Solvent extraction of Ni(II) into a chloroform by using salen[N,N'-Bis (salicylidene)-ethylenediamine] as a ligand has been studied. Salen was synthesized from ethylenediamine and salicylaldehyde by simple condensation reaction in an ethanol. Salen formed a 1 : 1 complex with Ni(II) and its extraction constant was $10^{5.12}$. For the determination of Ni(II) in sea water samples, some experimental conditions such as pH of solution, amount of salen, acid type and concentration for back extraction, extraction time, and influence of foreign ions were optimized by using a synthetic sea water. The sea water of which the composition was similar to a natural sea water was synthesized in this laboratory. Trace Ni(II) was extracted into the chloroform in the weak basic solution above pH 8. And the nickel could be quantitatively extracted with the concentration of salen higher than $1.2{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$. This concentration was more than 180 times of Ni(II) in the solution with a mole ratio. Real samples of Korean coastal sea water were analyzed under optimized conditions. Even though Ni(II) was not detected in these samples. Recoveries more than 98% were obtained in the samples which 40 ng/mL of Ni(II) was spiked. And detection limit of proposed method was 1.3 ng/mL. From these results, it could be known that salen of this type would be applied for the determination of trace metals as an organic chelating reagent.
For the development of new agrochemical fungicide 3-amino-2-phenylimino-1,3-thiazolines 2 were designed through the molecular modification based on isostere concept of 3-methyl-2-phenylimino-1,3-thiazolines 1 which showed antifungal activity against rice blast. All the compounds 2 were fit Lipinski rule and they had higher solubility in water than that of 1 by virtual calculation. We constructed 195 kinds of focused library of 3-amino-2-phenylimino-1,3-thiazolines through 6H-[1,3,4]thiadiazines (195 compounds) which synthesized from the reaction of thiourea 4 with $\gamma$-chloroacetoacetanilides 5.
Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are associated with the invasion and metastasis of malignant tumors composed of cancer cells in an increased state of expression. This study evaluates the inhibitory effect of Carex pumila on MMP-2 and MMP-9 activity in phorbol-12-myristate-13-acetate (PMA)-stimulated HT-1080 human fibrosarcoma cells using gelatin zymography, MMPs enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and Western blot assay. C. pumila was extracted twice with dichloromethane ($CH_2Cl_2$) and methanol (MeOH). Treatment with $CH_2Cl_2$ extract and MeOH extract in PMA-stimulated HT-1080 cells effectively reduced the production of MMP-2 and 9. Also, the combined crude extracts ($CH_2Cl_2$ and MeOH) significantly inhibited the enzymatic activities and the expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in mRNA and protein levels. The combined crude extracts were partitioned between $CH_2Cl_2$ and water. The organic layer was further fractionated with n-hexane, 85% aqueous methanol (85% aq.MeOH) and the aqueous layer was separated into n-butanol and water, successively. Of the fractions, 85% aq.MeOH fraction showed the highest inhibitory activity of MMP-2 and MMP-9 in gelatin zymography and MMP ELISA kit. Furthermore, 85% aq.MeOH fraction most significantly suppressed cell migration. In RT-PCR and Western blot assay, n-butanol and 85% aq.MeOH fractions exerted the greatest inhibition on mRNA and protein expression of MMP-2 and MMP-9, respectively. As a result, C. pumila can be used as a good anti-invasive agent source.
AMX is one of extremely high mutagenic compound produced from the reaction of the chlorine and the organic compound during the disinfection of tap water. In this paper, the chemical derivatization of MX with 2% sulfuric acid-methanol, iso-propanol, sec-butanol and n-butanol derivatives for the GC/MS analysis were tested or compared. Limit of detection for the EI and NCI mode were 25 pg and 1.25 pg, respectively. The good linear calibration curve was obtained the range of 25~2500 pg by EI and NCI

In order to improve applicability of a microbial fuel cell the laboratory-scaled study has been performed by adopting an air-cathode MFC system with high concentrated anaerobic slugies in this study. The concentrations of microbes are grouped into three types, Type A (TS 1.7%), Type B (TS 1.1%) and Type C (TS 0.51%). The open circuit voltage $(V_{oc})$ characteristics showed that the medium microbes concentration of 1.10% (Type B) kept a constant voltage of 1.0 V for 150 hours, which showed the longest time among three types (Type A and Type C). The discharge charge curves for a closed circuit with $500 \Omega$ also showed that Type B generated a stable discharge voltage of 0.8 V for a longer time as in the open circuit voltage case. This could be explained by the relatively large amount of the attached microbes. Under the $V_{oc}$condition the COD removal efficiency of Type B was found to be low for a long time, but those of Type A and C were found to be high for a short period of time. Therefore, the suspended microbes could decrease the coulombic efficiency. It was concluded that the high $V_{oc}$ was caused by low COD and the $V_{oc}$ became low after the COD removal. The COD reduction resulted in an unstable and low working voltage. From the polarization characteristics Type A was found to show the highest power density of $193\;mW/m^2$ with a fill factor of 0.127 due to the relatively high remaining COD even after the MFC reaction.

