  • Dense Wavelength division multiplexing(DWDM) lightwave system requires multiplexer, demultiplexer and optical filter. In this paper, thus, we propose the Add-Drop Mux/Demux based on a Mach-Zehnder interferometer(MZI) with fiber Bragg grating(FBG). The Add-Drop Mux/Demux using FBG and MZI is able to minimize system and reduce weight. We also analyze output characteristics of Add-Drop Mux/Demux and present the optimum design data through the computer simulation.

  • We present the analysis of phase-shifted fiber Bragg gratings by coupled-mode equations. The transmission is expressed as that of a Fabry-Perot resonator with complex reflectance and complex transmittance. The transmission spectrum, the effective cavity length, and the behaviors with different phase-shifts are investigated. A very flattered transmission peak is obtained by introducing three phase-shifts in a grating.

  • A mechanically induced long-period fiber grating array was fabricated and its transmission characteristics were measured. The grating away consisted of a rubber cover and a 45 cm metal bar with 10 grating groups. Each grating group was composed of 60 gratings. The period of the grating of the grating groups was increased by $10{\mu}m$ increments from $690{\mu}m$ to $780{\mu}m$. The long period fiber grating was induced when the pressure was applied on the long period grating array and the resonant wavelength depended on the position of applied pressure. The experimental results shows that this long period fiber grating away can be used as a various band rejection filter or a fiber optic sensor.

  • A photonic RF true-time delay using a tapered chirped fiber Bragg grating coated with a heating electrode has been proposed and fabricated. For an RF signal carried over an optical signal, the time delay has been achieved by controlling the voltage applied to the electrode and thus adjusting its reflection positions from the fiber grating through the thermooptic effect. It features continuous voltage-controlled operation, requiring no mechanical perturbation and no moving parts. The measured time delay was about 120 ps with the electrical power consumption of $250{\cal}mW$.

  • Very narrow transmission peaks are generated by the phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating with phase-shift region. The width of the transmission peaks are about ~0.5nm. The characteristics of multi-wavelength source using the phase-shifted fiber Bragg grating are designed and analyzed. The source with two and three transmission peaks is analyzed (omitted)

  • The performance of a fiber Bragg grating strain sensor constructed with 3$\times$3 coupler is investigated. A 3$\times$3 coupler Mach-Zehnder (M/Z) interferometer is used as wavelength discriminator, interrogating strain-induced Bragg wavelength shifts. Two quadrature-phase-shifted intensities are synthesized from the as-coupled interferometer outputs, and digital arctangent demodulation and phase unwrapping algorithm are applied to extract the phase information proportional to strain. Due to the linear relation between the input strain and the output of quadrature signal processing, signal-fading problems eliminated. In the experiment, a fiber grating that was surface adhered on an aluminum beam was strained in different ways, and the photodetector signals were transferred and processed in a computer-controlled processing unit. A phase recovery fo 7.8$\pi$ pk-pk excursion, which corresponds to ~650$\mu$strain pk-pk of applied strain, was demonstrated. The sensor system was stable over the environmental intensi쇼 perturbations because of the self-referencing effect in the demodulation process.

  • We investigate the efficiency of an optical intensity modulator based on an electrically tunable $LiNbO_3$ reflection grating. Assuming a grating coupling coefficient and the waveguide propagation loss, waveguide length is varied to find its effect on the modulator slope efficiency and the device capacitance. With the low propagation loss of the $LiNbO_3$ waveguide, a very efficient optical intensity modulator can be achieved for a low frequency (${\sim}1GHz$) as long as the requirement for the grating coupling coefficient is satisfied.

  • In this paper, we propose and demonstrate a novel channel-selectable multichannel optical add/drop multiplexer consisting of a sampled fiber grating and tunable fiber Bra99 gratings. The device adds and drops not only single channel, but also any predetermined multiple channels simultaneously with low interchannel crosstalk by wavelength tuning as small as 0.5 nm or less. The interchannel crosstalk better than 27㏈ has been shown experimentally.

  • In this paper, we study an optical add-drop multiplexer which consists of the fiber Bragg grating filter and investigate the temperature characteristics of it. To resolve the characteristics, we find and analyze numerically its temperature response, and fabricate an optical add/drop multiplexer and measure its output spectrum. From the obtained results, they show that the center wavelength of output spectrum shifts approximately 0.01230 nm/$^{\circ}C$ within a temperature range $-30{\sim}90^{\circ}C$.

  • We demonstrate a k-domain linearization using a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array for Fourier domain optical coherence tomography based on a wavelength swept laser. The k-domain linearization is carried out with an interpolation method using a FBG array with five FBGs. The measured signal-to-noise ratio from the point spread function after k-domain linearization is 12 dB improved over that of without k-domain linearization at the 1 mm depth of the sample. Clear OCT imaging of the slide glass with k-domain linearization could be obtained.
