  • A cylindrical pin fin with variable fin base thickness is optimized based on fixed outer radius by using the one dimensional analytic method. Heat loss from the pin fin with fixed outer radius is presented as a function of the fin length. The ratio of in length for optimum heat loss to that for the maximum heat loss is listed. The maximum heat loss and effectiveness and the fin length for the optimum heat loss are presented as a function of fin base thickness and outer radius. One of the results presents the maximum effectiveness decreases rapidly first and then decreases slowly as the fin outer radius increases.

  • A pin fin with variable fin base thickness is optimized based on the ratio of heat loss to the maximum heat loss using a two-dimensional analytic method. The temperature profile along the normalized radius position in the fin is presented. For fixed fin outer radius, the optimum heat loss, fin length and efficiency as a function of fin base thickness, outer radius, convection characteristic numbers ratio and ambient convection characteristic number are presented. One of the results shows that the effect of fin outer radius and ambient convection characteristic number on the optimum fin length is remarkable.

  • A pin fin with variable fin base thickness is analysed by using the one dimensional analytic method. Heat loss and fin thermal resistance are presented as a function of the fin base thickness, pin fin outer radius and convection characteristic numbers ratio. The relationship between the fin outer radius and fin base thickness for the same amount of heat loss is shown. One of the results indicates the fin thermal resistance decreases as the fin outer radius and/or convection characteristic numbers ratio increase whereas the fin thermal resistance is independent on the variation of fin base thickness.

  • Bending work using press dies involves bending a flat blank to a desired angle. The bending produces a flange (the bent part) and a web (the unbent part). The bending line will have a bending angle, and there is an inner and outer bending radius. The minimum inner radius size is determined by the material used. When the inner radius size is too small, there will be excess metal welding, which will cause a crack in the outer radius part. The outer bending radius size cannot be controlled by a bending punch and die block. Types of bending include V-bending, U-bending, O-bending, edge bending, twist bending, and crimping. Z-bending involves two bending lines, which are set on the upper side and under surface of the blank, respectively, and upward or downward bending is used. Z-bending is also called crank bending. Z-bending using this type of die structure will produce a standard inner bending radius. The standard size is the minimum bending radius that represents the angle radius of the bending punch. In industry, there is a need for a sharp edge shape with a very small size (R=0.2mm), but that is not possible when using bending punch and die block. The purpose of this research is to meet the need by development.

  • Environment has a significant impact on the evolution of dark halo profiles. We used a cosmological N-body simulation based on WMAP5 cosmology to study environmental effects on halo profiles. Host haloes located in sparse regions are highly concentrated, and more massive haloes have higher concentration index. This is because mass accretion affects only the outer part of the halo and consequently increase the virial radius having no effect on the scale radius. Conversely, host haloes located in dense regions have low concentration index. This is because frequent mergers affect even the inner part of the halo. So, scale radius increases with the growth of virial radius. Evolutions of subhalo profiles are essentially different from those of host haloes because subhaloes undergo tidal stripping. The stripping begins once a subhalo approaches closer than ~3 virial radii of the host halo. During the stripping, the inner part of the subhalo keep following NFW profile, but the mass of the outer part gradually decreases. As a result, when the subhalo reaches the pericenter of its host, only about inner 30% of the subhalo follows the NFW profile.

  • A comparison is made of the heat loss from a hollow cylinder, computed using an one-dimensional analytic method and a two-dimensional separation of variables scheme. For a two-dimensional analysis, the temperature of the inner surface as a boundary condition can be varied along the length of the cylinder by varing the temperature variation factor, b. Comparisons of the heat loss from the hollow cylinder using these two methods are given as a function of non-dimensional cylinder length, the ratio of the outer radius to the inner radius, temperature variation factor and Biot number. The result shows that the value of the heat loss from the hollow cylinder obtained using the one-dimensional analytic method becomes close to the value given by the two-dimensional separation of variables scheme as the value of Biot number and the non-dimensional hollow cylinder length increase and as the ratio of the outer radius to the inner radius decreases.

  • The stress distributions of hydranlic actuator cylinder tube acting in uniform inner pressure were analysed by the boundary element method(BEM). STKM13C tube was utilized for machine structural purposes model, its inner radius was 100 mm and outer radius was 140 mm. Axial length was semi-infinite and the isoparametric element of BEM was used. Radial and tangential stresses are maximum(-20.3 MPa and 52 MPa) at the inner radius and the minimum at the outer radius of the hydraulic actuator cylinders for an industrial systems. Stress diminution ratio was about 0.6 MPa/mm. And then coincidence between the simulation techniques as exact results(Lame' equation) and finite element method(FEM) is found to be fairly good, showing that the proposed analysis by BEM is reliable.

  • It is less well known that the properties, especially the mass accretion rate, of accretion flow are affected by the angular momentum of accreting gas. Park (2009) found that the mass accretion rate \dot{m}, mass accretion rate in units of Bondi accretion rate, is inversely proportional to the angular momentum of gas λ, at the Bondi radius where gas sound speed is equal to the free-fall velocity and proportional to the viscosity parameter α, and also Narayan & Fabian (2011) found a similar relation, but the dependence of the mass accretion rate of the gas angular momentum is much weaker. In this work, we investigate the global solutions for the rotating Bondi flow, i.e., polytropic flow accreting via viscosity, for various accretion parameters and the dependence of the mass accretion rate on the physical characteristics of gas. We set the outer boundary at various radius r_{out}=10^3~10^5 r_{Sch}, where r_{Sch} is the Schwarzschild radius of the black hole. For a small Bondi radius, the mass accretion rate changes steeply, as the angular momentum changes, and for a large Bondi radius, the mass accretion rate changes gradually. When the accreting gas has a near or super Keplerian rotation, we confirm that the relation between the mass accretion rate and angular momentum is roughly independent of Bondi radius as shown in Park (2009). We find that \dot{m} is determined by the gas angular momentum at the Bondi radius in units of r_{Sch}c. We also investigate the solution for the rotating Bondi flow with the outflow. The outflow affects the determination of the mass accretion rate at the outer boundary. We find that the relation between the mass accretion and the gas angular momentum becomes shallower as the outflow strengthens.

  • In this paper, the sensing characteristics of a double cladding fiber (DCF) long-period fiber grating (LPFG) to the surrounding refractive index (SRI) are studied. The outer cladding of the DCF plays the role of the overlay, thus, the mode transition (MT) phenomenon of DCF can be induced by etching the outer cladding radius instead of coating overlays. The response characteristics of the effective refractive index (ERI) of the cladding mode to the outer cladding radius are analyzed. It is found that in the MT range, the change rate of ERIs of cladding modes is relatively larger than that for other ranges. Further, based on the features of the mode transition region (MTR), the phase-matching curve of the 11th cladding mode is investigated, and the response of the DCF-LPFG to the SRI is characterized by the change of wavelength intervals between the dual peaks under different outer cladding radii. The numerical simulation results show that the SRI sensitivity is greatly improved, which is available to 3484.0 nm/RIU with the fitting degree 0.998 in the SRI range of 1.33-1.37. The proposed DCF-LPFG can provide new theoretical support for designing the DCF-LPFG refractive index sensor with excellent performances of sensitivity, linearity and structure.