This study was performed to investigate the removal characteristics of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in the gasphase biofilters, and to propose a stoichiometric analysis approach to characterize biological reaction through carbon mass balance. The VOCs studied were toluene, styrene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK), and methyl isobutyl ketone (MIBK) as a single substrate for each biofilter. The critical loading rate was determined to be $46.9\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, $25.8\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, $96.3\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$, and $66.5\;g/m^3{\cdot}hr$ for toluene, styrene, MEK, and MIBK, respectively. The obtained results indicated that the critical loading rate was well correlated the octanol-water partition coefficient. In the analysis of carbon mass balance, carbon recovery to $CO_2$ became relatively lower as substrate loadings increased, but higher for carbon recovery to biomass. Stoichiometric analysis revealed that biomass yield increased as substrate loadings increased, and its coefficient (g biomass/g substrate) varied from 0.31 to 0.57 for toluene, 0.29 to 0.57 for styrene, 0.08 to 0.56 for MEK, and 0.14 to 0.53 for MIBK.
$Y_2O_3$ nanomaterials have been widely used in transparent ceramics and luminescent devices. Recently, many studies have focused on controlling the size and morphology of $Y_2O_3$ in order to obtain better material performance. $Y_2O_3$ powders were prepared under a modified solvothermal condition involving precipitation from metal nitrates with aqueous ammonium hydroxide. The powders were obtained at temperatures at $250^{\circ}C$ after a 6h process. The properties of the $Y_2O_3$ powders were studied as a function of the solvent ratio. The synthesis of $Y_2O_3$ crystalline particles is possible under a modified solvothermal condition in a water/ethylene glycol solution. Solvothermal processing condition parameters including the pH, reaction temperature and solvent ratio, have significant effects on the formation, phase component, morphology and particle size of yttria powders. Ethylene glycol is a versatile, widely used, inexpensive, and safe capping organic molecule for uniform nanoparticles besides as a solvent. The characterization of the synthesized Y2O3 powders were studied by XRD, SEM (FE-SEM) and TG/DSC. An X-ray diffraction analysis of the synthesized powders indicated the formation of the $Y_2O_3$ cubic structure upon calcination. The average crystalline sizes and distribution of the synthesized $Y_2O_3$ powders was less than 2 um and broad, respectively. The synthesized particles were spherical and hexagonal in shape. The morphology of the synthesized powders changed with the water and ethylene glycol ratio. The average size and shape of the synthesized particles could be controlled by adjusting the solvent ratio.
An electrolytic oxidation process was applied to remove odorous compounds from non-point odor sources including wastewater pipelines and manholes. In this study, a distance between the anode and the cathode of the electrolytic process was varied as a system operating parameters, and its effects on odor removal efficiencies and reaction characteristics were investigated. Odor precursors such as sediment organic matters and reduced sulfur/nitrogen compounds were effectively oxidized in the electrolytic process, and a change in oxidation-reduction potential (ORP) indicated that an stringent anaerobic condition shifted to a mild anoxic condition rapidly. At an electrode distance of 1 cm and an applied voltage of 30 V, a system current was maintained at 1 A, and the current density was 23.1 $mA/cm^{2}$. Under the condition, the removal efficiency of hydrogen sulfide in gas phase was found to be 100%, and 93% of ammonium ion was removed from the liquid phase during the 120 minute operating period. Moreover, the sulfate ion (${SO_4}^{2-}$) concentration increased about three times from its initial value due to the active oxidation. As the specific power consumption (i.e., the energy input normalized by the effective volume) increased, the oxidation progressed rapidly, however, the oxidation rate was varied depending on target compounds. Consequently, a threshold power consumption for each odorous compound needs to be experimentally determined for an effective application of the electrolytic oxidation.
