An Improved Mean-Variance Optimization for Nonconvex Economic Dispatch Problems

  • This paper presents an efficient approach for solving economic dispatch (ED) problems with nonconvex cost functions using a 'Mean-Variance Optimization (MVO)' algorithm with Kuhn-Tucker condition and swap process. The aim of the ED problem, one of the most important activities in power system operation and planning, is to determine the optimal combination of power outputs of all generating units so as to meet the required load demand at minimum operating cost while satisfying system equality and inequality constraints. This paper applies Kuhn-Tucker condition and swap process to a MVO algorithm to improve a global minimum searching capability. The proposed MVO is applied to three different nonconvex ED problems with valve-point effects, prohibited operating zones, transmission network losses, and multi-fuels with valve-point effects. Additionally, it is applied to the large-scale power system of Korea. The results are compared with those of the state-of-the-art methods as well.

플라즈마트론을 이용한 바이오가스 개질로부터 수소생산 (Hydrogen Gas Production from Biogas Reforming using Plasmatron)

  • 고온 플라즈마가 적용된 플라즈마트론을 이용하여 바이오가스 개질을 통해 수소를 생산하는데 있어서 최적 운전 조건에 대해 연구하였다. 음식물 쓰레기의 혐기성 발효조에서 생성된 바이오가스 구성비($CH_4/CO_2$)가 1.03, 1.28, 2.12인 바이오가스로 개질실험을 수행하고, 수소 생산과 메탄 전환율을 향상시키기 위해 바이오가스 유량비, 수증기 유량비, 입력전력 변화와 같은 변수별 연구를 수행하였다. 바이오가스 유량비(biogas/TFR : total flow rate), 수증기 유량비($H_2O/TFR$: total flow rate), 입력전력이 각각 0.32~0.37, 0.36~0.42, 8 kW일 때 메탄의 전환율이 81.3~89.6%인 최적운전조건을 보였다. 이때 합성가스 중의 수소와 일산화탄소의 농도는 27.11~40.23%, 14.31~18.61%이며, 수소 수율은 40.6~61%, 에너지 전환율은 30.5~54.4%, $H_2/CO$ 비는 1.89~2.16이다.

  • An automobile clutch diaphragm spring is operating in a closed clutch housing under high temperature and subject to high stress concentration in driving condition, which frequently causes cracks and fracture. The material of spring is required to possess sufficient fatigue strength and tenacity, which depend largely on the condition of tempering heat treatment. In this paper, specimens are made under a number of different tempering temperatures md tested to find the optimal tempering heat treatment condition. The experiments include the verification of microscopic structure, hardness, tensile strength, fatigue crack growth rate, stress intensity factor range and residual stress. Also, decarbonization, which occurs in actual heat treatment process, is measured and allowable decarbonization depth is studied by durability test.

  • Since urban railway transit is one of the most essential transportation systems, its power facilities must ensure high reliability and safety. Currently, urban railway operating organizations perform TBM (Time Based Maintenance) on power facilities. However, in order to improve management efficiency and system safety, CBM (Condition Based Maintenance) is preferred. Among various power facilities, mold transformers has been chosen as the object of study since it is widely used for the purpose of minimizing volume and weight, and due to safety against fire. In this paper, various transformer failure cases due to electric, thermal, mechanical and environmental factors have been collected and analyzed. In addition, investigation on national and international condition based maintenance cases and the characteristics of sensors widely used for transformer monitoring has been performed to suggest the optimal condition based maintenance technique for urban railway systems.

Optimal Inner Case Design for Refrigerator by Utilizing Artificial Neural Networks and Genetic Algorithm

  • In this paper, an artificial neural network (ANN) was employed to build a predicting model for refrigerator structure. The predicting model includes three input variables of the plaque depth (D), width (W) and interval distance(S) on the inner wall. Finite element method was utilized to obtain the data, which would be necessary for the ANN training process. Finally, a genetic algorithm (GA) was applied to find the optimal parameters that leaded to the minimum inner case deformation under operating condition. The optimal combination found is the depth(D) of 2.63mm, the width(W) of 19.24mm and the interval distance(S) of 49.38mm which leaded to the smallest deformation of 1.88mm for the given refrigerator model.

  • The performance simulation of refrigeration system for the automotive vehicles was peformed, in which the refrigerant was HFC-l34a as an alternative to CFC-12. The coefficient of performance of the system for HFC-l34a was lower than that for CFC-12 operated in the same operating and design conditions. The optimal design conditions were obtained as a function of optimum capacity ratios of condenser and evaporator.

  • A hydraulic gun/turret servo system requires fast and robust controller performance because of severe operating condition and precise target tracking objective. Digital controllers are able to satisfy this requirement due to high speed electronic device. The purpose of this study is to compare with pre-EPU with new-designed optimal, adaptive controllers by simulating nonlinear hydraulic simulation program. The designed digital controller shows good tracking performance and robustness to disturbance.

  • The optimal braking control system is determined according to the required operating condition, for example brake rate. On that reason each train has its own various special features. This paper describes a study on the Brake Control System of Canada RAV Rapid Transit which also has various special features, to help comprehensive concept of brake control system including Cross Brake Control System and Guaranteed Emergency Brake Rate.

태양광 발전용 순시치 전류제어형 인버터의 특성 해석 (Analysist of Instantaneous Current Tracking Control Inverter Characteristics for Photovoltaic System)

  • In this paper, the photovoltaic inverter system with instantaneous sinusoidal current tracking control is proposed to improve the utilization factor of photovoltaic power system which would be connected utility interactive system. The proposed inverter is designed to track maximum power point by two-state value control method and utility interactive operation, and to decrease output harmonics component. Optimal operating region is described by state space averaging method, and present tracking condition of standard guide line. The experimental result shows the effectiveness of inverter system using the instantaneous control method.

초소형 전자칼럼의 대면적 주사 적정조건 (The Optimal Condition for Scanning Large Area with a Micro-electron-column)

  • In large area scanning with a micro-electron-column, the operating condition for the best resolution was investigated in factors of working distance and field of view. The resolution of a test sample was dependent on electron beam energy and scanning field size. The best resolution with single deflector was obtained at 300 V and 30 mm in the electron emitting tip voltage and a working distance, respectively. The scanning area at that condition was $13.9{\times}13.9mm^2$, linearly increased with the working distance. Double deflector was employed for larger scanning size without increasing working distance, but showed only 1.7 times larger than that of single deflector, and the resolution was inverse proportional to the scanning size.
