  • Electronic and photovoltaic characteristics of two sensitizers (TA-BTD-CA and TA-BTD-St-CA), composed of a different $\pi$-conjugation in the linker group, have been investigated by theoretical and experimental methods. The electronic structure, transition dipole moment and oscillator strengths of two sensitizers have been scrutinized by using density functional theory (DFT) and time-dependent DFT (TD-DFT) method. The LUMO level and the oscillator strength of TA-BTD-St-CA was higher than that of TA-BTD-CA, which may facilitate the electron injection process as well as increase the absorption coefficient. The relative efficiencies of the electron injection from the excited sensitizer to nanocrystalline TiO2 and SnO2 films have also been investigated by nanosecond transient absorption spectroscopy. The relative electron injection efficiency of TA-BTD-St-CA exhibited similar injection efficiency for two different semiconductors. However, in the case of TA-BTD-CA sensitizer, electron injection into SnO2 was approximately three times larger than that into TiO2. This enhancement of electron injection of TA-BTD-CA for the SnO2 is due to the increment of the driving force caused by positive shift of conduction band of semiconductor, which was also confirmed from the investigation for the photovoltaic characteristics according to the electrolyte additive, such as LiI additive.

  • Hydrophilic contact lens was prepared by dispersing MXene material in a hydrogel mixture, and the purpose of this study was to evaluate its properties as an ophthalmic material. The MXene used in the experiment was manufactured through an etching process using titanium aluminum carbide 312 [Ti3AlC2] and hydrofluoric acid [HF]. For the preparation of hydrophilic contact lenses, 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate [HEMA], a photoinitiator 2-hydroxy-2-methylpropiophenone [2H2M], and a cross-linker Ethylene glycol dimethacrylate [EGDMA] were used, and UV-rays was irradiated for 50 seconds for photopolymerization. Optical transmittance, refractive index, water content, contact angle, electromagnetic wave shielding ability, and photo-thermal conversion effect were measured to evaluate the physical properties of the manufactured contact lens. Compared to MXene materials, MXene mixed with Dimethyl sulfoxide [DMSO] had superior dispersion ability in organic solvents, and the transparency of the prepared hydrophilic contact lenses was high. MXene did not significantly affect the refractive index and water content, and improved the wettability of the contact lens. In addition, the MXene material used as an additive showed electromagnetic wave shielding ability and photo-thermal conversion effect based on its excellent electrical conductivity. It is judged that the mixture using MXene as an additive can be used as a functional contact lens material for electromagnetic wave shielding and ocular photo-thermal therapy.

  • Intensive researches have been focused on the 3-dimensional packaging technology using through silicon via (TSV) to overcome the limitation in Cu interconnection scaling. Void-free filling of TSV by the Cu electrodeposition is required for the fabrication of reliable electronic devices. It is generally known that sufficient inhibition on the top and the sidewall of TSV, accompanying the selective Cu deposition on the bottom, enables the void-free bottom-up filling. Organic additives contained in the electrolyte locally determine the deposition rate of Cu inside the TSV. Investigation on the additive chemistry is essential for understanding the filling mechanisms of TSV based on the effects of additives in the Cu electrodeposition process. In this review, we introduce various filling mechanisms suggested by analyzing the additives effect, research on the three-additive system containing new levelers synthesized to increase efficiency of the filling process, and methods to improve the filling performance by modifying the functional groups of the additives or deposition mode.

  • In this study, we tried to improve the cycling performance of lithium-ion batteries by suppressing decomposition of the electrolyte solution containing fluorsilane-based additive. Trifluoropropyltrimethoxysilane was electrochemically oxidized and reduced prior to the decomposition of the liquid electrolyte composed of lithium salt and carbonate-based organic solvent. Thus, the stable solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) layer on both negative electrode and positive electrode was formed, and it was confirmed that the cycling performance of lithium-ion batteries assembled with electrolyte solution containing 5 wt.% trifluoropropyltrimethoxysilane was the mostly enhanced. The products formed on electrodes were analyzed by the SEM and XPS analysis, and it was demonstrated that trifluoropropyltrimethoxysilane can be one of the promising SEI-forming additives.

