Long-Period Fiber Gratings Based on Periodically Surface-Etched Structure Imprinted by Using a Photoresist Polymer (폴리머 장주기 패턴을 이용한 표면 식각된 격자 구조 기반의 장주기 광섬유 격자)

  • A new fabrication technique of long-period fiber gratings with periodically surface-etched structures is proposed. Transmission characteristics of the periodically surface-etched long-period fiber gratings are improved by changing strain because of variation of coupling strength between the core and the cladding modes. The sensitivities of the periodically surface-etched long-period fiber gratings to strain, torsion, and ambient refractive index were measured. The strain and the torsion sensitivities were measured to be $-0.033\;dB/\mu\varepsilon$ and -1.30 nm m/rad, respectively. The ambient index sensitivity was measured to be -31.33 nm/RIU from a range from 1.33 to 1.42.

Optics of the light-weight and foldable telescope based on the Fresnel lens

  • We analyze an optical system of a telescope based on Fresnel type objective lens as suggested by Hyde (1999). The Fresnel objective lens can be thin, light-weight and foldable, and therefore it is possible to develop a space telescope with an aperture larger than that of traditional telescopes. Moreover a lens, whatever it is either Fresnel type or conventional, allows much larger fabrication tolerances. We design a medium-sized telescope adopting Fresnel lens as an objective lens for use in space and possibly on the ground. The well-known chromatic aberration of the Fresnel primary lens is corrected by a field lens and another Fresnel lens using Schupmann method. An additional lens is used for forming images. We analyze the chromatic and off-axis aberrations of the proposed system analytically and suggest methods for the minimization of off-axis aberrations and for the operation in wider spectral range. We also conduct ray tracing and optimize the whole optical system with commercial software. Finally we present the design parameters of a telescope with an aperture of 0.5 to 1 meters, enabling diffraction limited operation for a moderate field of view about 10 arc-minutes.

  • Nickel-phosphorus alloys are attractive materials for diamond turning applications such as fabrication of large optics and other high precision parts. It is also well-known that the higher phosphorus content of the alloys minimizes the diamond tool wear. Due to the weakness of electoless nickel plating that the phosphorus contents is limited to 13-14% (wgt), increased attention has been paid at electro-nickel plating which enables the alloys with 15-16% phosphorus. In this study, experiments were carried out to observe the wear characteristic of single crystal diamond tools in micro-grooving of electro-nickel plated drums. The experiments shows that long distance (50km) machining of micro-grooving on electro-nickel plated drum is possible with a single crystal diamond tool without any significant tool wear and defective machined surface.

  • A new method to design a see-through off-axis head-mounted-display (OA-HMD) optical system with an ellipsoidal surface is proposed, in which a tilted ellipsoidal surface is used as the combiner, which yields the benefits of easier fabrication and testing compared to a freeform surface. Moreover, we realize a coaxial structure in the relay lens group, which is simple and has looser tolerance requirements, thus making assembly easier. The OA-HMD optical system we realize has a simple structure and consists of a combiner and 7 pieces of coaxial relay lenses. It has a $48^{\circ}{\times}36^{\circ}$ field of view (FOV) and 12-mm exit pupil diameter.

  • Higly pure silicon crystals with an almost perfect lattice structure constityte a powerful metrological tool. The streographic standard prohection for the (111) orientation of diamond structure found by the Laue method shows angles between net planes of 60°. This value is known to be certain to some 10-8 rad. We have made a six-faced silicon polygon, and the (220) lattice planes of the polygon act as a reference angular standard. The information of angles between lattice planes could be taken by the X-ray diffraction. The angle of the rotary encoder have been calibrated using the silicon angle standard. The X-ray optics was double crystal arrangement.

  • We fabricated pyrromethene 597(PM597) solid-state dyes which were dissolved in PMMA(poly- methylmethacrylate) and characterized the lasing characteristics. The laser was end-pumped by a frequency doubled Q-switched Nd : YAG laser. We obtained the slope efficiency of $76\%$ at lasing wavelength of 585 nm. We demonstrated the laser lifetime to be more than 100,000 shots with output energy of 250 mJ and repetition rate of 4 Hz by adding singlet oxygen quencher DABCO(1,4-diazabicyclo [2,2,2]octane) to the solid-state dye.

  • We report theoretical and experimental investigation of a polarizer made of single mode side-polished fiber covered with a metal film. The influence of the metal film thickness and the refractive index of overlay on the device performance has been analyzed in terms of the normal mode theory. Based on the theoretical prediction, a polarizer with 40 ㏈ of polarization extinction ratio and 0.5 ㏈ insertion loss at optical communication wavelength has been realized.

  • We demonstrate a compact optical coherence tomography(OCT) system based on the optical fiber delay line controlled by a cylindrical piezo-electric transducer(PZT). An 18-m length of single mode fiber is wrapped under constant tension around a PZT. Approximately 134 windings are used. Wraps of the long length of fiber allow the small expansion of the PZT to be magnified to an optical path length delay of 0.78 m. The OCT system shows characteristics for 2-dimensional imaging, exhibiting 96.9dB of signal-to-noise ratio(SNR), $18.6{\pm}0.5\;{\mu}m$ of axial resolution, and $5\;{\mu}m$ of lateral resolution with samples.

  • In this paper, we study the photorefractive properties of Fe indiffused $LiNbO_3$ waveguides. Comparing the photorefractive properties of $Fe:LiNbO_3$ with those of $LiNbO_3$, we confirm the increase of the diffraction efficiency and the sensitivity by Fe doping. Also for the photorefractive properties of $Fe:LiNbO_3$ waveguides with different ambient gases, the diffaction efficiency and the sensitivity of $Fe:LiNbO_3$ indifused in pure argon gases are the highest and its decay time is the shortest. Therefore, it is recommended that pure argon gases be used in Fe indiffusion process for good optical switches with photorefractive effect.

Fabrication and Output Characteristics of Compact Capacitor Transfer XeCl Laser (용량이행영 소형 XeCl레이저 제작 및 출력특성)

  • Small XeCl laser of charge transfer discharge excitation was fabricated and output charateristics were investigated according to gas mixture ratio. Beam cross section of 2.7cm${\times}$1.5cm was obtained by constructing excimer laser which preionization is operated automatically and which has chang profile electrode. According to the component gas mixture ratio, the condition of maximum output energy, efficiency were investigated. The maximum energy, efficiency and specific energy were obtained 230 mJ, 1.6% and 1.1 J/l, respectively. The long pulse effect is observed by constructing low peaking to main capacitance ratio of 1:3.
