  • Open interfaces in the optica] Internet have been progressed by OIF's ISI, ITU-T ASTN's CCI and IETF's GSMP extensions with optical switching. These open interfaces enable the separation between the control plane and the optical transport plane. This separation allows flexibility in the network, but it suffers more setup delay than the traditional switch-by-switch connection setup. We propose the parallel interworking model, which will reduce the connection setup delay in the open interface of optical Internet. Based on the switch controller's caching capability about networks states, the parallel interworking procedures between signaling protocol and GSMP protocol are performed in the switch controller. We simulated and evaluated our proposed parallel interworking model and the existing sequential interworking model in terms of a connection setup delay and a completion ratio. We observed that the completion ratios of the two interworking models were quite close. However the connection setup delay of parallel interworking model is improved by about 30% compared with that of the sequential interworking model.

  • In this work, we have studied about an RSFQ (Rapid Single Flux Quantum) switch element. The circuit was designed, simulated, and laid out for mask fabrication. The switch cell was composed of a D flip-flop, a splitter, a confluence buffer, and a switch core. The switch core determined if the input data could pass to the output. “On” and o“off” controls in the switch core could be possible by utilizing an RS flip-flop. When a control pulse was input to the “on” port, the RS flip-flop was in the set state and passed the input pulses to the output port. When a pulse was input to the “off” port, the RS flip-flop was in the reset state and prevented the input pulses from transferring to the output port. We simulated and optimized the switch element circuit by using Xic, WRspice, and Julia. The minimum circuit margins in simulations were more than $\pm$20%. We also performed the mask layout of the circuit by using Xic and Lmeter.

  • By combining the multi-faceted environmental responsiveness of polymer hydrogels with photonically active structures, there has been a significant effort to create color-tunable photonic crystal sensors by changing either the periodic spacing of the structure or the dielectric constants of the materials. Here, we show that reversible spiral and helical opal switches with both dimensional and optical functionalities that respond to environmental chemistry can be constructed. When the transparent opal switch is swollen in hydrophilic acetic acid, right-handed spirals and helices that exhibit angularly dependent colors from Bragg diffraction are formed. When the transparent opal switch is swollen in hydrophobic hexane, left-handed spirals which exhibit angularly dependent colors from Bragg diffraction are formed. When the transparent opal switch is swollen in hydrophobic hexane solvent, a left-handed spiral and helix with an angularly independent bluish color is formed. After deswelling, all switches returned back to the transparent planar state. These color-tunable, reversible spiral and helical opal switches can be useful as mechanical actuators, and electrical devices as well as optical components.

  • Cu compensated Si doped GaAs (GaAs :Si:Cu has been chosen as the switch material. The GaAs material has been characterized by DLTS(Deep Level Transient Spectroscopy) technique and the obtained data were used in the computer simulation. Simulation studies are performed on several GaAs switch systems, composed of different densities of Cu, to investigate the influence of deep traps in the switch systems. The computed results demonstrates important aspect of the switch, the existence of two stable states and fast optical quenching. An important parameter optimum Cu density for the switch are also determined.

  • As one of the core technologies in the field of the optical communication with WDM, the optical cross connector with movements of micro mirrors is getting important day by day. The packaging structure of 2-dimensional NxN MOEMS switch should be determined by the harmonization of the following items such as the geometrical compatability between optical and structural components, the characteristics of optical input and output parts with device, and the electrical performance for the operation of micro mirrors. Therefore, the packaging process could be defined as the integrated technology completed by the optical and electrical science and the material science for the understanding of its thermo-mechanical properties with packaging materials. In the present study, the harmonization between the optical and structural components as well as the optical characteristics of lens system used will be investigated.

  • A 640Gb/s high-speed ATM switching system that is based on the technologies of advanced MCM, 0.25um CMOS and optical WDM interconnection is fabricated for future N-ISDN services. A 40 layer, 160mm$\times$114mm ceramic MCM realizes the basic ATM switch module with 80Gbps throughput. The basic unit ATM switch module with 80Gb/s throughput. The basic unit ATM switch MCM consists of in 8 chip advanced 0.25um CMOS VLSI and 32 chip I/O Bipolar VLSIs. The MCM employs an 40 layer, very thin layer ceramic MCM and a uniquely structured closed loop type liquid colling system is adopted to cope with the MCM's high-power dissipation of 230w. The MCM is Mounted on a 32cm$\times$50cm mother board. A three stage ATM switch is realized by optical WDM interconnection between the high-performance MCM.
