This paper investigates the effect of thermal oxidation on the profile of the residual stress along the depth of p+ silicon films by quantitative determination method. Two examples for the application of this method illustrate that most of p+ region is subjected to the tensile stress except the region near the front surface and that the stress gradient of the film oxidized at $1100^{\circ}C$ is more steep than that of the film oxidized at $1000^{\circ}C$.
The low molecular weight zinc-binding protein metallothionein(MT) contains 32% cysteine and has been shown to efficiently scavenge hydroxyl radicals in vitro. MT expression is induced by oxidative stress and an antioxidant role for this protein has therefore been proposed. This review mainly focuses on the evidence for this role arising from studies using genetically modified animals and cells which either over- or under-express MT. Despite some considerable disparity of results in the literature, reported studies do generally support an antioxidant role. Nevertheless, oxidant stress at non-physiological treatment levels has been the preferred experimental model and there is little information about the role of MT in physiological oxidative stress. Although it is presumed that the mechanism by which MT has an antioxidant effect involves oxidation of cysteinal thiols, it is possible that zinc release from MT is in itself an important signalling factor.

Tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill) seedlings exposed to various concentrations of $CdCl_2(0{\sim}100{\mu}M)$ in a nutrient solution for up to 9 days were analyzed with respect to the thiol changes and oxidative stress. The Cd exposure increased total non-protein thiols (NPT) and cysteine in both leaves and roots, total glutathione in leaves, and the ratios of oxidized glutathione (GSSG)/reduced glutathione (GSH) in both leaves and roots, but decreased the ratio of dehydroascorbate (DASA)/ascorbate(ASA) in leaves. Our results suggest that the Cd-induced GSH depletion due to thiol synthesis and oxidation alters the antioxidant activity of seedlings for $H_2O_2$, and the subsequent $H_2O_2$ accumulationand oxidative stress result in phytotoxicity.
The expanding copper mandrel test performed at three strain rates (3.2$\times$10E -5/s, 2.0$\times$10E-6/s and 1.2$\times$10E-7/s) over 553-873 K temperature range by varying the heating rates (8-1$0^{\circ}C$/s, 1-2$^{\circ}C$/s and 0.5$^{\circ}C$/s) in air and in vacuum (5$\times$10E-5 torr). The yield stress peak, the strain rate sensitivity minimum and the activation volume peaks could be explained in terms of the dynamic strain aging. The activation energy for dynamic strain aging obtained from the yield stress peak temperature and strain rate was 196 KJ/mol and this value was in good agreement with the activation energy for oxygen diffusion in $\alpha$-zirconium and Zircaloy-2 (207-220 KJ/mol). Therefore, oxygen atoms are responsible for the dynamic strain aging which appeared between 573 K and 673 K. The yield stress increase due to the oxidation was obtained by comparing the yield stress in air with that in vacuum and represented by the percentage increase of yield stress ( $\sigma$$^{a}$$_{y}$ - $\sigma$$^{v}$$_{y}$ / $\sigma$$^{v}$$_{y}$ ). The slower the strain rate, the greater the percentage increase occurs. In order to estimate the yield stress of PWR fuel cladding material under the service environment, the yield stress in water was obtained by comparing the oxidation rate in air that in water assuming the relationship between the oxygen pick-up amount and the yield stress increase.

Background: Multiple myeloma is a malignant silent incurable plasma cell disorder. The present study aimed to assessed the activation of the oxidative stress pathway in afected patients Materials and Methods: Advanced oxidation protein products (AOPPs), malondialdehyde (MDA), adenosine deaminase (ADA), total antioxidant capacity (TAC) levels, glutathione, ascorbic acid (vitamin C), ${\alpha}$-tocopherol (vitamin E) in addition to related enzymes glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px), glutathione reductase (GSH-R) and superoxide dismutase (SOD) were analyzed in sixty patients with multiple myeloma before and after one month treatment with induction therapy. Results: The results of the study showed a significant elevation in AOPPs, MDA, ADA levels in patients with multiple myeloma before and after treatment in comparison to healthy control samples In contrast TAC glutathione, vitamin C and E, and the antioxidant enzymes levels were decreased significantly. On comparing samples of MM patients after treatment, there was significant increase of TAC glutathione, vitamin C and E, and the antioxidant enzymes in parallel with decreasing AOPPs, MDA and ADA levels in comparison with samples of patients before treatment. Conclusions: The results indicate oxidative stress and DNA damage activity increase in MM and are alleviated in response to therapy.

An experimental study of the influences of HF concentration, current density, reaction time and the silicon surface, on the formation and properties of porous silicon are reported. The SOI (Silicon-On-Insulator) strip lines with 100 um width are fabricated at room temperature by anodic oxidation of PSL (Porous Silicon Layers). The stress on the silicon island induced by the anodic oxidation can be avoided by the two-step PSL formation technique. At the final step of IC fabrication process, device isolation will be achieved at room temperature by this method.

A soluble protein from Saccharomyces cerevisiae specifically provides protection against a thiolcontaining oxidation system but not against an oxidation system without thiol. This 25-kDa protein was thus named thiol-dependent protector protein (TPP). The role of TPP in the cellular defense against oxidative stress was investigated in Escherichia coli containing an expression vector with a yeast genomic DNA fragment that encodes TPP (strain YP) and a mutant in which the catalytically essential amino acid in the active site of TPP (Cys-47) has been replaced with alanine by site-directed mutagenesis (strain YPC47A). There was a distinct difference between these two strains in regard to viability, modulation of activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase, and the oxidative damage of DNA upon exposure to menadione. These results suggest that TPP may play a direct role in the cellular defense against oxidative stress by functioning as an antioxidant protein.
