  • Protulaca oleracea, a widely distributed weed, has been reported to exhibit different health promoting effects. The objective of this study was to evaluate the anti-oxidative and anti-inflammatory effects of P. oleracea on LPS-stimulated AGS cells. The cytotoxicity of P. oleracea in AGS cells was examined by MTT assay. The anti-oxidative effects of P. oleracea were examined by DPPH assay. RT-PCR was carried out to examine the effect of P. oleracea in the mRNA expression of different inflammatory mediators. MTT assay revealed that P. oleracea have almost no cytotoxity in AGS cells. DPPH radical scavenging activities were better than butylated hydroxyl toluene (BHT). The mRNA expression of different endogenous anti-oxidative enzymes (SOD2, GPx3 and catalase) were preserved by P. oleracea in AGS cells. The nitric oxide production and expression of iNOS in LPS stimulated RAW264.7 were suppressed in P. oleracea treated groups. Based on these findings, P. oleracea has protective anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory effects.

Results & Conclusions : Dizziness was researched constantly since 1998 and 7 clinical stuides were issued 2007, the most. The journal which the most studies were presented was Journal of korean oriental internal medicine(12 studies over 60, 20%). Original article were 12(20.0%) and case reports were 48(80.0%) among 60 studies. BPPV was reported as a etiologic disease on 9 studies(20.45%) among 44 studies. VAS was used mainly as dizziness assessment tools of studies(26 studies over 38, 68.42%). 9 studies(15.0%) got evaluation of disease pattern and process among 60. Banhabaekchulcheonma-tang was reported as a herbal medicine prescription on 9 over 44 studies(20.45%) and ST36 was chosen acupuncture point most(24 over 45 studies, 53.33%). It doesn't have enough representativenes but has meaning to apprehend present tendency to treat dizziness in Korean medicine clinical studies.

Results : Clinical study, which vascular dementia were treated with herbal medicine, were 12. Among these 12 articles, 6 were case study, 1 was Controlled Clinical Trial and 5 were Ramdomized Controlled Trial (RCT). High frequently used herbal materials were Ginseng Radix (9 times), Cnidii Rhizoma (8 times), Glycyrrhizae Radix, Citri Pericarpium, Astragali Radix and Angelicae Gigantis Radix (6 times). Conclusions : We could know frequent-used herbal medicine for vascular dementia. To be aware of the frequently used herbal medicine for vascular dementia can be helpful in adding herbal materials to prescription in a clinical treatment and development of new drugs.

  • In this study, we investigated how prescriptions from "Sanghallon(傷寒論)", such as Oryeongsan(五笭散), Banhasasimtang(半夏瀉心湯), Dohaekseunggitang(桃核承氣湯), Jukyeopseokgotang(竹葉石膏湯), were applicated in Onbyeongjobyeon(溫病條辦). When applying prescriptions from "Sanghallon" onto Onbyeong(溫病), Odang had replaced warm, dry herbs with cool herbs which generate body fluid, considering general characteristics of onbyeong that may easily dry up and injure body fluid. In the case of Seuponbyeong(濕溫病), however, warm, dry herbs were also used, as well. Odang did not persist in the general characteristic of onbyeong, but composed prescriptions only based on pathological condition. From this, one can point out his precise thinking of Byeonjeung(辯證), and pragmatic nature of his study.

  • BACGROUND: To examine effect of omahwan(烏麻丸)-赤何首烏(Polygonum multiflorum THUNB.), 白何首烏(Cynanchum wilfordii H.), 黑芝流(Sesamum indicum L.)-on the aged human immune system a series of humoral immunological parameters was compared in aged female (age 60-70 years) before and after administration of omahwan(烏麻丸). METHODS: Peripheral blood was obtained from fifteen healthy young (age 20-29, mean=66.3) female volunteers. B cell, T cell(T cells, T helper, and T suppressor/ cytotoxic) subsets was examined with specific monoclonal antibodies and isotype controls, using dural color flow cytometer IL-2 was examined with ELISA kit RESULT: By comparing the immune characteristics of the younger and elder groups the total ratio of T-cell, CD8 T-cell and quantify of IL-2 was significantly lower while CD4/CDB ratio was considerably greater in the elder group. ( p(0.05, student t-test) After giving Omahwan for 30 days to the elder group, by comparing the ratio before and after Prescription the total T cell and CD8 T cell ratio was considerably greater after prescription (p(0.05, Paired t-test) The quantity of IL-2 tended to increase after prescription but has no statistical meaning. CONCLUSION: The results indicate that administration of Omahwan(烏麻丸) differentially affects various aspects of the immune system in aged human.
