An expansion technique for tolerance approach to sensitivity analysis in linear programming

  • The tolerance approach to the sensitivity analysis in linear programming considers simultaneous and independent variations in the coefficients of the objective funciton or of the right-hand side terms and gives a region in which the coefficients and terms and gives a region in which the coefficients and terms can be changed and still the current optimal basis B for the original problem remains as an optimal basis for the perturbed problem. In this paper we describe a procedure that expands a region S obtained by the tolerance approch into a larger region R, so that more variations in the objective function coefficients or the right-hand side terms are permissible.

Application of the first-order perturbation method to optimal structural design

  • An application of the perturbation method to optimum structural design with random parameters is presented. It is formulated on the basis of the first-order stochastic finite element perturbation method. It also takes into full account the stress, displacement and eigenvalue constraints, together with the rates of change of the random variables. A method for calculating the sensitivity coefficients in regard to the governing equation and the first-order perturbed equation has been derived, by using a direct differentiation approach. A gradient-based nonlinear programming technique is used to solve the problem. The numerical results are specifically noted, where the stiffness parameter and external load are treated as random variables.

  • A standard of estimation is used as a basis for estimating the predetermined amount of public construction. However, they raise several points of reasonable labor to be presented to a standard of estimation. For this reason, it is difficult to make a reasonable and efficient estimation of the costs, and this situation presents an urgent need for an accurate way of making such a calculation.This study analyzed the productivity of reinforced concrete work by the CYCLONE model, and the estimated optimal labor through sensitivity analysis, and presented the model on the number of optimal labor through sensitivity analysis.

  • This study presents an effective stiffness-based optimal technique to control quantitatively lateral drift for 3-D steel frameworks subject to lateral loads. To this end, the displacement sensitivity depending on behavior characteristics of 3-D steel frameworks is established. Also, approximation concept that can preserve the generality of the mathematical programming and can efficiently solve large scale problems is introduced. Resizing sections in the stiffness-based optimal design are assumed to be uniformly varying in size. Two types of 30-story frames are presented to illustrate the features of the Quantitative lateral drift control technique proposed in this study.

  • This paper presents a screening technique for greatly reducing the computation involved in determining the optimal location and types of Flexible AC Transmission System (FACTS) devices in a large power system. The first-order sensitivities of the generation cost for various FACTS devices are derived. This technique requires solving only one optimal power flow (OPF) to obtain sensitivities with respect to FACTS device control variables for every transmission line To implement a sensitivity-based screening technique, we used a new UPFC model, which consists of an ideal transformer with a complex turns ratio and a variable shunt admittance. A S-bus system based on the IEEE 14-bus system was used to illustrate the technique.

  • Analyzing acoustic-structural systems such as automobiles and aircraft the FRF-based substructuring method is one of the most powerful tools. In this paper, an optimization procedure far the engine mount system of passenger car has been presented using the design sensitivity analysis based on the multi-domain FRF-based substructuring formulation. The proposed method is applied to an optimization problem of the engine mount system, of which objective is to minimize the interior sound over the concerned rpm range. The design variables selected are the stiffnesses of the engine mounts and bushes. Plugging the gradient information calculated by the proposed method into nonlinear optimization software, we can obtain the optimal stiffnesses of the engine mounts and bushings through design iterations. The optimized interior noise in the passenger car shows that the proposed method is very useful in the realistic situation.

  • A new mathematical model to determine the optimal gas temperatures in reheating furnace was proposed for the good quality of products. This model employs sensitivity method to calculate the optimal gas temperatures in each zone for heating the slab up to its discharging target temperature and for heating it uniformly. This method was validated by showing that the calculated discharging temperature of the slab was in a good agreement with its prescribed discharging target one through an off-line simulation.

  • In this paper, a new guidance law to reduce sensitivity to the initial heading errors is proposed. In order for shaping the input weights over the flight, we introduce the distribution functions expressed in terms of time-to-go and its inverse term. By applying the optimal control theory with the synthesized weights, the homing guidance law is derived. Also the characteristics of the proposed law are examined. Various computer simulations show the good performance of the proposed guidance.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate stability of a high speed train and to propose optimal design using sensitivity analysis of suspension design parameters. A form of equations of motion in tangent track and curve track is obtained based on each creep force. Tangent track and curve track equations include lateral, rolling and yawing motions of wheel sets, bogies, and carbodies. Three track cases have been chosen to stability assesment of a high speed train analysis. Sensitivity equations are set up by directly differentiating the equations of motion. This study def'.led Stability performance index of a high speed train in tangent track and curve track. The relative magnitude of the effect of suspension parameters on the critical speed is computed, and by adjusting these parameters, the increase of the critical speed is achieved.
