  • Various dimensions of watershed structural/non-structural planning can be applied in comprehensive flood mitigation plan in a river basin. Especially structural counterplans have very broad and diverse nature as flood control facilities. It is not easy to find the optimum alternative to maximize the ability of a basin to reduce flood risk using a combination of structural counterplans. In addition, there is no standard for evaluating the performance of structural counterplans and for selecting optimal combination of them. This study focused on how to select the best alternative of a comprehensive watershed structural plan from various flood defense alternative candidates. By introducing an analytic hierarchy process, we would like to show how we decide the best alternative using standard worksheets developed in this study for economics and policy evaluation, and Expert Choice 11.5, which calculates weights for evaluation items. Based on the results from this study, we would like to suggest the best practice of a standardized watershed plan for flood protection.

  • In this study, we manufactured mung bean Dasik (pattern pressed candy) after selecting the optimum roasting conditions through physiochemical analysis and sensory evaluation. Then anti-oxidative abilities of roasted mung bean were measured in order to develop beauty food (Dasik) using roasted mung bean. In the content of vitexin and isovitexin of roasted mung bean, about 10 times the vitexin in the seed(60.85 mg/g) is found in the skin of raw mung bean, and about 9 times the isovitexin in the seed(71.42 mg/g) is also found in the peel. As a result of analyzing the seed and peel of mung bean after roasting it for 10, 20 and 30 minutes respectively, the optimum roasting condition is thought to be $110^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes as the contents of vitexin and isovitexin showed the highest values of 104.94 mg/g and 122.02 mg/g respectively when the mung bean was roasted at $110^{\circ}C$ for 30 minutes. In the anti-oxidative activity evaluation of the optimum mung bean Dasik, the total content of phenol was shown to be 0.15 mg/mL, and the total content of flavonoid was shown to be 0.026 mg/mL. The DPPH radical scavenging ability showed a high vitality of 58.19%, and the ABTS radical scavenging ability was shown to be 13.26%.

  • A modified perturbation method is proposed to optimize the beam pattern of thinned microphone arrays. Both microphone spacing and array weight are iteratively adjusted via successive perturbation to achieve an optimum beam pattern in a Dolph Chebyshev sense. To improve the sidelobe performance, an alternative perturbation with respect to microphone spacing and array weight is implemented. Also, a linear space-tapering is employed in the perturbation process. It is demonstrated that the proposed approaches successfully yield sidelobe performances comparable to that of a normal array. Computer simulation results are presented.

  • This paper proposes an alternative stratified randomized response model based on the model of Singh and Joarder (1997). It is shown numerically that the proposed stratified randomized response model is more efficient than Hong et al. (1994) (under proportional allocation) and Kim and Warde (2004) (under optimum allocation).

  • There has been considerable interest recently in the topic of renewable energy. This is primarily due to concerns about environmental impacts. Moreover, fluctuating and rising oil prices, increases in demand, supply uncertainties and other factors have led to increased calls for alternative energy sources. Small hydropower, especially using water supply system, attracts high attentions because of relatively lower cost and smaller space requirements to construct the plant. Moreover. newly developed positive displacement turbine has high acceptability for the system. Therefore, the purpose of this study is focused on the examination of the performance characteristics and proposition of a optimum design method of the turbine for the improvement of the performance. The results show that newly proposed optimum design method for the turbine has high accuracy of performance prediction and good applicability for the performance improvement of the turbine.

  • Selecting a railroad line requires the comparative evaluation of various elements. As a systematic approach to this selection it will be necessary to apply the VE study and the LCC analysis. This study proposes a methodology for selecting the optimum line of the ralroad using VE-LCC analysis. The VE study is performed by following four steps : Information analysis, Function analysis, Alternative evaluation, and Optimum plan selection. The economics evaluation in VE study is using LCC analysis and Sensitivity analysis. Cost items in LCC analysis are classified into bridge, tunnel, rail, and earthwork. We could select the optimum alte-rnatives considering not only cost elements hut also various evaluation element in VE-LCC analysis. • From the mid-1990s, the discussion on alternative schools began in earnest, and with the increasing interests in them, Korean parents' association of alternative education, KPAAE was launched formally in November, 2008. Among the alternative schools in the nation, thirteen urban alternative schools were studied and analyzed. The result indicated that they are being run by individuals and civic organizations with no approval and the facilities and spatial organization of the schools are poor, which is thought to be mainly due to financial reasons as well as the schools' educational goal that puts emphasis on experiences leading to utilize outside local facilities. With this background, the results from the analysis of the facility status and the spatial organization of urban alternative schools led us to understand the followings: First, it showed that per capita average of area of the urban alternative school is approximately 11.995m$^2$, less than 14N, the standard area of institutional schools. Second, depending on the form of facilities, the space of other facilities is shared to make up for insufficient space, and is utilized to a small degree and for multi-purposes. Third, the space reflects the disposition of subject students, and is located in the area with convenient traffic for students' attending the schools conveniently. Fourth, specialized space is run on the basis of educational goals, and the exploring of career and the improving of sociality are pursued through internship programs associated with local facilities. Thus, it is desirable for the minimum per capita area of the urban alternative school to meet 14N, the standard area of the institutional schools in order that the urban alternative school may overcome the spatial limitation and the financial hardship stemming from the practically difficult constructing of new buildings and the small scale operation, and it may make flexible use of the space, and the students may live their lives smoothly. Also, it is thought that for the activating of the urban alternative schools, the plans for utilizing various facilities associated with local facilities should be considered.

  • This paper proposes an alternative methodology for deciding an optimum deterministic reliability level (IRR; Installed Reserve Rate) by using probabilistic reliability criterion (LOLE; Loss of Load Expectation). Additionally, case studies using the proposed method induce the characteristics of relationship between the probabilistic reliability index (LOLE) and deterministic reliability index (IRR) for 2008 and 2010 years in Korea power system. The case study presents a possibility that an optimum IRR level in Korea can be assessed using the proposed method. Korea power system has been using the LOLE criterion to determine the adequacy of installed capacity (ICAP) requirement. The criterion in Korea is that the loss of load expectation shall not exceed the available capacity more than five day in ten years (=0.5[days/year]), The probabilistic reliability evaluation and production cost simulation program which is called PRASim is used in order to evaluate the relationship and optimum IRR in this paper.

  • Computer simulations were performed for Heating Ventilating and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems to figure out more efficient maintenance methods for the building used for adolescent trainees. This study aims at suggesting design alternatives for optimum operation and performing life cycle cost (LCC) for each alternative. First, the capacity of the heat source equipment was determined using annual maximum heating and cooling loads. Annual loads were calculated and applied to the alternative for the purpose of calculating annual energy cost. Second, several types of data were collected to predict energy cost. Finally, the pay back period for each alternative was calculated using total cost estimation during standard duration period. This study indicates that the absorption chiller that does not occupy most part of a mechanical room, and does not need much operation cost was most economical.
