as the post-test the Scheffe test was conducted and verified (p<.05). After examining the scheffe test, it was showed significant differences as PB>PO, PB>PN(p<.001). Through this study, in order to enhance the bonding force between PEKK and the composite resin, perform the Air abrasion and surface treatment by using Single Bond Universal(3M ESPE) is recommended, and as coMPared with other studies. And it is assumed that the increase of the application time of the Air abrasion affects the increase of the shear bond strength. Thus, further research is required.

  • Purpose: To compare the polishing characteristics and their influence on Candida albicans adhesion to the recently introduced polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) and the conventional polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) denture resin material. Materials and methods: Specimens from PEKK (Group E) and PMMA (Group M) were made in dimensions of 8 mm in diameter and 2 mm in thickness. The specimens were further divided into sub-groups according to the extent of polishing (ER, MR: rough; EP, MP: polished, N = 12 each). The specimens were polished using polishing machine and SiC foil. ER and MR group specimens were polished with 600 grit SiC foil only. EP and MP groups were further polished with 800, 1,000, 1,200 grit SiC foils sequentially. To measure the surface roughness values (Sa) of specimens, atomic force microscope (AFM) was used and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observation under 1,000, and 20,000 magnifications was performed to investigate surface topography. The polished specimens were soaked in C. albicans suspension for 2 hours with shaking to promote adhesion. The attached C. albicans were detached from the surface with 10 times of pipetting. The suspension of detached C. albicans was performed by serial dilution to 103 times, and the diluted suspensions were inoculated on Sabouraud dextrose agar plates using spread plate method. After incubating the plate for 48 hours, colony forming unit (CFU)/plate of C. albicans was counted. Statistical analysis was performed using one-way ANOVA and Tukey HSD test to confirm significant difference between the groups (α=.05). Results: Average Sa value was significantly higher in MR group compared to other groups (P<.05), meaning that additional polishing steps reduced surface roughness effectively only in the PMMA specimens. There was no significant difference in Sa values between MP and EP groups. In SEM images, PEKK specimens showed numerous spikes of abraded material protruding from the surface and this phenomenon was more significant in EP group. The mean CFU/plate value was the highest in EP group and this was significant when it was compared to MP group (P<.05) which was the lowest. Conclusion: Polishing PEKK using serial SiC abrasive foil may result in higher adhesion of C. albicans. In clinic, this should be considered carefully.

  • Purpose. This study aimed to investigate the effect of different veneering methods on the tensile bond strength between polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) and denture base resins. Materials and methods. A total of 80 PEKK T-shaped specimens were fabricated and the primer (Visio.link) was applied after airborne-particle abrasion with 110 ㎛ alumina oxide powder. According to the veneering method, the specimens were divided into four groups (n = 20) to be veneered with the gingival colored packable photopolymerized composite resin (SR Adoro); flowable photopolymerized composite resin, (Crea.lign); heat-polymerized resin (Vertex); and self-polymerized resin (ProBase Cold). Each group was divided into two subgroups (n = 10) according to the artificial thermal aging. After the tensile bond strength measurement via universal testing machine, the fracture sections of all specimens were observed. Two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD post hoc test were used for the statistical analysis (α = .05). Results. The results of the two-way ANOVA showed statistically significant differences in the tensile bond strength according to the veneering method and artificial thermal aging of denture base resins (P<.001). The highest tensile bond strength showed in the packable photopolymerized resin group before and after the artificial thermal aging. The lowest tensile bond strength showed in the heat-polymerized resin group. The mixed and adhesive fracture showed in all groups. Conclusion. The veneering method and artificial thermal aging can influence in the tensile bond strength between the resin and PEKK. The artificial thermal aging can reduce the tensile bond strength.

  • This study presented the evaluation of the stamp forming process for L-shape CF/PEKK thermoplastic composite using the finite element model. The formability of three different trimming allowances has been examined for representative product geometry. The results showed that those manufactured by high trimming allowance showed more excellent formability in those areas. Moreover, the effects of the trimming allowances on the stress, thickness, wrinkle distributions of thermoplastic composites fabricated with the stamp forming process were evaluated. The comparison of the simulation and experimental results for the thickness and wrinkle distributions proved the accuracy of the stamp forming model. The crystallinity of the composite was performed by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The void content of the composite was evaluated by matrix digestion. Then, the fabricated structure was characterized and achieved high quality in crystallinity and void content. Consequently, the presented FEM modeling shows excellent potential for application in the aircraft product design process. This pragmatic approach could efficiently offer a valuable solution for the thermoplastic composite manufacturing field.

  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to compare the accuracy of dies fabricated using 3D printing system to conventional method and to evaluate overall volumetric changes by arranging the superimposed surfaces. Materials and Methods: A mandibular right first molar from a dental model was prepared, scanned and fabricated with composites of polyetherketoneketone (PEKK). Master dies were classified into 4 groups. For the conventional method, the impression was taken with polyvinylsiloxane and the impression was poured with Type IV dental stone. For the 3D printing, the standard die was scanned and converted into models using three different 3D printers. Each of four methods was used to make 10 specimens. Scanned files were superimposed with the standard die by using 3D surface matching software. For statistical analysis, Kruskal-Wallis test and Mann-Whitney U test were done (P < 0.05). Results: Compared to the standard model, the volumetric changes of dies fabricated by each method were significantly different except the models fabricated by conventional method and 3D printer of Stereolithography (P < 0.05). The conventional dies showed the lowest volumetric change than 3D printed dies (P < 0.05). 3D printed dies fabricated by Stereolithography showed the lowest volumetric change among the different 3D printers (P < 0.05). Conclusion: The conventional dies were more accurate than 3D printed dies, though 3D printed dies were within clinically acceptable range. Thus, 3D printed dies can be used for fabricating restorations.
