The small dining tables which are made of bamboo were deteriorated condition when those were excavated from Mado shipwreck No.1. Therefore, preliminary test was conducted for consolidation (Sucrose, Dammar gum, Cetyl alcohol and Polyethylene glycol 4000) then impregnated and vacuum freeze dried. After the test, since the treatment with vacuum freeze drying using an aqueous solution of PEG 4000 keep the shape well the most and present bright colour, waterlogged archaeological bamboo conserved with vacuum freeze drying using an aqueous solution of PEG 4000. One bamboo table consolidated with soluble PEG 4000 from 10% to 40%, then vacuum freeze dried. Another impregnated with soluble PEG 4000 from 10% to 70%. After that, it was separated and held in polycarbonate sheet for preventing bending during dry. The small dining tables are the three dimensional shapes and have some loss. Therefore the mounting for support tables were necessary which are made of acrylic sheet. It keep the table shape and make it convenient for storage and handling.

We have investigated the effects of polyols and NaCl on the rheological behaviours of surfactant mixtures. Sodium lauryl ether sulfate (SLES), cocamidopropyl betaine (CAPB), disodium cocoamphodiacetate (DSCA), cocamide DEA (CDEA) and lauroyl/myristoyl DEA (LMDE) were used as surfactants. The polyols added into the surfactant mixture were 1,3-butylene glycol, propylene glycol, glycerin, sorbitol, dipropylene glycol, PEG 1500 and PEG 400. The addition of amphoteric surfactant to SLES aqueous solution lead to increase the height of foam and the viscosity of the system. The addition of nonionic surfactant, LMDE or CDEA to the SLES aqueous solution increased the viscosity and the effect of LMDE was better than that of CDEA. The effect of adding polyols and NaCl into the surfactant mixture aqueous solution lead to increase or decrease the viscosity of the systems depending on the concentration of NaCl and the kinds of polyols. These results can be explained through the salting in or salting out of surfactant of the systems.
In this work, a practical separation performance was investigated on aqueous alcohol solutions, especially for iso-propyl alcohol (IPA), which is usually used during the semi- conductor rinsing process. The removal of various substances from waste aqueous IPA solutions was carried out by microfiltration with $0.1\~1{\mu}$m pore size of mean diameter as a pre-filter. Permeability and molecular weight cut-off of the functional polysulfone(PSf) ultrafiltration membrane to purify waste aqueous IPA solutions were measured through the ultrafiltration test. The solute rejection of PSf membrane had $92\%$ in 1,000ppm aqueous PEG solution with PEG molecular weight 10,000, the molecular weight cut-off had 10,000. The IPA concentration on the $CMPA-K^+$ membrane performance using pervaporation module system could be increased from $95.04 wt\%$ to more than $98.50wt\%$ in about 9hr at operation temperature of $70^{\circ}C$ using the pervaporation module system.
Japanese Larch(Larix kaempferi) was treated with aqueous solutions(30%, 40%, 50%) of polyethylene glycols(PEG, #1000, #1500, #4000, #6000) for the dimensional stabilization. The antiswelling efficiency(ASE) was measured for the evaluation of the dimensional stabilization. The weight percent gains(WPGs) of the woods treated with 40% solutions were higher than those of the others, and the highest WPG was achieved by treatment with 40% solution of PEG #1500. The ASE decreased with increasing molecular weight of PEG. ASE of woods treated with PEG #1000 and PEG #1500 were higher than those of the others.
A biodegradable polymer poly((R) -3-hydroxybutyric acid) (PHB) was conjugated with a hydrophilic polymer poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) by the ttansesterification reaction to form the amphiphilic block copolymer. PHB with low molecular weight ($3000{\sim}30000$) was appropriated for the drug delivery materials. High molecular weight PHB was hydrolyzed by an acid-catalyst to produce the low molecular weight one. Amphiphilic block copolymer was formed the self-assembled polymeric micelle system in the aqueous solution that the hydrophillic PEG was wraped the hydrophobic PHB. Generally, polymeric micelle forms the small particle between $10{\sim}200nm$. These polymeric micelle systems have been widely used for the drug delivery systems because they were biodegradable, biocompatible, non-toxic and patient compliant. The hydroxyl group of PEG was substituted with carboxyl group which has the reactivity to the ester group of PHB. Amphiphilic block copolymer was conjugated between PHB, and modified PEG at $176^{\circ}C$ which was higher than the melting point of PHB. Transesterification reaction was verified with DSC, FTIR, $^1H-NMR$. In the aqueous solution, critical micelle concentration (CMC) of the mPEG-co-PHB copolymer measured by the fluororescence scanning spectrometer was $5{\times}10^{-5}g/L$. The shape and size of the nanoparticle was taken by dynamic light scattering and atomic force microscopy. The size of the nanoparticle was about 130 nm and the shape was spherical. Our polymeric micelle system can be used as the passive targeting drug delivery system.
Diacetylene lipid monomers possess the capability to self-assemble into vesicles via polymerization under ultraviolet irradiation, resulting in the formation of polydiacetylene (PDA) liposomes. Exposure of the polymerized vesicles to external stimuli is known to induce a unique blue-to-red color transition. The cyclic oligosaccharide ${\alpha}$-cyclodextrin known for its use in many applications, such as drug delivery, purification, and stimulus sensing, is able to form an inclusion complex with poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) in aqueous solution. In this study, we prepared polymeric liposomes with PEG (PEG-PDA) with the aim of improving the stability of the vesicles and colorimetric response toward ${\alpha}$-cyclodextrin. We demonstrated that PEG-PDA liposome displays unique characteristics compared with native PDA liposome and it also shows apparent chromic properties of the inclusion complex formation with ${\alpha}$-cyclodextrin.
To achieve targeted drug delivery for chemotherapy, a ligand-mediated nanoparticulate drug carrier was designed, which could identity a specific receptor on the surfaces of tumor cells. Biodegradable poly(ethylene oxide)/poly$({\varepsilon}-caprolactone)$ (PEG/PCL) amphiphilic block copolymers coupled to biotin ligands were synthesized with a variety of PEG/PCL compositions. Block copolymeric nanoparticles harboring the anticancer drug paclitaxel were prepared via micelle formation in aqueous solution. The size of the biotin-conjugated PEG/PCL nanoparticles was determined by light scattering measurements to be 88-118 nm, depending on the molecular weight of the block copolymer, and remained less than 120 nm even after paclitaxel loading. From an in vitro release study, biotin-conjugated PEG/PCL nanoparticles containing paclitaxel evidenced sustained release profiles of the drug with no initial burst effect. The biotin-conjugated PEG/PCL block copolymer itself evidenced no significant adverse effects on cell viability at $0.005-1.0{\mu}g/mL$ of nanoparticle suspension regardless of cell type (normal human fibroblasts and HeLa cells). However, biotin-conjugated PEG/PCL harboring paclitaxel evidenced a much higher cytotoxicity for cancer cells than was observed in the PEG/PCL nanoparticles without the biotin group. These results showed that the biotin-conjugated nanoparticles could improve the selective delivery of paclitaxel into cancer cells via interactions with over-expressed biotin receptors on the surfaces of cancer cells.
Fluidic conditions for the separation of phases were surveyed in a microfluidic aqueous two-phase extraction system. The infusion ratio between polyethylene glycol (PEG) and dextran solution defines the concentrations of each polymer in micro-channel, which determine the phase-separation. The appropriate ratio between PEG (M.W. 8000, 10%, w/v) and dextran T500 (M.W. 500000, 5%, w/v) in order to perform the separation of phases of both polymers was observed as changing the mixed ratio of both polymers. Based on the fluidic conditions, stable two-phase solutions were obtained within 4% to 8% and 3% to 1% of PEG and dextran, respectively. In addition, the characteristics of the two-phase were discussed. The separation technique studied in the paper can be applied for the implementation of a lab-on-a chip which can detect various biological entities such cells, bacterium, and virus in an integrated manner using built in a biosensor inside the chip.

