  • The important function of Ball-Stop part is to operate power shift using suitable pneumatic force for vehicle with more than 5 ton when a driver changes gear. In this paper, we have applied the concept of the DFSS(Design for Six Sigma) to robust design of Ball-Stop part. First, we have found the control factors which could mainly influence the performance of the Ball-Stop part. The simulations of contact between head and detent pin was performed to evaluate effect of control factors according to DOE(Design of experiment) by using $ADAMS^{(R)}$. Finally, we have obtained optimal levels of each factors using $MINITAB^{(R)}$. Through the comparison of the result of optimized design with one of inintial design, we have verified the usefulness of DFSS method which can be applied to robust design of mechanical systems.

  • Recently, the polishing process using magnetorheological fluids(MR fluids) has been focused as a new ultra-precision polishing technology for micro and optical parts such as aspheric lenses, etc. This method uses MR fluid as a polishing media which contains required micro abrasives. In the MR polishing process, the surface roughness and material removal rate of a workpiece are affected by the process parameters, such as the properties of used nonmagnetic abrasives(particle material, size, aspect ratio and density, etc.), rotating wheel speed, imposed magnetic flux density and feed rate, etc. The objective of this research is to predict MRR according to the polishing conditions based on the multiple regression analysis. Three polishing parameters such as wheel speed, feed rates and current value were optimized. For experimental works, an orthogonal array L27(313) was used based on DOE(Design of Experiments), and ANOVA(Analysis of Variance) was carried out. Finally, it was possible to recognize that the sequence of the factors affecting MRR correspond to feed rate, current and wheel speed, and to determine a combination of optimal polishing conditions.

  • This article aims at presenting multi objective optimization of parameters that affect crashworthiness characteristics of bi-tubular structures using Taguchi method with grey relational analysis. To design the experiments, the $L_9$ orthogonal array has been used and based on that, the inner tubes have been fabricated by varying the three influence factors such as reference diameter, length difference and numbers of sides of the polygon with three levels, but all the outer cylinders have the same diameter and length 90 mm and 135 mm respectively. Then, the tailor made bi-tubular steel structures were subjected into quasi static axial compression. From the test results it is found that the crushing behaviors of bi-tubular structures with different combinations were fairly significant. The important responses (crashworthiness indicators) specific energy absorption and crush force efficiency have been evaluated from load - displacement curve. Finally optimal levels of parameters were identified using grey relational analysis, and significance of parameters was determined by analysis of variance. The optimum crashworthiness parameters are reference diameter 80 mm, length difference 0 mm and number of sides of polygon is 3, i.e., triangle within the selected nine bi-tube combinations.

  • Recently nano imprint lithography to fabricate photonic crystal on polymer is preferred because of its simplicity and short process time and ease of precise manufacturing. But, the technique requires the precise mold as an imprinting tool for good replication. These molds are made of the silicon, nickel and quartz. But this is not desirable due to complex fabrication process, high cost. So, we describe a simple, precise and low cost method of fabricating PDMS stamp to make the photonic crystals. In order to fabricate the PDMS mold, we make the original pattern with designed hole array by finding the optimal electron beam writing condition. And then, we have tried to fabricate PDMS mold by the replica molding with ultrasonic vibration and pressure system. We have used the cleaning process to solve the detaching problem on the interface. Using these methods, we acquired the PDMS mold for photonic crystals with characteristics of a good replication. And the accuracy of replication shows below 1% in 440nm at diameter and in 610nm at lattice constant by dimensional analysis by SEM and AFM.

  • The cryopump of the pulse tube type has been developed successfully, and manufacturing of a prototype pump is finished under leading of Woosung Vacuum. The target pumping speed of the prototype pump is above 3,600 L/s for nitrogen with the intake port of 14 inches I.D (16 inches O.D). For designing optimally the pump structure including the charcoal array, thermal shield, and baffle, the pumping speed was simulated for various configurations through Monte Carlo method. Pumping performances of the protype cryopump manufactured on the basis of optimal design were conformed experimentally with a standard test system and procedures. The measured $N_2$ pumping speed of the prototype cryopump was 4,600 L/s which agreed well with simulated one and exceeded the target value.