  • Imidazolium based zwitterions, 1,2-dimethylimidazolium-3-n-propanesulfonate (DMIm-3S) and 1-Butylimidazolium-3-n-butanesulphonate (BIm-4S), were synthesized, and utilized them as additive for Li ion cell comprising of graphite anode and $LiCoO_2$ cathode. The use of 10 wt% of DMIm-3S in 1 M $LiPF_6$, EC-EMCDMC (1:1:1 (v/v)) resulted in the increased high rate charge-discharge performance. The low temperature performance of the Li ion cells at about −20 ${^{\circ}C}$ was also enhanced by these zwitterion additives. The DMIm- 3S additive resulted in the better capacity retention by the Li-ion cells even after 120 cycles with 100% depth of discharge (DOD) at 1 C rate in room temperature. Surface morphology of both graphite and $LiCoO_2$ electrode before and after 300 cycles was studied by scanning electron microscopy. An analogous study was performed using liquid electrolyte without any additive.

  • The effect of draw ratio (8, 10, 12, 14 times) and additive CaCO3 content (0, 0.5, 1.0, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 wt%) on the properties of high-performance PE monofilament was investigated in this study. As the draw ratio increased (8-14 times), the melting enthalpy (ΔHf), crystallinity, specific gravity, and tensile strength increased significantly. However, the draw ratio had little effect on the melting temperature (Tm) and crystallization temperature (Tc). The seawater fastness (stain and fade) of the hydrophobic PE monofilament prepared in this study showed an excellent grade of 4-5 in all draw ratios. To investigate the effect of the additive CaCO3 content on the properties of high-performance PE monofilament, the draw ratio was fixed at 14 times. It was found that the tensile strength of the PE monofilament sample containing 0.5 wt% of CaCO3 was much greater compared to the sample without CaCO3, but the elongation of the sample containing 0.5 wt% of CaCO3 was much less than the sample with 0 wt% CaCO3. However, in the case of the sample containing more than 0.5 wt% CaCO3, the tensile strength slightly decreased and the elongation slightly increased as the CaCO3 content increased. The seawater fastness (stain and fade) of the hydrophobic PE monofilament showed excellent grades of 4-5, regardless of the amount of additives. From the above results, it was found that the maximum draw ratio of 14 times with an additive of 0.5 wt% CaCO3 are the optimal conditions for manufacturing high-performance marine fusion materials with various fineness (denier) with high strength and low elongation.

  • The present study was conducted to investigate effective starter culture to improve biological activity of Asarum sieboldii. Antibacterial activity, antioxidant activity and reduction of enteric rumen methane production were used as criterions for biological activity. Ground A. sieboldii was added in MRS broth at 10% (w/v) and fermented by different starter cultures. Weissella confusa NJ28, Weissella cibaria NJ33, Lactobacillus curvatus NJ40, Lactobacillus brevis NJ42, Lactobacillus plantarum NJ45 and Lactobacillus sakei NJ48 were used for starter culture strains. Each starter culture was inoculated with 1% (v/v) ratio and fermentation was performed at $30^{\circ}C$ with agitation (150 rpm) for 48 h. MRS broth for the control was employed without starter culture. Then the fermentation growth was dried and extracted using ethyl alcohol. The growth of starter culture was detected at NJ40, NJ42, NJ45 and NJ48. And the highest cell growth was found in NJ40. Antibacterial activity against to Staphylococcus aureus, Listeria monocytogens, Mannheimia haemolytica and Salmonella gallinarum were observed in the extract fermented by NJ40 and NJ45. All treatments showed antioxidant activities, however, there were no significant differences (p>0.05). In in vitro rumen fermentation, negative control (NC) and positive control (PC) were assigned to without extract and with non-fermented A. sieboldii extract. Significant suppression of gas productions were detected in positive control and treatments compared to negative control (p<0.05). However, total volatile fatty acid production was not suppressed. Significant methane reduction per total volatile fatty acid productions were found in positive control and NJ45 treatment (p<0.05). The present study suggested a fermentation of A. sieboldii using NJ45 strain could improve its biological activity and make possible for its use in bio additive for enteric rumen methane mitigation without suppression of animal productivity.