The purpose of this study is to develop a method for separating antioxidants and sugars from grape skin extract. The extract was first mixed with a variety of organic solvents to investigate whether the separation was feasible. When employing acetone, ethanol, dimethylsulfoxide, or dimethylformamide, the organic solvent-extract combination formed a single phase. However, when benzene, ethyl acetate, or n-hexane was added to the extract, the mixture separated into an organic and an aqueous phase and the pigments remained in the aqueous phase. On the other hand, when polyethylene glycol-2,000 (PEG-2000) and sodium citrate were added to the extract, the mixture was separated into three layers, with the majority of the flavonoids migrating to the top layer and 53% of the extract's glucose migrating to the bottom layer. The top layer had significant antioxidant activity, whereas the bottom layer showed no antioxidant activity. The glucose recovery in the bottom layer increased as the molecular weight of PEG increased and the highest recovery (67%) was observed when PEG-8,000 was added. The highest flavonoid separation was observed with PEG-2,000, followed by PEG-8,000 and PEG-400. The flavonoid separation when PEG-2,000 was added resulted in a flavonoid recovery of 48% and 0.2% from the top and bottom layers, respectively. Examining the effect of the separated solution using the agar disc diffusion method on yeast cell growth confirmed that the addition of the extract, the top, and the bottom layer did not inhibit cell growth.

Silver nano-particles (AgNPs) have attracted much attention for centuries due to their unique optical properties, electrical conductivities, oxidative catalysis, and antibacterial effect. In this study, AgNPs have been prepared by using aqueous $AgNO_3$ solution in the poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA)/poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) hydrogels. PVA and PEG powders were dissolved in deionized water, and then irradiated by a gamma-ray with a radiation dose of 50 kGy to make hydrogels. PVA/PEG hydrogels were dipped into $1.0{\times}10^{-2}M$$AgNO_3$ solution for 1 hour. After that, the swollen hydrogels were irradiated by gamma-ray for the formation of AgNPs. FE-SEM is used to observe the formation of AgNPs as a function of the content of PEG and the irradiation dose. Also, AgNPs in the PVA/PEG hydrogels were monitored by UV-Vis. It is observed that the content of PEG and gamma-ray irradiation in the hydrogel is crucial to the formation of AgNPs. Finally, antibacterial tests indiacted that the hydrogel containing silver nanoparticle has antibacterial activity.