  • This paper proposes a design optimization approach for core of solenoid actuators by combining optimization techniques with the finite element method (FEM). A solenoid is an important element part which hydraulically controls a transmission system, etc. The demanded feature of the solenoid is that it performs an electromagnetic force output being constant regardless of the stroke and being proportional to coil current. The plunger compresses a spring with a minimum force of 12 N over an 1.7 mm travel. The orthogonal array, analysis of variance (ANOVA) techniques and response surface optimization, are employed to determine the main effects and their optimal design variables. The methodology is demonstrated as a optimization tool for the core design of a solenoid actuator.

  • This paper presents a hardware implementation of the STS diversity system, utilizing FPGAs and introduces the function and the design method of each of the modules of the system. In order to improve the performance of the implemented STS system which is an open loop transmit diversity system under fading environment, the exact estimation of the communication channel is essential. Therefore, we propose the optimal forgetting factor to estimate pilot channel in this paper, It is shown in this paper that the pilot channel is estimated using the forgetting factor of 0.7 without increasing the integration range of the pilot channel even when the power of pilot channel is not sufficiently large in CDMA 2000 1x signal environment.

  • This paper presents an optimal implementation of a Daubechies-based pipelined discrete wavelet packet transform (DWPT) processor using finite impulse response (FIR) filter banks. The feed-forward pipelined (FFP) architecture is exploited for implementation of the DWPT on the field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The proposed DWPT is based on an efficient transpose form structure, thereby reducing its computational complexity by half of the system. Moreover, the efficiency of the design is further improved by using a canonical-signed digit-based binary expression (CSDBE) and advanced functional sharing (AFS) methods. In this work, the AFS technique is proposed to optimize the convolution of FIR filter banks for DWPT decomposition, which reduces the hardware resource utilization by not requiring any embedded digital signal processing (DSP) blocks. The proposed AFS and CSDBE-based DWPT system is embedded on the Virtex-7 FPGA board for testing. The proposed design is implemented as an intellectual property (IP) logic core that can easily be integrated into DSP systems for sub-band analysis. The achieved results conclude that the proposed method is very efficient in improving hardware resource utilization while maintaining accuracy of the result of DWPT.

  • We perform disk-halo decomposition of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) using a novel HI velocity field extraction method, aimed at better deriving its HI kinematics and thus mass distribution in the galaxy including both baryons and dark matter. We decompose all the line-of-sight velocity profiles of the combined HI data cube of the LMC, taken from the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) and Parkes radio telescopes with an optimal number of Gaussian components. For this, we use a novel tool, the so-called BAYGAUD which performs profile decomposition based on Bayesian MCMC techniques. From this, we disentangle turbulent non-ordered HI gas motions from the decomposed gas components, and produce an HI bulk velocity field which better follows the global circular rotation of the galaxy. From a 2D tilted-ring analysis of the HI bulk velocity field, we derive the rotation curve of the LMC after correcting for its transverse, nutation and precession motions. The dynamical contributions of baryons like stars and gaseous components which are derived using the Spitzer 3.6 micron image and the HI data are then subtracted from the total kinematics of the LMC. Here, we present the bulk HI rotation curve, the mass models of stars and gaseous components, and the resulting dark matter density profile of the LMC.

  • A high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) with diode array detector (DAD) method was established for the discrimination of a folk medicine Forsythia suspensa and Forsythia viridissima. Five and three representative metabolites of the lignan and phenolic glycoside classes were selected for the analysis from F. suspensa and F. viridissima, respectively. The optimal chromatographic conditions were obtained on an ODS column (5 ${\mu}m$, $4.6{\times}250$ mm) with the column temperature at $40^{\circ}C$. The mobile phase was composed of methanol and 0.3% acetic acid using an isocratic elution with the flow rate 1 mL/min. Detection wavelength was set at 280 nm. All calibration curves showed good linear regression ($r^2$ > 0.996) within test ranges. Limits of detection (LOD) and limits of quantitation (LOQ) values were lower than 0.096 and 0.291 ${\mu}g/mL$, respectively. The developed method provided satisfactory precision and accuracy with overall intra-day and inter-day variations of 0.07-0.63% and 0.14-0.62%, respectively, and the overall recoveries of 97.79-102.46% for all of the compounds analyzed. In addition, effectiveness of diverse extraction methods was compared to each other for the development of standard analytical method. The verified method was successfully applied to the quantitative determination of representative metabolites in fifty-three commercial F. suspensa samples and fifteen commercial F. viridissima samples from diverse sources. The overall analytical results showed the unequivocal differences in bioactive constituents between F. suspensa and F. viridissima.
