Screening of Herbal Medicines from Korea with Inhibitory Activity on Advanced Glycation End Products Formation (XII) (한국 약용식물의 최종당화산물 생성저해활성 검색(XII))

  • Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have been implicated in diabetic complications. In this study, the inhibitory effect on AGEs formation of 156 Korean herbal medicines has been evaluated. Among them, 15 Korean herbal medicines were showed to have significant effect (IC50: <10 μg/ml) compared to positive reference, aminoguandine (IC50: 76.47±4.81 μg/ml). Especially, four herbal medicines, Alnus firma (leaves, IC50: 3.25±0.10 μg/ml), Juncus decipiens (whole plants, IC50: 4.30±0.44 μg/ml), Smilax china (stems, IC50: 3.55±0.21 μg/ml), and Vicia amoena (Aerial parts, IC50: 4.25±0.06 μg/ml) showed more potent inhibitory activity approximately 8-24 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine.

  • In this study, 80 herbal medicines from Vietnam have been investigated with an in vitro evaluation system using advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation inhibitory activity. Of these, 10 herbal medicines (IC50: <5 μg/ml) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Particularly, herbal medicines Strobilanthes pateriformis (aerial parts), Rhodamnia dumetorum (twigs), Glochidion rubrum (twigs), Dipterocarpus obtusifolius (twigs), Bombax ceiba (twigs), Amesiodendron chinense (twigs), Bauhinia coccinea (twigs), Lithocarpus laouanensis (twigs), Bauhinia bracteata (twigs) and Connarus paniculatus (twigs), showed more potent inhibitory activity (approximately 16-31 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine (IC50: 76.47 μg/ml).

  • Aldose reductase (AR) has been implicated in the development of the diabetic complications. To discover novel treatments for diabetic complications from natural sources, 65 Korean herbal medicines have been investigated for inhibitory activities on AR. Of these, 23 herbal medicines exhibited a significant inhibitory activity compared with 3,3-tetramethyleneglutaric acid (TMG). Particularly, 8 herbal medicines, Acer tataricum (twig, stem and leaf), Acer tataricum (fruit), Rhododendron schlippenbachii (twig, stem and leaf), Weigela subsessilis (twig, stem and leaf), Acer mono (branch and leaf), Ailanthus altissima (twig, stem and leaf), Lindera obtusiloba (branch and leaf), Solidago serotina (whole plant) showed three times more potent inhibitory activity than the positive control, TMG.

A herbological study on the native plants of Dokdo island (독도의 식물 한약자원에 관한 본초학적 연구)

  • Objective : For the purpose of investigating the herbal resources of Dokdo island, this study was designed. Method : For the first time, we searched the native plants of Dokdo island from research data. And we examined herbological books on the plants of Dokdo island. Result : The native herbaceous plants in Dokdo island were 27 family and 73 species, and the medicinal plants were 49 species among them. The woody plants in Dokdo island were 12 family and 13 species, and the medicinal plants were 10 species among them. The main medicinal parts of medicinal plants were the whole body of herbs, roots, and seeds in order. The herbal medicines with cold or cool nature were 45 species, they took the top nature of the herbal medicines. According to the properties and principal action of native herbal medicines in Dokdo island, the major parts were classified into drugs for clearing away heat, eliminating toxin, activating blood flow and removing blood stasis, urination, removing heat from the blood and stopping of bleeding. The number of native herbal medicines with small toxicity in Dokdo island were 7 species. Conclusion : For the purpose of preserving the native plants of Dokdo island, we should recognize not only medical benefits but also matters that demand special attention.

  • Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have been postulated to play a central role in the development of diabetic complications. A variety of different agents that inhibit AGEs have been under investigation. In this study, 66 herbal medicines from China have been investigated with an in vitro evaluation system using AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Of these, 31 herbal medicines ($IC_{50}$ < $50\;{\mu}g/ml$) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Particularly, 5 herbal medicines, Camptotheca acuminata (branches and leaves), Quercus franchetii (branches), Camellia pitardii (leaves, branches, and fruits), Antidesma bunius (whole plants), and Loranthus parasiticus (whole plants) showed more potent inhibitory activity (approximately 6-20 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine ($IC_{50}=52.96\;{\mu}g/ml$).

  • Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) has been shown to play an important role in the development of the diabetic complications. The AGEs inhibitors or cross-link breakers attenuate various functional and structural manifestations of diabetic complications. In this study, 69 China herbal medicines have been investigated with an in vitro evaluation system using AGEs inhibitory activity. Of these, 28 herbal medicines $IC_{50}$=<50 ${\mu}g/ml$) were found to have stronger AGEs inhibitory activity compared with aminoguanidine ($IC_{50}$=59.77 ${\mu}g/ml$). Particularly, 5 herbal medicines, Camptotheca acuminata (stem, leaf), Eurya groffii (stem, leaf), Cornus Capitata (leaf), Mucuna birdwoodiana (root), Nelumbo nucifera (fruit, seed) showed more potent inhibitory activity (approximately 6-27 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine.

A study of the status of Traditional Chinese Medicines as intangible cultural heritages and of the measures taken to protect them (현대(現代) 중국(中國)의 전통의약(傳統醫藥) 무형문화유산(無形文化遺産) 현황(現況) 및 보호조치(保護措置)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • This study was conducted to analyze the status of the traditional medicines registered by the Chinese state as intangible cultural heritages, and of Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion registered by UNESCO as world intangible cultural heritages in 2010, in connection with the need to have Traditional Korean Medicine skills similarly registered as world intangible cultural heritage items. Since UNESCO's adoption of the Convention on the Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritages in 2003, the Chinese government has pushed ahead with efforts to explore and protect intangible cultural heritage items and have them registered as world intangible cultural heritages. Thus, Benchaogangmu (本草綱目) and Huangdineijing (黃帝內經) were listed on UNESCO's Memory of the World Register while Chinese acupuncture and moxibustion were registered as world intangible cultural heritage properties. For Traditional Korean Medicine skills to be listed as world intangible cultural heritage properties, steps should be taken first to include the skills in the list of domestic intangible cultural heritage items and to make further explorations in the sector. Such efforts are also important in terms of the need to establish the legitimacy of Traditional Korean Medicines.

  • In this study, 64 Korean herbal medicines have been investigated with an in vitro evaluation systems using glycation end products (AGEs) formation inhibitory activity. Of these, 30 herbal medicines ($IC_{50}&lt;50{\mu}g/ml$) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Of these, four herbal medicines ($IC_{50}&lt;5{\mu}g/ml$) were found to have significant AGEs formation inhibitory activity. Particularly, Cornus controversa (branches and leaves), Acer ginnala (stems and leaves), Platycarya strobilacea (flowers) and Picrasma quassioides (stems), showed more potent inhibitory activity (approximately 17-27 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine ($IC_{50}=77.04{\mu}g/ml$).

Particularly, herbal medicines Punica granatum (peels), Terminalia chebula (fruits), Rheum palmatum (roots), Oxyria digyna (stems and leaves), Anisodus luridus (roots) and Quercus schottkyana(stems and leaves) showed more potent inhibitory activity (approximately 9-43 fold) than the positive control aminoguanidine ($IC_{50}=77.04{\mu}g/ml$).

Results and Conclusions Most of Herbs for the Soeumin were processed for filling up BoMyungGiJu(保命之主).