  • This study was conducted to investigate for the natural methane emission inhibitor as a feed additive no adversely effect on rumen fermentation. Five different Control (Wheat barn (0.05 g), MRA(Methane Reduction Additive)-1 (Allium fistulosum L. (0.05 g)), MRA-2 (Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (0.025 g) + Wheat barn (0.025 g) mixed), MRA-3 (Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (0.025 g) + Wheat barn (0.025 g) mixed), and MRA-4 (Allium fistulosum L. (0.02 g) + Tannic acid (0.02 g) + Wheat barn (0.01 g) mixed) contents were used to perform 3, 6, 9, 12, 24 and 48 h incubation for in vitro fermentation. Ruminal pH values were ranged within normal ruminal microbial fermentation. Dry matter digestibility was not significantly different across the treatments during the whole fermentation time. Also, the result of microbial growth had no adversely effect on during the whole fermentation time. At 24 h, methane emission was significantly lower (P<0.05) than all treatments except to MRA-1. Especially, MRA-4 carbon dioxide emission was significantly lower (P<0.05) than control at 9, 24 and 48 h incubation. In addition MRA-4 propionate concentration was significantly higher (P<0.05) than control at 24 h incubation. The result of RT-PCR Ciliate-associated methanogens were significantly lower (P<0.05) at MRA-1, MRA-3 and MRA-4 than control at 24 h incubation. Based on the present results, MRA-4 could be suggestible methane emission inhibitor as a natural feed additive.

  • Objective: To develop the fermentation quality and chemical composition of alfalfa (Medicago sativa Lam.) silage, plants were inoculated with different lactic acid bacteria (LAB) strains at field 24 hours before harvest. Methods: The treatment groups were as follow: silage without additive as a control and inoculated with each strains of Lactobacillus brevis (LS-55-2-2), Leuconostoc citerum (L. citerum; L-70-6-1), Lactobacillus bifermentans (L. bifermentans; LS-65-2-1), Lactobacillus plantarum (L. plantarum; LS-3-3) and L. plantarum (LS-72-2). All the silages were stored at 25℃. Parameters such as pH, microorganism and volatile fatty acid contents, crude protein, neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, net gas, metabolizable energy, organic matter digestibility, dry matter intake and relative feed value were measured to determine fermentation quality, chemical compositions and relative feed value of alfalfa silages. Results: Significant differences were found among the control and treated groups in terms of pH and microorganism contents at all opening times and crude protein, net gas, metabolizable energy and organic matter digestibility of final silage. The pH values ranged from 4.70 to 5.52 for all treatments and control silage had the highest value of overall treatments at T75d silages. Volatile fatty acid of silages was not influenced significantly by inoculations. However, lactic acid content of L. bifermentans (LS-65-2-1) was higher than the other treatments. The highest metabolizable energy and organic matter digestibility were recorded from L. citerum (L-70-6-1) inoculation. In addition, no significant differences were found among treatments in terms of neutral detergent fiber, acid detergent fiber, dry matter intake and relative feed value. Conclusion: Among the treated LAB isolates, L. bifermentans came into prominence especially in terms of organic acid composition and quality characters of silages.

  • Solution-processible hybrid bipolar field effect transistors (HBFETs) with balanced hole and electron mobilities were fabricated using a combination of the organic p-type poly (3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) layer and inorganic n-type ZnO material. The hole and electron mobilities were first optimized in single layer devices by using acetonitrile as a solvent additive to process the P3HT and annealing to process the ZnO layer. The highest hole mobility of the P3HT-only-devices with 5% acetonitrile was 0.15 cm2V-1s-1, while the largest electron mobility was observed in the ZnO-only-devices annealed at $200^{\circ}C$ and found to be $7.2{\times}10-2cm2V-1s-1$. The inorganic-organic HBFETs consisting of P3HT with 5% acetonitrile and ZnO layer annealed at $200^{\circ}C$ exhibited balanced hole and electron mobilities of $4.0{\times}10-2$ and $3.9{\times}10-2cm2V-1s-1$, respectively. The effect on surface morphology and crystallinity by adding acetonitrile and thermal annealing were investigated through X-ray diffraction and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Our findings indicate that techniques demonstrated herein are of great utility in improving the performance of inorganic-organic hybrid devices
