Hood and Bumper Structure Design Methodology for Pedestrian Regulation (보행자 법규와 자동차 후드 및 범퍼 구조물 설계방안)

  • Although the numbers of pedestrian fatalities and injuries are steadily declining worldwide, pedestrian protection is still an important issue. Extensive researches have been carried out in the field of pedestrian protection in order to establish pedestrian safety regulations. The automobile hoods and bumpers, which pedestrians frequently run into during accidents, should be safely designed for pedestrians. Two analysis methods are utilized to design safe structures of the hood and the bumper. They are real experiment and computer simulation. In this research, a method is developed to simultaneously utilize the results from the experiment and the simulation. For design, orthogonal arrays are employed to combine the two methods. Based on this method, a hood and a bumper are designed to protect pedestrians.

  • Robust design is to identify appropriate settings of control factors that make the system's performance robust to to changes in the noise factors that represent the source of variation. In the Taguchi parameter design, the product array approach using orthogonal arrays is mainly used. However, it often requires an excessive number of experiments. An alternative approach, which is called the combined array approach, was suggested by Welch et. al. (1990) and studied by others. In these studies, only single response variable was considered. We propose how to simultaneously optimize multiple responses when we use the combined array approach.

  • An optimal robust design methodology has been developed to minimize the warpage in a decorating panel of monitor molded by the plastic injection. For the associated methodology, the Taguchi's Design Of Experiment (DOE) based on orthogonal arrays and Signal-to-Noise Ratio is combined with commercial simulation tools f3r injection molding. An optimal robust design solution is statistically resulted from the computational simulation. The related experiment was done for evaluations of the warpage in the decorating panel part of monitor. This research showed that the warpage under the applied optimal design conditions was comparatively reduced.

  • Optimization of multi-quality characteristics in injection molded parts is very important, but it is sometimes difficult for part/mold designers. The objective of this study is to develop a practical design methodology for optimizing two-quality characteristics of injection molded parts. To attain this end, we developed a new design-range reduction algorithm based on Taguchi's orthogonal arrays for two characteristics. Then, the algorithm was integrated with commercial injection-molding simulation tools. A feature of the proposed methodology is that it allows field-designers unfamiliar with general optimization methods to be able to apply the methodology to their design problems with ease. Finally, we have applied the proposed design methodology to optimization of weldlines and deflections in an actual bezel model. The results show the usefulness of this methodology.

Robust Design of Credit Scoring System by the Mahalanobis-Taguchi System

  • Credit scoring is widely used to make credit decisions, to reduce the cost of credit analysis and enable faster decisions. However, traditional credit scoring models do not account for the influence of noises. This study proposes a robust credit scoring system based on Mahalanobis-Taguchi System (MTS). The MTS, primary proposed by Taguchi, is a diagnostic and forecasting method using multivariate data. The proposed approach's effectiveness is demonstrated by using real case data from a large Taiwanese bank. The results reveal that the robust credit scoring system can be successfully implemented using MTS technique.

The effect of coating wire on the performance of wire electrical discharge machining (코팅와이어가 와이어 방전가공 특성에 미치는 영향)

  • The machining performance of wire electrical discharge machining(WEDM), such as cutting speed, surface roughness and straightness depend on the electrode, and the machining parameters are diverse and affect each other. Therefore operator must have a lot of experiences of the parameter for the better machining performance in WEDM. An approach to minimize the time for determining of parameters setting is proposed. Based on the Taguchi method, the significant factors affecting the machining performance are determined. Types of electrodes are arranged at inner array in tables of orthogonal arrays so that we can estimate machining performances of each electrode. Coating wire shows better performances than brass wire in cutting speed but it produces poor surface roughness, and two wires shows similar performance in straightness

  • The object of this study was to design of micro stage, which is one of the equipments embodied in ultra precision positioning mechanism. Design factors for micro stage were decided a roundness of hinge, a thickness of hinge, a thickness of stage, a length of arms and a clearance of division. To obtain the $1^{st}$ natural frequency and equivalent stresses, FEM simulation was performed using the table of orthogonal arrays and Taguchi method was used to determine the optimal design parameters. As results of this study, the size of 1st natural frequency and equivalent stresses on micro stage was influenced significantly by a thickness of hinge and a length of arm.

  • This study proposes a new optimization algorithm which is combined with genetic algorithm and ANOM. This improved genetic algorithm is not only faster than the simple genetic algorithm, but also gives a more accurate solution. The optimizing ability and convergence rate of a new optimization algorithm is identified by using a test function which have several local optimum and an optimum design of rocker arm shaft. The calculation results are compared with the simple genetic algorithm.

  • The Mahalanobis-Taguchi System (MTS) is a diagnostic and predictive method for multivariate data. In the MTS, the Mahalanobis space (MS) of reference group is obtained using the standardized variables of normal data. The Mahalanobis space can be used for multi-class classification. Once this MS is established, the useful set of variables is identified to assist in the model analysis or diagnosis using orthogonal arrays and signal-to-noise ratios. And other several techniques have already been used for classification, such as linear discriminant analysis and logistic regression, decision trees, neural networks, etc. The goal of this case study is to compare the ability of the Mahalanobis-Taguchi System and logistic regression using a data set.

  • During the past several decades, the Taguchi robust design method has been widely used in various fields successfully. On the other hand, some researchers and practitioners have criticized the method with respect to the way of utilizing orthogonal arrays, the signal-to-noise ratio as a performance measure, data analysis methods, etc., and proposed alternative approaches to robust design. This paper introduces the Taguchi method first, evaluates the validity of the criticisms, and discusses advantages and disadvantages of each alternative. Finally, research issues to be addressed for effective robust design are presented.
