An imaging technique to visualize the internal defects in a plate-type nuclear fuel specimen was developed by using an active optical interferometer for a nondestructive quality inspection. A periodic thermal wave having a sinusoidal intensity pattern induced a periodical strain variation for the specimen. The varying strain image was acquired using an optical laser interferometer. The strain distribution over the internal defects will be distorted in an acquired strain image because a part of the thermal wave will be reflected from these defects during propagation. In this paper, internal defects were efficiently visualized by sequentially accumulating the extracted defect components. The experimental results confirmed that the developed visualization system can be a valuable tool to detect the internal defects in plate-type nuclear fuel.

There are technological changes to reduce the size and weight of electronic components and to accommodate multi-functions in them. To meet this trend, more complicated technological processes are required. To maintain the processes, more accurate inspection systems are also necessary. Therefore, new inspection methods are needed, which is differ from conventional inspection methods such as electrical test methods ICT(In-Circuit Test), FCT(Function Test) and visual test using optical equipments. One of the possible approaches is non-destructive test using X-ray. In this paper, an inspection method using X-ray is developed and applied to inspection of soldering state and internal defects of electronic components.

This paper describes an automatic measurement method for the in-line inspection of assembly tolerances of cathod ray electron guns. The method uses an optical microscope with a CCD camera as a probe. An automatic gap recognition algorthm with digital image processing and a new software autofocus algorithm based on using an optimal edge detector have been developed to improve the measuring accuracy. An inspection system has been proposed and practically implemented for in-line inspection to a real factory automation line. The inspection system consists of a gap inspection part and an eyelet. Total time consumed for inspecting all measuring items is about 10 seconds and the repeatability is below .+-. 5 .mu. m
We propose a path planning method to reduce the inspection time of AOI (automatic optical inspection) machines in SMT (surface mount technology) in-line system. Inspection windows of board should be clustered to consider the FOV (field-of-view) of camera. The number of clusters is desirable to be minimized in order to reduce the overall inspection time. We newly propose a genetic algorithm to minimize the number of clusters for a given board. Comparative simulation results are presented to verify the usefulness of proposed algorithm.

Detection of cracks in concrete beams using optical fiber sensors is useful for monitoring of concrete structures. In this study, optical time domain reflectometry (OTDR) is used to detect cracks. Resolution of OTDR is the main contributor to detect cracks in concrete structures. The OTDR used in this study can detect cracks with high precision of 0.5 m. Two mortar beams, reinforced with a 19 mm diameter steel bar, are made with the dimensions of 140 mm (width) ${\times}$ 200 mm (depth) ${\times}$ 2.000 mm (length). Two fibers are embedded inside each beam and two fibers are attached under the beams. The application of measurement system which consists of fiber and FC/PC connecter is studied. For this, theory of optics, resolution, crack moment, and size of specimens are investigated. From the measured data, it is verified that fibers which are attached under the beam can detect the crack in beams effectively. However, fibers embedded inside the beam are unable to detect cracks in beams using the OTDR in this study.

In the manufacturing process of the LQFP/TQFP (Low-profile Quad Flat Package/Thin Quad Flat Package), the requirement of a 3 dimensional inspection is increasing rapidly and a 3D inspection of the shape of a chip has become an important report of quality control. This study developed a 3 dimensional measurement system based on PMP (Phase Measuring Profilometry) for an inspection of the LQFP/TQFP chip and image processing algorithms. The defects of the LQFP/TQFP chip were classified according to the dimensions. The 2 dimensional optical system was designed by the dorm illumination to achieve constant light distribution, In the 3 dimensional optical system, PZT was used for moving 90 degree in phase. The problem of 2 ambiguity was solved from the measured moir? pattern using the ambiguity elimination algorithm that finds the point of ambiguity and refines the phase value. The proposed 3D measurement system was evaluated experimentally.

Recently, in order to reduce the time required to replace an optical jumper cord, many researchers are using a field-installable connector and applying the ferrule polishing method, ferrule mechanical contact method, or ferrule fusion contact method. However, the process of arranging the length of the optical fiber, i.e., inserting the optical fiber into the ferrule by hand and checking its cross section, takes 60% of the time required for the entire process, which increases the overall cost. Therefore, in order to make this task more cost-effective, we will develop an automated inspection system with automatic cross-sectional arrangement of a field-installable connector. This system will be able to decrease the failure rate from 10% to 2% compared with the conventional method when cutting the optical fiber inserted into the ferrule. It will also improve the productivity by decreasing the test time by 28% compared with the conventional method. Our studies showed that it was possible to reduce the production costs and improve the quality of a field-installable connector, and we expect it to dominate the market.

In this study, an inspection method using a color image is proposed to conduct a real-time inspection of covalent organic framework (COF) films to detect defects, if any. The COF film consists of an upper pattern SR and a lower PI. The proposed system detects the defects of more than 20 ㎛ on the SR surface owing to the characteristics of the pattern, whereas on the PI surface, it detects defects of more than 4 ㎛ by utilizing a micro-optical system. In the existing system, it is difficult for the operator to conduct a full inspection through a high-performance microscope. The proposed inspection algorithm performs the inspection by separating each color component using the color contrast of the pattern on the SR side, and on the PI surface it inspects the bonding state of the mounted chip. As a result, it is possible to confirm the exact location of the defects through the SR and PI surface inspections in the implemented inspection.
The paper reviews an improved continuous-wave (CW) terahertz (THz) imaging system developed for nondestructive inspection, such as CW-THz quasi-time-domain spectroscopy (QTDS) and interferometry. First, a comparison between CW and pulsed THz imaging systems is reported. The CW-THz imaging system is a simple, fast, compact, and relatively low-cost system. However, it only provides intensity data, without depth and frequency- or time-domain information. The pulsed THz imaging system yields a broader range of information, but it is expensive because of the femtosecond laser. Recently, to overcome the drawbacks of CW-THz imaging systems, many studies have been conducted, including a study on the QTDS system. In this system, an optical delay line is added to the optical arm leading to the detector. Another system studied is a CW-THz interferometric imaging system, which combines the CW-THz imaging system and far-infrared interferometer system. These systems commonly obtain depth information despite the CW-THz system. Reportedly, these systems can be successfully applied to fields where pulsed THz is used. Lastly, the applicability of these systems for nondestructive inspection was confirmed.

A multispectral imaging system with selected wavelength optical filter was demonstrated feasible for food safety inspection. Intensified multispectral images of carcasses were obtained with visible/near-infrared optical filters(542-847 nm wavelengths) and analyzed. The analysis of textural features based on co-occurrence matrices was conducted to determine the feasibility of a multispectral image analyses for discriminating unwholesome poultry carcasses from wholesome carcasses. The mean angular second moment of the wholesome carcasses scanned at 542 nm wavelength was lower than that of septicemic (P$\leq$0.0005) and cadaver(P$\leq$0.0005) carcasses. On the other hand, for the carcasses scanned at 700nm wavelength , the feature values of septicemic and cadaver carcasses were significantly (P$\leq$0.0005) different from wholesome carcasses. The discriminant functions for classifying poultry carcasses into three classes (wholesome, septicemic , cadaver) were developed using linear and quadr tic covariance matrix analysis method. The accuracy of the quadratic discriminant models, expressed in rates of correct classification, were over 90% for the classification of wholesome, septicemic, and cadaver carcasses when textural features from the spectral images scanned at the wavelength of 542 and 700nm were utilized.
