  • For the high efficiencies of quantum dot-sensitized solar cells (QDSCs), it is important to control the severe electron recombination at the interface of photoanode/electrolyte. In this work, we optimize the surface passivation process of ZnS/SiO2 double overlayers for the enhanced photovoltaic performances of QDSCs. The overlayers of zinc sulfide (ZnS) and SiO2 are coated on the surface of QD-sensitized photoanode by successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction (SILAR) method, and sol-gel reaction, respectively. In particular, for the sol-gel reaction of SiO2, the influences of temperature of precursor solution are investigated. By application of SiO2 overlayers on the ZnS-coated photoanode, the conversion efficiency of QDSCs is increased from 5.04% to 7.35%. The impedance analysis reveals that the electron recombination at the interface of photoanode/electrolyte is obviously reduced by the SiO2 overlayers.

스트레인을 받고 있는 표면에서의 원자 확산계수 (Surface Diffusion Coefficients of Adatoms on Strained Overlayers)

  • W(110) 표면에 성장한 Co 박막에서 원자 정역학을 주사터널링 현미경으로 연구했다. 원자섬의 개수 밀도를 측정하여 원자 확산 계수의 비를 알 수 있었다. W(110) 표면, Co가 1 원자층 성장된 표면, Co가 2 원자층 성장된 표면의 원자 확산 계수의 비는 상온에서 1:124:33000인 것으로 측정되었다. Co가 2 원자층 성장된 표면의 확산 계수가 Co 가 1 원자층 성장된 표면의 확산 계수보다 큰 것은 이종성장의 스트레인 효과로 인한 것으로 해석되었다.

  • 표면 연구에서 단결정면 위에 진공 증착된 층의 두께를 측정하는 일은 쉽지 않다. 지금까지 몇 가지 측정방법들이 알려지고 있으나 이들 방법은 섬세한 고가장비를 필요로 한 다. 본 연구에서는 단순히 Auger 스펙트럼을 이용하여 두께를 측정할 수 있는 간단한 방법 을 제안하고 있다. 또한 구리 단결정면 위에 증착된 철 원자의 두께 측정에 관한 예가 제시 되고 있다.

VALENCE BAND PHOTOEMISSION STUDY OF Fe OVERLAYERS ON Cr

  • Electronic structures of Fe overlayers on Cr(Fe/Cr) films, with an Fe coverage of $1-20{\AA}$, have been investigated by using photoemission spectroscopy. Experimental results are compared with supercell band structure calculations for a system with monolayer (ML) Fe on each side of five layer Cr, Fe(1ML)/Cr(5ML)/Fe(1ML). The extracted Fe 3d partial spectral weight in Fe/Cr exhibits very interesting features for very thin Fe overlayers. First, a sharp emissionnear the Fermi energy is observed, which is expected to originate primarily from hybridization between Fe and Cr 3d electrons at the Fe/Cr interface, and partially from the Fe 3d surface states in the Fe overlayer. Second, other structures are observed at higher binding energies which resemble the Cr 3d valence bands, also suggesting large hybridization between Fe and Cr 3d states at the Fe/Cr interface. These conjectures are confirmed by band structure calculations for Fe(1ML)/Cr(5ML)/Fe(1ML).

Giant Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy of a Fe(001) Surface: A Density Functional Study

  • We predict agigantic perpendicular magnetocrystalline anisotropy (MCA) in Fe (001) capped by 5d transition metal (TM) overlayers by using first principles calculations. Analysis of atom-by-atom contribution to MCA reveals that gigantic MCA as large as 11 meV/TM originates not from Fe atoms but from the 5d TMs through the strong spin-orbit coupling. More specifically, it is the hybridization between TM and Fe d orbitals that also induces non-negligible magnetic moments in TM. Furthermore, spin-channel decompositions of MCA matrix with and without the presence of Fe substrate identify the electronic origin of the perpendicular MCA that the down-down channel contribution plays the most crucial role for the sign changes of MCA of TM overlayers upon the hybridization with Fe-3d.

Growth and Electronic Properties of Ag Overlayers on Stepped Pt(211) Surface

  • The growth and electronic properties of ultrathin silver films deposited onto Pt(211) surface were studied using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low-energy electron diffraction (LEED), and x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. The AES and LEED results indicate that the silver grows by a layer by layer growth followed by three dimensional islands growth. The XPS results show that the Ag 3d core-level binding energy of Ag overlayers on Pt(211) shifts toward lower binding energy relative to the bulk value at lower Ag coverage. This negative binding energy shift of the Ag 3d core level is explained by the reduced coordination number of the overlayer atoms and the resulting initial state band narrowing effect suggested by Wertheim and Citrin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 1978, 41, 1425].
